In case you missed it, Congressmen Henry Waxman of California and Tom Davis of Virginia, the Democratic and Republican leaders on the House Oversight Committee, have sent a letter to the Justice Department asking them to investigate whether Roger Clemens "committed perjury and made knowingly false statements" when he told the committee that he had never used steroids or human growth hormone. The letter also said that "We are not in a position to reach a definitive judgment as to whether Mr. Clemens lied to the Committee. Our only conclusion is that significant questions have been raised about Mr. Clemens's truthfulness and that further investigation by the Department of Justice is warranted."
Newsday reports that the Justice Department "may already have decided to begin its own investigation prior to this recommendation, considering its continued involvement with this case."
Well that's just dandy. The Justice Department couldn't even wait for a letter from Congress before it starting looking into whether Roger Clemens didn't or didn't inject a substance into his buttocks. Taxpayer dollars at work!
I understand the significance for baseball/his legacy/etc. But that the idea that this case merits a federal investigation is over the top. Who cares whether Roger Clemens lied to Congress about steroid use?
Don't they have better things to investigate? Like the fact that we ended up sending young people over to Iraq based on testimony to Congress that turned out not to be true?
Leave Roger Clemens alone.

I was supportive at first of the government going after baseball players using steroids and HGH since the first hearing with McGuire, Conseco and etc. After the Palmeiro, Bond, and Clemens fiascoes, I changed my mind. Court of Public Opinion will take of itself with the players. Instead, I like to see Congress target both MLB and MLPA to implement their own rules. If they can't, then let the government do it for them. That kind of threat is needed.
