The world of conservative punditry is in a tizzy after Michelle Malkin wondered if Dunkin' Donuts spokescheerleader Rachael Ray wasn't wearing a keffiyeh in a recent television ad. Just to be safe, Dunkin' Donuts pulled the ad.
I won't launch into any ad hominem attacks of Michelle Malkin, much as I'd like to right now. But I will offer up a few facts:
- The keffiyeh is an ancient traditional headdress worn by men, and is most connected to the Bedouins. While the keffiyeh was worn by both Yasser Arafat and Che Guevara, it was also worn by bohemian American girls in the 1980s.
- Critics of the keffiyeh's symbolism point to its connection with Palestinians and Fatah. However, Palestinians themselves wear the headdresses no matter what their party affiliation or political leanings.
- Arabs are not all terrorists. In fact, most Arabs are not terrorists. Connecting an ancient traditional garment worn by millions across dozens of countries to a tiny (no matter how awful) faction of criminals seems racist.
- Rachael Ray is not wearing a keffiyeh in this picture. She is wearing a paisley scarf with a fringe, selected by her stylist. Honestly, I don't think it looks great on her, but what do I know.

Wow...uhhh. While I agree whole heartedly with you that this is absurd, this post has absolutely no place on Bloggingstocks. Full Stop.
I come here for the excellent insight on the business world. I have ZERO interest in reading about a political issue on here, and I sincerely hope that this sort of post does not ever show up here again.
There are a multitude of excellent political sites where the high quality observations, and rational logic of this piece would do quite well. This is not one of them.
Thanks,

Atleast there is one American company who has earned the right to be deemed patriotic. Maybe the scarf has no meaning, but I am proud of Dunkin Donuts for speaking up for we Americans. The rest of our large organizations have changed sides.

I agree, the most patriotic thing to do was silently crush the dissenters. The scarf wearing terrorist Rachel Ray is far too good with a knife to be anything but anti-American.

Wait one minute what is that in the background, that might resemble a masjid or mosque?
Whoo Whoo wait one more second, what are those cherry blossoms on the trees? The symbolism of cherry blossoms became part of Japanese consciousness in the 9th century. From the end of the 19th century, the Japanese military government started to use cherry blossoms as a symbol of young soldiers willing to sacrifice themselves for their country. Your right this should have been yanked...GIVE ME A BREAK. PUT IT BACK ON THE AIR.

Oh, come on! An uproar over a scarf? Well, I hope this means "Barack Heisman Obama" will be kicked out of the race. Imagine... an American politican with the name Heisman? He must be a terriorist. Dunkin Donuts just wasted a whole lot of money on stupidity.

I can't believe that a large company could be so easily intimidated. It DOES belong on a stock page as it says a great deal about this companies leadership. Doughnuts have a hole in the middle - c'mon use your imagination and someone can make this one fly. These people must have feathers. Should be sent over to Purdue for flock training - and eventually a better use.

I love your post and I totally disagree about whether it "belongs" here. It is ALWAYS appropriate to speak up against the right-wing fanatics who are pushing this country ever closer to becoming a fascist state, where one has to be careful about speech (or apparel) lest it offend Big Brother. I also posted about the Rachel Ray ad (and I provided a link to your post) on my blog:

This is plain stupid and racist. It is more offensive that Donkin Donut took down an ad because of right-wing wacko racist nuts hatred of Arabs. Donkin Donuts hate Arabs.

The post belongs. Dunkin Donuts' stock price most like will -- and absolutely deserves to -- go right into the deep fryer. I'm against terrorism but I'm equally certain neither DD nor RR had any pro-terrorist intentions in creating these ads, which with a name like RR were NOT cheap. Instead of taking an incredible opportunity to get free publicity and have Rachel show the scarf's paisley design up close on every news channel on the globe -- and to denounce MM as the REAL terrorist in this case -- DD instead chose to show the backbone and entrepreneurial flair of a unbelievably passive species of jellyfish. Compete with Starbucks or McDonald's in an industry that's going to hurt for this business cycle anyhow? No way. If an ultra-racist like Michelle Malkin, Ann Colter, Rush Limbaugh or Adolf Hitler (oops -- scratch the last one -- web site cancelled for some reason) tells us that Lady Liberty looks like she's stripping out of a burka, should New York City get rid of her? I'm calling this a STRONG sell.

Really?? This is news? Way to go FOX. BTW, I am soooo scared of being terrorized right now, that I won't even watch the Simpsons. UNITED STATES CITIZENS wake TFU!!! What the hell is wrong with you people?? Are you all really that terror-filled that you think the people WHO ALREADY FAILED YOU ONCE, will not let this happen again??? By once, I was being sarcastic. And yet, people still drive drunk and kill innocent people, but thats OK. We pay so damn much in TAXES to be protected, that they couldn't protect us, and they say, 19 people outwitted the ever smart USA, ooops... TRUST US this time, we got it right now... All you bible thumpin, religious believin, god fearin, arab hating, athiest preachin, 10 commandment non believers, jesus bashin, democrat/republican losers need to wake up and smell the CRAP. Gas isn't cheaper, there weren'y ANY WMD's, we pay GWB's gas bill, AND all you people (who voted for him) think his cow pies don't stink. And people like the stupid BROAD/MAN (you know who) have the nerve to call good people traitors or my personal favorite, un-patriotic. People, please, as a fellow american, I'm begging you, please stop being ignorant. This has nothing to do with whether you agree or disagree with the poster, or with Dunkin Donuts.
This post, while well written, has NOTHING to do with business. This belongs on a political blog. I will stop reading BloggingStocks (and I know I'm not alone) if this sort of post becomes de riguer.

Michelle Malkin should stick to news instead of trying to interpret fashion accessories. The scarf, which she has cleverly called "hate couture" bears little to no resemblance to the keffiyeh, as I have yet to see one with a paisley design. They are typically houndstooth, plaid or have a checkered pattern, but hey I'm not an expert. Apparently she is, and figured out that if you associate a lifeless scarf and uber-lively Rachel Ray with the word "terrorism" it gets things done. Not only do I pity Ms. Malkin, but I pitty the stylist who picked out the scarf in the first place. Terrorist attire or not...paisley is so last year.

What is the matter with this country. The lady is wearing a scarf.Whoever decided it was looking like a scarf the terrorists wear, has to get a life.
Nothing better to do but make an issue from this pic. Isn't there enough pressing things going on. I suggest you keep up with the news or read a news paper. Get a job, Get a life!!
No, I don't believe Dunkin Donuts doesn't hates Arabs, people of all cultures work in the company still I think it was ridculous to take the ad off.
I could go on but why wait my time if I have to deal with narrow minded ignorant people thinking that the Scarf and terrorism is related.
Thank Goodness there are just a small amount of narrow minded people out there just waiting to nit pick.

Look, America has gone crazy. Anybody with common since @ all would know that Muslims wouldn't be wearing a scarf around their neck, Duh!! Muslims that you call terrorist wear them on their heads. They follow by the Bible and Quran. In the bible in Corinthians it tells women to cover their heads and body as well, but does anyone who believe in the Bible do it?? Nope. So before judging someone for wearing headscarfs or someone who has a scarf around their neck, don't judge what they believe in. At least they are well respected in a sense, they don't show off their skin to the world, or they never get raped unlike the ones whom show off their skin. They have more respect for themselves, and that kills a lot of people up in here. Now that I cleared that up, this lady only have a scarf around her neck not her head. Muslims don't wear it around their neck. *Sighs* Research stuff and stop believing in everything the media tells you.
On a second note: Obama's name is actually hebrew, not arabic(not a Muslim name). Research that as well. Obama would be our best choice for America. Clinton lies to much and she hides stuff from America, how could you trust that?? McCain will keep America in debt, go ahead vote a 3rd time around for another Bush, we ain't in debt as it is... Think and research... http://freeyourminds.ning.com/

This subject has a place here, as it is a commenet on Dunkin' Donuts' management's weakness. If it will fold on such a minor issue with just the threat of controversy, I question its ability to stand up to bigger challenges.

Block her show, pull the advertizing and put her in prison.
