Rush Limbaugh rushes to John McCain's defense

With friends like Rush Limbaugh, John McCain doesn't need any enemies.

The conservative talk show hosts today denounced the New York Times' report on McCain's questionable relationship with lobbyist Vicki Iseman. During his 2000 presidential run, aides were so worried that there was a romance going on that they limited Iseman's contact with the Arizona senator, according to The Times account, which was backed up by the Washington Post. McCain and Iseman both flatly denied they had a romantic relationship.

Conservatives, who until now have loathed McCain, are rushing to his defense in the wake of the allegations raised by The Times, to them the symbol of all that is bad and liberal in the mainstream media.

In his show today, Limbaugh denounced the story as "Page Six-type gossip." Much as it pains this member of the liberal media who has done freelance writing for the Times to admit, Limbaugh raised an interesting point: "The story is not the story. The story is that this paper endorsed McCain, sat on this story and now puts it out just prior to McCain wrapping up the nomination."

One has to wonder why the Times editorial staff would endorse a candidate whose judgment was being questioned by its top political reporters. I realize that there is a Chinese wall separating news and editorial departments at newspapers, but there were rumors about this investigation among the Washington media elite since at least December.

Times editor Bill Keller denied anything was unusual about the timing of the story.
"In all the uproar, no one has challenged what we actually reported," he said in a statement. "On the timing, our policy is, we publish stories when they are ready."

Endorsement or no endorsement, the story that aides to the potential next president thought they needed to protect their boss from himself is one that needed to be told.
