It's heartbreaking to hear about the increasing numbers of homeless people as a result of the subprime mortgage crisis and the ensuing foreclosures. It's even more distressing to read that 2 million children will be affected as a result. Many who join the ranks of the homeless are actually middle-class families. Many are renters of homes that were foreclosed. Practically all of them never expected to be in this situation. According to a study released in April by the National Coalition for the Homeless, "76% of displaced homeowners and renters are moving in with relatives and friends. About 54% are moving to emergency shelters. About 40% are already on the streets."
Well, I find this whole situation infuriating for several reasons. One is personal responsibility. I can't help but wonder how a middle-class family with two earners does not save enough for a rainy day. And if you can't manage that, what were you doing buying a 3,000-square foot house in the first place?
Another reason this is all so infuriating is lack of proper laws to protect tenants of foreclosed homes. What are renters to do if they're not even notified in time to arrange their affairs? What are they to do if they lose their deposits? What are they to do if the new owner doesn't assume the rental responsibilities? More protection is required in such situations.
Then there is good old plain greed and callousness. Somehow, they always seem to go hand in hand. The housing market is oversupplied, we hear. There is a great deal of inventory standing empty. Many foreclosed homes stand empty. So it wasn't enough that lenders, with their greed, brought the country to this mess, now they can't even see a way to redeem themselves. It's true, they're not in the business of renting homes out, but if there are empty homes, and there are homeless people, then perhaps they should. Or at least find a way to get those empty homes filled out.
Knowing them, they'll likely to still manage exploit the public even in this while making a buck or two for themselves, then why not do something good for a change?

As I have said many times - this present situation is new and unique. The only things that accompany it will be the old ones of greed, avarice and scams aplenty. This is likely to get worse and those that brought this about will feel pain too. Plenty of the rich and well-to-do were in bread lines in the 30's. The problems are world wide and this is going to be more than a recession.

Unemployment is fairly low right now, there are plenty of houses and apartments for rent. This article has Liberal written all over it.

Call me callous but the majority of foreclosures do not deserve my sympathy. I can sympathize with foreclosures due to loss of job or illness but overextending yourself is no ones fault but your own...As the saying goes, "if it sounds to good to be true than it isn't"
Live within your means and purchase within your means...

So, Republican McBush ass-kissers have all the answers, yet for the past 8 years we have watched this country go down the tube totally. Where was McBush then?. Boasting about his 'bravery' in Viet Nam when in fact he spilled his guts to the commies. Nobody want's to talk about that little inconvenient truth.
The Republican party is a total and absolute FIASCO. Those thin lipped gits should be horsewhipped and their asses kicked all the way back to whoever was stupid enough to elect them. Our country is in disgrace at home and abroad and we are all up to our asses in debt because of the Republican SPEND AND CHARGE economic 'plan'. Look around folks....your kids are inheriting a DISASTER brought on by the Republican moronic idiots that YOU elected. Being a Jesus Freak Republican doesn't mean you are SMART.

Wow, so some of you are suggesting we return to the "high class" Democratic days of Bill Clinton? The guy who lacked the decency to hire a motel room and did her right in the Oval Office? Can't get more low class than that. You think thats OK?? Lost track of how many others in that administration did jail time or ended up dead. I couldn't care less what the rest of the world thinks of the US...their envy/cowardice/back-stabbing speaks volumes about their national agenda. Yes, the republicans have been spending..... on national security issues out of our control.Protecting our civilians.... Its got a better return than paying for the bottomless pit of social services for human dregs who have not improved their condition since the era of FDR. Think those sub prime mortages went to republicans or democrats? I think we can guess. Renters should at least be given a decent amount of notice of the home owner is in default. The bank should be obligated to do so. At the moment, no one is lined up to buy the house anyway. They are not losing anything by givin them time.

It's not just a temporary situation this time this is forever as the oil output declines. The real rulers the robber barrons never went away-Rockefellers, JP Morgan and they have outsourced real jobs, and are damn happy busting us down into the street as they were in the 1930's. They are investing in China for cheap labor, busting unions here, killing us and bankrupting competition to buy us back like they did in Germany backing Adolf Hitler. They play all sides for fun and profits and they are pure evil. 911 wasn't what they told you and GW Bush never won any election. It was a coup, and America lost tothe fascists. Tried back in the 1930's too but FDR stopped them with USMC General Smedley who spilled the beans. This time we had corrupt generals like Myers who were part of the plan. This is just the begining.

Good catch, Kelly. I should have mentioned that the respondents had multiple answers they could choose from. Thanks!

With math like this, it's no wonder our country is in trouble. Since when did 76, 54, and 40 add up to 100%?
