Former Olympic Rower Turned to Minimalism to Pay Down $82,000 in Debt
"SEXY." The capital letters blared at me from the window of Victoria's Secret in Pioneer Place here in Portland. Next to the clean lovely windows of the Apple store, I felt I almost had to shield my eyes, to protect me from the glare. The mannequin dressed in a red bustier seemed more Elvira than Rebecca Romijn, the sweet face of Victoria's Secret when I was a loyal customer in my early 20s.I'm not the only one turned off by the company's recent focus on sexy above all else. In rather shocking statements during this morning's Limited Brands Inc. (NYSE: LTD) analyst call, Victoria's Secret CEO Sharen Turney said the company has "gotten too much off our heritage" and was "too sexy," no longer the ideal "ultra-feminine."
With black lacquer and shocking pink decor, the "s" word thrown around like neon signs in a red-light district, and rather unsubtle displays, this isn't my mother's Victoria's Secret.

It's not even my Victoria's Secret -- I remember all my friends in high school would save their allowance to afford their girly satin floral underwear and romantic pajamas. Turney plans to change all that, emphasizing seductive over sexy, remodeling and enlarging stores, and "continuing to reinvent" the annual fashion show.
Will the return to girl-next-door and banishment of lady-of-the-night mean a change in Limited Brands' profitability? I think it has potential, although the cost might be more than I'm comfortable with. Standard & Poor's is threatening to reduce the company's debt ratings to "junk" status, and the stock has been on a steady downward trend. It closed today at $15.85, down $1.97, or 11.05%, within striking distance of its 52-week low of $14.82 on January 11.

I agree with the CEO totally. VS has gotten completely off course from their old adage of service, selection, and sizes you can't find elsewhere. I can't buy decent bras in a 34DD anywhere else, but VS used to carry them; now the only ones they have in my size are as ugly and unsupportive as Sears old-lady-bras-in-a-box. The prices are completely out of line with the quality. They should take a clue from their name: men DO want you to keep some secrets...even if the models don't.
Melissa: where have you been? VS already IS as trashy as Frederick's...but at least Frederick's is honest about the image and the clientele they cater to.
Poopsie: I have young daughters, and there are no safe channels, and no safe hours, for them to watch. I don't want them learning that the nearly naked women in these commercials represent what it means to be attractive or seductive when they are older.
Men: if your wife won't let you read Playboy or Penthouse, she isn't going to like you taking over her Victoria's Secret catalog either!!

Many young girls today would do well to watch the movie of, and take a lesson from, Gypsey Rose Lee. Subtle sexuality and feminine charm are much sexier and more appealing than the IN YOUR FACE sex that seems so common today. Unless of course you want men to think you're a whore...........then, go for it.

Shopping at Victoria's Secret used to be a fun and relaxing experience. It was nice to go there and get away from the crowded mall. Now it feels more trashy, less classy, and the salespeople are very pushy.

Sometime ago, I emailed our local CBS affiliate re: Victoria's Secret ads--even called them "soft porn". These ads were during daytime hours when small children might be watching. I got an email back that the local station was not "responsible" for the ads and also noted that other emails had expressed the same feelings.
Funny thing, I never saw those ads again!

I have always appreciated beautiful lingerie since my mother insisted at a young age that it was one of nicest "luxuries" women could have. Let me reiterate the word, "lingerie". VS does not have "lingerie". Where is the real silk, lace and quality well fitting product that goes into a high end "lingerie" store? If VS truly had "lingerie" you wouldn't see 16 yr old cuties shopping there or waiting on you nor would you find the store in the local mall.
