The story of the guy in Australia arrested for going on a six-day, 1,988-mile test drive of a new Honda Accord brought back many memories of my own car-buying experiences -- none of them pleasant.First was the salesman at a nameless Hyundai dealership who in the middle of a test drive asked my wife and I to stop at a convenience store so he could buy a pack of cigarettes. Thank goodness, he didn't smoke the Marlboros while we were driving the SUV he supposedly was trying to sell us, but this idiot soured my family on Hyundais forever. Heck, driving near the Korean-made cars makes me nervous.
During a test-drive of a Nissan, my wife and I heard a rattle. The smooth-talking salesman -- whose twin brother also sells cars -- told us not to worry because "we will get you one without the rattle." My wife and I weren't impressed and NIssan is now also on my family's do-not-drive list. Whenever I see a Nissan on the road, I try to change lanes.
Amazing, isn't it, how one obnoxious salesman can ruin a brand in a customer's mind forever. I am sure that tons of people love their Hyundais and Nissans. Hyundai, which offers what it calls "America's Best Warranty", has some pretty sweet deals on some of its cars in its "Dollars & Sense" promotion: $3,000 cash back on the 2008 Sonata and $2,000 back on the 2008 Santa Fe. Nissan has plenty of deals for its 50th anniversary sales event.
None of these deals would impress me if I was in the market for a car because I am a happy owner of a 2003 Honda Element. Whenever this car rusts into oblivion, I am going to buy another Honda and another one after that because the cars made by Honda Motor Corp. (NYSE: HMC) are that good. My wife is as loyal to Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F).
Even so, as an automotive novice, I have difficulty understanding how the Honda dealership in Australia was snookered.
First of all, the 30-year-old unnamed perpetrator wanted to test drive a Honda Accord. Anyone who even knows the tiniest bit about cars knows that the Accord is as reliable as a faithful dog. Consumer Reports named it as 2008's "Top Family Sedan." To be fair, the Hyundai Elantra SE was named "Top Small Sedan" and the Santa Fe was named "Best Midsized Sedan." No Nissans were given similar accolades. None of these vehicles, though, is in the same league as the Accord, which has been around since 1976.
The car should sell itself, which makes me wonder why the Australian dealership let some drive it without a sales representative present. Tracking it down through the desolate outback must have been tough given the huge terrain. The Northern Territory alone is twice the size of California. Then, of course, is the Accord itself which has been redesigned for 2008 and gets mileage of about 22 miles in the city and 31 on the highway. No wonder it was tough to find.

Oh my goodness, you English nuts get a grip. There are 2 sentences that say "my wife and I." One is correct, and the other should be "my wife and me."

While I was in collage I had a sales man call me a f*** punk after a test drive where the radio was broke ,the seatbelts did not work ,and the shifter popped off in my hand while shifting. I had to coast off the road to keep a large truck from running us over . The trucks screaching brakes and smoking tires did not bother him . That dealer could not give me a car now . I could well afford that car then . I buy very nice cars now. Money they will never touch.

If the author would buy an American made car, we wouldn't have had to read about the incompetence of the dealers sending our money over seas. Who care what kind of foreign junk he drives. Buy American!! And please remember not to put my American flag on your foreign cars.

If you are willing to discount an entire make of car because the salesperson left a bad taste in your mouth, it shows you are incapable of making objective decisions on the second largest purchase most people make.
Hondas, Nissans, and every other asian make of automobile was introduced to this country on the premise of gas mileage and honest transportation. Now these cars are crammed with every luxo-barge feature that one could rarely find on the most expensive makes 5 years ago. In this day and age, every car maker is competent enough to put out a great product considering the complexity of the average automobile. It comes down to brand image, and the prestige of ownership...also known as that quiver in your pants when you tell someone else what you drive.

I live in Gulfport MS and most dealerships send everyone out alone for test drives. One dealer told me it was because a salesman was car jacked. The cars are insured and its not worth the risk to the salesmen. Go figure!

If you cannot tell that this is a terrible advertisement for a boring Honda and a terrible writer who cannot seem to stay on subject...You deserve to read everything that AOL puts up to show you. "How to buy a car" and "What signs tell you that a salesman is lying". Please I work in the automotive industry and it is dog eat dog. The products are getting better and better. The margins on how much a salesman can make smaller and smaller. Know your subject! When auto industry suffers 4 out of 5 businesses suffer. They are all linked to the car business. Think about it...

To Kent Lindy....I owned a Honda Accord. It was a 1997 Accord SE. I bought it with 40,xxx miles and got rid of it with 140,xxx on it. It was a decent car in the fact that it ran, but being only 5'7 and 160 pounds I found it to be cramped and painful on trips over an hour, and underpowered with the 2.2 four banger. But it never left me stranded.
If you want to compare mileage my 1979 Buick Lesabre with a 301 V8 has over 340,xxx miles on it and still starts up right with the turn of the key. It has cost me about $600 in maintainence in the last 7 years (not counting oil changes). I drove it everyday, and it still gets 24 mpg on the highway. Yes, its still the original engine and tranny. Its all about maintainence and upkeep. Almost any solid car can last when the owner loves it enough to take great care of it.

You meatheads still haven't figured out why our economy, house prices, schools, cities and our infrastructer is becoming third world.
It's because our merchandisers ran overseas to buy stuff cheap and ran back here to sell to people who have good paying American jobs. Duh, I wonder what happened to the good paying American jobs and the once greatest country?

I love the inconsistencies on this board.
"All imports suck except my BMW...."
"Buy American. My Impala......" Your Impala is not made in the US.
"Honda's suck" Did they suck when GM dropped its own engine and bought a Honda V6 for its Saturn SUV? BTW, its domestic content went up with the addition of the Honda engine, which was built in the US. The previous GM engine had been an import.
GM has finally resolved the issue by moving the entire vehicle production (Vue) to Mexico.
