Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) indicated last week that it would begin selling milk under its own private label brand ("Great Value") that is not sourced from cows that have been treated with growth hormones. There are already several brands of milk that have this feature (generally, the "organic" brands), but this is the first time I've seen a Wal-Mart store brand make a major move like this.Growth hormones are administered to cows to increase their milk production, but critics argue that the injections lead to less healthy cows which are, in turn, more likely to be treated with antibiotics. It's been widely reported that most normal supermarket milk is sourced from cows that have been treated with artificial hormones, although without national testing and a complete statistical sampling, it's hard to tell which have been treated and which have not been.
Preventcancer.com even says that most European countries and Canada ban importation of U.S. milk for this very reason. So my question to Wal-Mart is this: is the new "Great Value" milk choice being offered nationally in all U.S. stores? If so, where is the list of your suppliers? It's hard to think that the world's largest retailer could instantly start offering hormone-free milk to its stores without turning the natural dairy industry on its head overnight. The retailer says it is bowing to consumer demand here, which is good. Still -- are there enough dairy suppliers that don't treat their herds with artificial hormones to cater to Wal-Mart's needs?

I live in the central valley of California, and most of the milk sold in stores here does not contain the growth hormones.

I think it's great that Walmart plans to sell the more purer milk, however, be aware that this trend tends to go overboard like in Germany.
One hears and sees "Bio.... bio"; naturally, those prices for those items are quite higher. Yet, when the bird flue was in Europe, the chickens were cooped up indoors just like the other chickens, but they still sold them and eggs as "bio". Also, there has been a bit of fraud detected in the bio-producers' industry. With the overboard is meant that there is hardly anything eatable anymore overthere is not "bio" for much higher prices. Maybe later almost all the others will disappear and one has no choice and pay even higher prices.

Ahhh Wendy, your eloquence is only surpassed by your intellect...
Here's just a small sampling of the information that can be found on this subject simply by using the magic of the internet: "The recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), a genetically engineered hormone manufactured by Monsanto, has sparked a controversy nationwide since its introduction to the marketplace a couple of years ago. Sometimes referred to as Bovine Somatotropin (rBST), the bioengineered hormone is injected in the cows every other week to force the cows to produce more milk than their bodies normally would. rBGH is similar, although not identical, to a hormone that the cow naturally produces. Increasing levels of this hormone boosts milk production, causing a number of problems with the milk, among them, raising levels of pus, antibiotics residues and a cancer-accelerating hormone called IGF-1."

What people in this country dont realize is that first of all the Growth hormone people are so afaid of is natural occuring hormone that cows already have and need produce milk. It does not harm them or their milk in any way. Second, the hormone was very expensive to use and quite a hassle so most dairymen just stopped using it. Third and most important, it is now outlawed! So would everyone please just get over it and quit picking on this nations hardest working people(and generally poorest) our dairymen and farmers. Without them all of your food would come from Mexico and overseas where God only knows what they use on their cows and crops!

Wal-Mart is not exactly known for telling the truth. (Remember when they were charged with selling conventional food as organic?) This is no different. They will sell random milk, some of which will come from cows that have been given the hormone, and will claim that this is not true. And yes, the hormone does harm cows and may be an additional health risk for people on a milk-heavy diet.

BST is a protein hormone, not a steroid hormone and does not bind in humans because we do not carry the receptors for this hormone. Also, milk is tested for antibiotics and any milk from cows receiving drugs is discarded and does not go into the food chain. No harmful effects have been documented in the cattle from the use of BST.

Nicely put, CupcakeMagee, and absolutely correct.
Honestly, I don't know why anyone still drinks milk. It's basically a money-making scam from the dairy industry. Several studies show that the phosphorus content in milk interferes with calcium absorption and may actually strip bones of calcium. If you want calcium, look to those leafy greens! We also have recent studies that link prostate cancer in men to low-fat milk.
Not to mention that no other mammal in nature drinks the milk of another mammal past infancy. It's unnatural. Throw in the inhumane treatment of dairy cows and you have yet another useless, unnecessary and possibly harmful product of the consumerism and sheep mentality that have become the trademarks of modern-day American society. Why think for yourself when someone else feeds you everything you want to hear!?

What you are forgetting is this is just another excuse for the middleman to inflate the price we pay for milk while the dairy farmer struggles to feed thier cows and family.Regardless of how you feel about the hormone it is just another way for the retailers to make more money.

Now I hope the next additive they tackle is sugar. Why on earth would someone go to the trouble of buying organic milk just to see on the label that it has the same 11 or 12 grams of sugar as do most commercial brands of milk? Why can't all the dairy companies simply eliminate the sugar???! It's maddening.

When the day comes that I have to go to WalMart to buy milk, I will stop drinking it.
Americans should boycott WalMart and all it stands for. By importing only goods made in China, they are surely the downfall of this country.

watch the undercover video and then see for yourself if the so called "stupid" hormone that doesn't hurt any body is indeed that. It has a disasterous effect on the cows not to mention how cruel it's use has become. This is not about putting the working class dairy farmers out of work. However, there are better alternatives out their. We could look at how the Japanese take care of thier cows as a role model for ethical treatment of cows that are used as a food source.

REPLY TO ELLEN:
Sugar is a natural ingredient in a lot of things, milk included. Sugar is NOT added at a dairy; comes from the cow itself.

We as human beings are the only mammal (other than domestic cats, because WE GIVE IT TO THEM) that continue to drink milk past our infancy. In addition, we are the only species that drinks another mammal's milk. If you have to have it, my advice is switch to soy milk, rice milk, or almond milk. I did, and lost weight immediately. Milk is just not good for you. I DOESN'T "do a body good". The American Dairy Association is a multi-billion dollar business...with thousands and thousands of lobbyists. They can afford to pay politicians off for their votes, as well as celebrities millions of dollars to sport a milk-mustache for their ad campaigns. Cow's milk, by design, is meant to turn a 70lb calf into a 2000lb cow, and guess what? It does. Look into it. Factory farming is disgusting, unnatural, and cruel. If you think your milk comes from a little old farmer in overalls and a straw hat tottering out to the barn to milk ol' Bessie with a wooden bucket sitting on a little stool, think again. If those things don't matter to you, throw a tape measure around your waist, give up milk for 3 months, then re-measure. You'll see what I mean. And no, I don't work for PETA. I just chose to educate myself on the subject many months ago. It also seems as though we have several "bio-physicists" on here who have conducted and/or participated in studies on the effects of the growth hormone in question....or maybe they just THINK they know everything. Man I love people like that.......

The fact is there is no way to prove there are no hormones added into any milk, as the very same hormone is naturally occuring in milk. SO the people who buy and sell defective product from China, we are going to trust them on this. The temptation by them and their suppliers to sell this type of milk, and make the extra money that goes along with it ought to be frightening to the very people for which this is important . It will be very easy to CLAIM it has no hormones added in production, but no way to prove or enforce it.
