Shoppers in a New York area Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) probably were not expecting to be inhaling pepper spray on their shopping visit, but that's just what happened this past weekend due to an errant decision by some employees at a Valley Stream location. Some employees just couldn't figure out what was in an "unmarked" canister, so they decided to spray some of the contents of the canister into the air -- I suppose to sniff the contents. Generally, determining what's in an unmarked canister using olfactory prowess is not a preferred detection method. Well, unless you're a trained canine or something.
What the employees didn't know is that pepper spray particles began floating all over the store, aided by cooling fans that were turned on in some aisles.
In total, 16 customers fell ill due to inhaling pepper spray and half that total actually required a trip to the hospital as a result of inhaling the pepper spray particles. Note to Wal-Mart management: any unmarked canisters should be disposed of properly, not tested in-house. It's hard to think any canister the size of a pepper spray container would be unmarked, but there you have it.

Sure, WAL MART is always comes with new ideas to attract customers. This is a good one since milk prices are high lately. What really keeps dissapointing me is the fact that the stores are not well kept.
Cleaningless is not their best standard. I don't know who is in charged of this area, or who is doing their cleaning but they really need some attention to detail.

I totally agree with Roman(1)
The local store managers and district managers are to blame for the dirty WMT stores. As you say that obviously is not a priority with them. They should be SHOT!

I'm beginning to think that the "dirty store" phenom (when not part union agitprop) may relate to lifestyle in some places. I shop Walmerica in Dillon/Frisco, Colorado and in the Denver stores and they are as clean as a hound's tooth. But hey, that's just me, "a typical white person" as BO says.

Well if people didn't make messes and walk away the stores would be cleaner. but as it is the maintenance people have little time to do general maintenance because they are called all over the store to clean up what the public drops and spills
