BP sets aside more funds for legal settlements

BP logoBP plc (NYSE: BP) stock is falling this morning after the company announced this morning it has raised its claim fund to $2.13 billion for the 2005 explosion at its Texas City refinery. Lower oil futures are also hurting the stock. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on BP.

After hitting a one-year high of $79.77 in November, the stock hit a one-year low of $57.85 in January. This morning, BP opened at $63.2. So far today the stock has hit a low of $63.15 and a high of $63.99. As of 12:40, BP is trading at $63.90, down $0.73 (-1.1%). The chart for BP looks bearish but slightly improving while S&P gives BP a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy rating.

For a bearish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a July bear-call credit spread above the $80 range. A bear-call credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of call options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 4.2% return in four and a half months as long as BP is below $80 at July expiration. BP would have to rise by more than 25% before we would start to lose money. Learn more about this type of trade here.

BP hasn't been above $80 at all in the past year and has shown resistance around $59 recently. This trade could be risky if oil prices continue to rise sharply in the coming months, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by resistance BP could find from its 200-day moving average, which is currently at $70.
