After losing about 40% of its value last week, Crocs (NASDAQ: CROX) has another headache. The Wall Street Journal reports (subscription required) that "Japan has asked the maker of Crocs to look into changing the design of its footwear after complaints that children wearing the colorful plastic clogs have had their feet injured on escalators."
The company has faced similar accusations in the United States and Crocs is reportedly working with the Elevator/Escalator Safety Foundation (I can't believe that even exists) on public education initiatives.
What does all this mean for Crocs? Probably not much beyond the company's already dismal financial results, although the posters warning about the dangers of Crocs near escalators in Japan probably won't do much to spur sales.
Crocs' dramatic fall from grace has been an interesting story to watch, and the company just doesn't seem to be able to catch a break.
The safety concerns are not disclosed as risk factors in Crocs' latest 10-K, indicating that the company's management may not see them as a material threat to sales.

Okay, so yeah, I clicked on the link to read this article... but what a waste of time! "What does all this mean for Crocs? Probably not much...." That's ridiculous. If it means "probably not much," why write an article about it? I'm in a bad habit of wasting so much time clicking on stupid links like this one!

A little more supervision would help prevent many of the accidents kids have.

I once fell down an escalator because I was wearing Platform shoes in the 1970s. Big deal. I was 16 years old and stupid. It wasn't the fault of the shoe manufacturer. Maybe Japan is just pissed because Crocs holds an international patent and if anyone tries to manufacture a knock-off, they will get their arses sued. Care to guess how many flip-flop manufacturers there are in Japan? My guess is that Crocs could have given them some mean competition.

I've been a klutz since I was little. I always trip over my own two feet in any shoes...does that mean they should be taken away? No...kids fall. It's a fact of life. When crocs first came out, plenty of the elementary kids at my K-12 school wore them and never had more accidents than if they wore regular shoes. I tripped on an escalator in cheap flip flops and sprained my ankle and scratched up my foot...who should I sue? I was hurrying through the house in socks the other day, slipped on the hardwood floor, and fell flat on my back...do I have a case. Yes I'm being sarcastic about the suing, but don't take something off the market because some people can't use it.

Any shoes can be a hazard on escalators, especially when kids are involved. My brother once got the shoelaces to one of his sneakers stuck at the top of an escalators. Its all about paying attention to what you're doing, and also knowing where the emergency stop button is. As for the crocks...I own several pairs, and love them! They're great for being on my feet all day at work, and they're easy to clean. They've been endorsed by the ADA too...can't argue with that.

Crocs are a just plain ugly fad and that's why the company is now going downhill. To all the people who are stating flip-flops are more dangerous than Crocs, where are all the lawsuits regarding escalator injuries while wearing flip-flops? You can bet there'd be plenty if that was the case. Yes, parents do have to watch their kids on the escalator, but obviously there's a design flaw in these shoes that cause more escalator injutries than other footwear.

My son has tripped several times wearing crocs, and never with his regular shoes. Twice he busted his face up and now has scars on his upper lip. He is no longer allowed to wear crocs. They are very dangerous, especially to children who are continuing to grow and develop. They offer poor support for the physically developing foot.

Most people bemoaning crocs(the most comfortable shoe on the planet),are walking around in 2 to 4 inch HEELS!!!!!!!!!
As a 50-something with bad feet and ankles (football and basketball) I can tell you that this argument would have been laughed off whatever forum it was
debated on not 20 years ago.
There are way too many lawyers in this world!!!!!!!!

I wear Crocs, my kids wear them, we buy several pair each year because we CAN! If you don't like them don't wear them. It's clumsy people who get injured not the footwear. Why isn't anyone talking about those hideous Heelies shoes kids are wearing with wheels on them? They are causing more head injuries and falls than Crocs ever did? But nobody is reporting those facts because of product bias. It's good to kick Crocs because they are successful, but go after the real danger, Heelies shoes....schools are banning them, not Crocs!!! I need to buy more Crocs just to piss off the Croc haters :)

There is a big difference in a shoe for adults and one for children. I know that Crocs is an excellent shoe for some types of occupations. I think that while playing, kids should wear tennis shoes with velcro fasteners or stay put laces... But, they don't all the time. Crocs might seem dangerous for kids, however, I have to agree with what others have said... Flip flops are by far more dangerous.
If this ever came down to the end of production for this shoe, I think in all fairness, it should still be available for adults that use it for health problems or work.
Some shoes just aren't appropiate for children. DON'T EVEN get me started on Wheelies (or whatever the heck they're called). Shwew, sorry for the rambling. Haha.

My oldest daughter had one foot problem after another since she is
on her feet sometimes up to 16 hours a day. One of her co-workers
suggested she try Crocs and now she lives in them. No more pain or
problems. They must have some benefit because my daughter is very
picky about everything. If she says they are the best, most
comfortable shoes when you're on your feet for long stretches of
time, then I sure believe her. There is also a major difference
between the true Crocs and the knock offs. The brand is a MUST! I
have back problems and wore a pair of her Crocs a while and for the
first time in forever I had NO pain for an entire day. I wouldn't
reccomend them for children. For people on their feet all the time or
someone like me only semi-active who needs the correct support to ease
back pain, they're great. She already has several pair (including the
NE Patriots ones! Lol) and I've ordered my first pair. The choices in
color are wonderful. In this "sue happy" country, people need to use
common sense, but also, probably moreso these days, parents have to
wake up and BE parents!! I know too many parents who HAVE to have
children then both work 80 hours a week to have all of the latest new
"toys" and can't be bothered with the child(ren) they HAD to have.
They can't blame the manufacterer (sp?) of the items that their
chidren get hurt wearing or hurt on when they aren't using their
heads and having common sense. Because a child says "I want", that's
no reason to appease their every whim and that especially here is as
far as Crocs. They just aren't "kid safe". I have 8 children who have
never had more than plain ol' sneakers and good fitting shoes and only
lately have had a teenager complain but their safety is more important
to me as a parent than to fulfill every "I want" she has. Most parents
today do not PARENT and sue over what they as parents should be aware
of as not safe to begin with. Stop blaming the Crocs. Parents, get
over having every "toy" in the universe and BE a parent to your
child. You can tell how bad it is just by listening to people carry
on about 'stay at home moms'. Moms belong at home if at all possible
but too many work for "toys" instead and hand their kid everything
under the sun - except their love and attention. The child is out
with them one of the 2 or 3 days a month they take the child out and
he/she is injured. Next thing you know, another lawsuit becuase they
live at work and have no common sense. Crocs should not go down
paying for NON parents' mistakes. (Sorry I got long winded - "no
common sense because they're absent parents" are a real pet peeve
with me!..This does NOT include moms who MUST work/single moms..this is the ones who work solely for the toys that are so maddening! I know, I watch their kids.) Please excuse spelling errors I'm in a hurry..thanks!

I think people need to re-evaluate their opinions about crocs. At first I thought they were ugly but I must say that they are really comfortable and supportive of the feet. As for being dangerous, any shoe can be since if one looks back in history, it is often the escalators that are the issue. Also, as for the rubber cmponent, remember even sneakers have rubber soles, does this mean they too are dangerous,

I for one think Crocs are awesome.I wear mine to take out the trash, get the mail, pick the kids up from school,to the pool etc.My kids wear them to the pool and to play. They are perfect for their adventures in the creek etc. We have had NO problems with them. They are just like flip flops but more comfortable. I see no problem with them at all.As for the escalators-use common sense folks-any shoe can get caught,be a parent supervise your children and teach them to stand on the step-not ride on the edge-and not slide off the end-again common sense.

Me again,I forgot to say that my mother, who has bad health, rhuematoid arthitus and numerous othe rhealth problems had to be talked into trying mine on.I kept telling her they would ease some of the strain etc and that alot of nurses wore them. She was completely shocked and loved them instantly. She now has them in several colors and says often,it is so nice to have something she can slip on rather than the orthopedic black tennis shoes her doctor limited her too which she had to have someone else lace up.She wore them to the doc appt. and he said way to go,one more thing to let you be more independent. My mom loves them as at home she would just go barefoot before and it was hard on her,now she slips on her Crocs and they make walking easier for her.GO CROCS!!!!

I never made my kids ride the escalator, they were afraid of it. And where ever you may be if there’s an escalator there has to be an elevator. I will always find the elevator when I am with my kids. Escalators are dangerous and should have a minimum age limit for those idiot parents that force their kinds on them.
As far the Cros go they are ugly but obviously have many benefits for people who chose to wear them. And I agree that this company is suffering at the hands of people who seem to think it’s the shoes….. OK, here’s an idea maybe the escalators should have an IQ requirment……

What idiot wears crocs while bike-riding? Okay, these shoes are not made for biking or prolonged athletic activity. Just like stilettos, flip-flops, espadrilles, wedges...just wear gym shoes to play sports. Wear the adorable crocs to the pool. Problem solved.
