General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) will be building a new vehicle engine and parts plant in Brazil at a cost of $200 million, the automaker said this week. The new plant will bring about 500 new employees to the automaker at a time when it's winding down the closure of quite a few vehicle assembly plants all over the U.S.Six quarters from now, the new Brazilian plant shout be producing engines in the new facility, which is expected to make about 50,000 engines per year. In a unique twist, GM also indicated that engines from this new plant will be tested without using gasoline, eliminating contaminants inside the plant (as in emissions particulates).
Most likely, engines produced in this plant (which GM has been mum about) will be used in vehicles to feed the fast-growing Brazilian market and perhaps other South American markets as well. GM has seen a rapid increase in its Latin America sales as of late, with a 19.4% increase to 1,235,913 vehicles last year to countries in the region.

GM executives are learning how to declare bankruptcy in Portuguese, the native language of Brazil. If the GM cars slated to use these new engines are assembled by the UAW, they'll have the recall before the introduction.

When is it important enough to save our own country that we don't send all our money to other countries? Keep our jobs at home! Too many of our work force is out of work and families losing everything because it is more important to continue to feed the egos of the rich. CEO"s and corp. execs have no idea what it is like to have to send their babies to bed hungry or not be able to find a job when you are serious about finding one. The same goes for the power-hungry oil execs at Exxon, etal. When do they stop? We have all said "UNCLE" more than once. Why don't they sell a car that gets 80 mpg? The technology exists. If this goes through, don't expect this person to support GM products! My feet will do the talking. The reason people by foreign cars is because they're a better product....American made could be too. GM, stay home and make a more efficient product. Stop closing your factories and home and retool, do it right!!!!!!

THESE NEW ENGINES WON'T BE ASSEMBLED BY UAW WORKERS. THEY WILL BE MADE BY PEOPLE THAT WANT TO WORK AND MAKE A LIVING INSTEAD OF SITTING ON THEIR ASS AND COMPLAINING ALL THE TIME.

Geoff,, Don't know who named you, they must be as off as you are. Jeff, there have been many recalls that have come from "Jap" cars and they don't have a thing to do with the UAW. UAW works only build what the company designs and engineers for them to build. Get back on the turnip truck you haven't learned anything yet. I hope where you work it's defect free, cause I doubt it.

Joe, I hate to burst your bubble son but I worked for GM and now I am on disability with a back that allowed me to do much of nothing because of the jobs I did there. Can't enjoy my retirement because the GM job you said is so easy broke me down. So put a cork in it until you know what you are talking about.

the HIGHEST corporate tax rate in the WORLD; Union REQUIREMENTS; excessive government REGULATION; and you WONDER WHY jobs are LEAVING AMERICA? how DAMN STUPID is the left? if/when you want jobs to RETURN to the U.S. it's really VERY SIMPLE 1) reduce corporate tax rates from 35% to 10 - 15% 2) GET RID OF UNIONS 3) REDUCE GOVERNMENT REGULATION BY 1/2. our economy is SOCIALIST and the left says to recover we need to become MORESO! that is UTTERLY INSANE. elect a democrat and watch our once prosporous economy SINK LIKE THE TITANIC! it's THAT SIMPLE!

This is disgusting. Corporate America is selling this Country in front of our eyes and we are wathcing it happen. Then we wonder why we are in the mess we are in at present.
They say nobody is spending, that's why the economy is in the state it is. Well ,no wonder. If you don't have a job how can you purchase anything, it does not grow on trees.
Bush has created this crisis in this country by constantly feeding $$$$ to the wealthy and in turn have been constantly stealing it from the middle class, to there is nothing left to steal. That my friends is where we are at today.
It's where you wonder how can these so called "Patriots of the USA" can say built in America by Americans anymore and look you in the eye and mean it. In my mind if a company can be allowed to sub contract thier work out like this they should have to pay a heavy taxation penalty to do this.

It's bad enough when industries move out of U.S., but move to Mexico and help keep them working there instead of stealing our jobs illegally here.

corporations report to their stockholders - NO ONE ELSE. their objective is to MAXIMIZE PROFIT. everytime they get ANOTHER FEDERAL MANDATE that costs them money. impose enough mandates, make them pay higher corporate taxes than anywhere else in the world, allow unions to FORCE them into costly wage/hour agreements, FORCE them to implement useless "green" policies when the "debate" is NOT over and there comes a time when corporations move to another country. it's really very simple. the utter confusion comes in when our government legislators who are lawyers and understand NOTHING about business and/or ecomonics thinks the corporations OWE US SOMETHING ELSE and therefore try to overregulate the corporations. washington government, state governments and unions are KILLING THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGG. this is NOT a very complex issue to understand. and forget about "tax cuts for the rich" - EVERY significant middle class tax bracket is paying LESS in taxes, and has been since 2002, than under the wjc administration.

and i've recently seen reports saying that the new york stock exchanges are considering leaving America and moving to London due to excessive federal regulation (and associated costs of complying with these regulations). for example recently enacted financial reporting requirements intended to eliminate corporate fraud is VERY costly to implement and has NOT prevented fraud anymore than in the past. if our government is going to implement requirements AT LEAST make them EFFECTIVE so the mandates actually DO WHATEVER THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO!!!

More Japaneese cars are made in this country than most American cars now. The Japaneese have been building plants in this country and providing 'us' jobs. GM cars are awful anyways, so no one cares, but I do think it's sad they are leaving, cause so many will loose their jobs. It's all about their profit, not their employees lives!
