Doug pointed out recently that the new Samsung Instinct most likely could not save Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) from its current financial and customer woes. He's right -- one phone does not resurrect a company. However, the Instinct -- which looks and functions very similar to an Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone -- is still selling like hotcakes. My guess? It's all due to Apple, not Sprint. The Instinct, which apparently has become Sprint's best-selling 3G phone product ever in a very short time, is an impressive device. Feature-for-feature, it's right there with the upcoming 3G iPhone about to be released in a few weeks. Independent research that counted the movement of Instinct phones at 100 Sprint stores around the country report that it's selling out fast. Sprint contends that the smartphone is the fastest-selling phone in Sprint's history up to this point.
But, to those customers of Sprint (new and old) who just can't see themselves joining AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T) just to get an iPhone, the Instinct is apparently turning out to be a perfect equivalent. If Apple had never released the original iPhone, the Instinct may have never been born. Apple, as usual, has made other hardware companies realize that hardware needs to be elegant, and software needs to be way elegant. The clumsy designs and complex cellphone interfaces may soon be extinct, thanks to Apple. And, Sprint's sales of the Samsung Instinct will at least owe partial credit to the iPhone maker.

Sprint's "best selling 3G device" ... gee, that must've been quite a lofty competitor ... is that the same as 'best tasting water buffalo' and 'easiest to use WIN CE device?' And as you point out, what exactly were the cell phone makers producing BEFORE the iphone 365 days ago? They were basically standing around with their hands in their pockets.

The restuarant I work at sells hotcakes and they don't sell like "hotcakes "
Until this point, I thought, if you were going into business and wanted to sell something that sells like hotcakes, why not sell hotcakes themselves ?

Big downside, you have to deal with SPRINT! Their service SUCKS! And they treat the customer like the enemy. I just finally finished my Sprint contract and I'll NEVER go back to them!! I went to AT&T and the service reps were WONDERFUL and very helpful.

"Chef" Alfred,
Maybe your pancakes would sell like hotcakes if you learned to spell correctly.

The 'all touch screen' Blackberry Thunder will outsell them both when it makes its debut this September exclusively at Verizon.

Have you ever seen hotcakes, flying off the store shelves I think not. Anyways, don't you think it would be quite messy with butter and syrup.

Everyone says that Sprint service sucks... but I have to tell you, I was on the phone with them the other day when I switched my cell phones out to a different used phone and wasn't recieving texts.... and the service was AWESOME! She was pleasant and helpful and I totally got everything worked out in no time.
I just wish they would make these phones with Nextel direct connect because I would be all over it! Nextel phones are hideous... :(

I had Sprint for 2 years, under contract, and they were the WORST! Couldn't make a call from many random spots in the city, and this is a big city, not Podunk USA. When I finally cancelled my service, I got a hassle from the idiot customer service person. There is no piece of technology that would bring me back to Sprint!

i recently bought the Instinct OVER the iphone because i could not justify spending $90 a month on a voice plan ONLY .. this did not include data or even text msgs and the $90 was only for 900 minutes! after a&t decided to raise their plan prices, so sure they could gouge people just because everyone would be clamoring for the iphone, i decided to take my $199 elsewhere. as a 2 day old sprint customer i must confess their customer service reps are idiots and that is mostly due to outsourcing, but i called in to ask a question and was able to get a person who did comprehend english and had no problems and when i dropped by the store to pick up my phone the store reps were very very knowledgeable, plesant upbeat and made the transaction seamless!

You say " I went to AT&T and the service reps were WONDERFUL and very helpful."
Thats because they employ the best in the "new service sign-up" area. Wait until you you try the back office support area to change options/equpment/etc.. You will be amazed the the lack of ability to do the simplistic of things. I have been the receiving end of crappy service from AT&T, Sprint & Verizon. If I were to pick the least of the worst. It would be Verizon.

Hey, jbelkin, you must have come from another planet just last year! "What exactly were the cell phone makers producing BEFORE the iphone 365 days ago?" Let me remind you that HTC (Qtek, iMate, O2...) is the the biggest name in PDA's for many years, with functions that Apple didn't even think the iPhoney needed. They (Apple) didn't know about 3G, about MMS, customizable mp3, WMA, WAV ringtones, playing just about any audio & video format out there, GPS.... Also, you can make a Pocket PC look and feel (act) like an iPhone, but also having many more features, but you can't do anything with Apple toy. Sure, what it does, it does VERY well, but it just doesn't do enough. You better look into it and see for yourself, then do the talking!

I was a Sprint Customer for 9 years and although a few times I did receive great service, I would be more inclined to attribute that to a few select good employees versus the entire company being a great customer service provider. I have been with AT&T now for close to 6 months and I must admit not only is the service better but the all around ease of use is exponentially better. Let it also be noted that the Insight is a blatant copy of the Iphone, and in what world does the company that copies another actually stand a chance at thus super ceding it at anything? Just wait a few months till AT&T comes up with something new and Sprint has to hustle to keep up...as a side note Sprint might be out of business by 2010 so enjoy it while it lasts

I'm going to stick wih ATT because you can say what you want but imitation is the best form of flattery! I went to Jamaica several years ago and out of a wedding party of 43 people, I had the only working cellphone. Even the Jamaicans were amazed to see an America cell phone work in their country. I only have the 900 minute plan which equals 15 hours of talking. I look at it this way if you can spend 15 hours on a cellphone, unless you are in business, you're talking way too much and have no life.

as an EX- AT&T rep it would be the smartest move anyone with a cell phone coule make to stay away from AT&T or any of the major carriers for that matter. Every one of them is nothing but a ripoff. Remember you 39.99 plan???? yea right no less than 100.00 per month and it only goes up. never in my life have i seen a BIGGER RIP_OFF than the big 3 cell services

Like I said before "Imitation is the best form of flattery" The new and improved iPhone with be out next week and then we'll see how the chips fall. When Apple does something, it does it well and nothing like a cellphone that works hand and hand with your computer. No fuss, no muss. I'll bet you a fat man that Impact won't do that!

AT&T?? You HAVE to be kidding me! I have friends with iPhones and I don't even bother to leave voice mail messages on their phones because THEY NEVER GET THEM! AT&T has the WORST network, and they charge ridiculous prices. And the iPhone is overpriced for what it delivers. The Instinct is far superior and runs on a great network (Sprint). I have had Sprint service for 10 years and have never had an issue -- I'm sticking with it!
