Doug pointed out recently that the new Samsung Instinct most likely could not save Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) from its current financial and customer woes. He's right -- one phone does not resurrect a company. However, the Instinct -- which looks and functions very similar to an Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone -- is still selling like hotcakes. My guess? It's all due to Apple, not Sprint. The Instinct, which apparently has become Sprint's best-selling 3G phone product ever in a very short time, is an impressive device. Feature-for-feature, it's right there with the upcoming 3G iPhone about to be released in a few weeks. Independent research that counted the movement of Instinct phones at 100 Sprint stores around the country report that it's selling out fast. Sprint contends that the smartphone is the fastest-selling phone in Sprint's history up to this point.
But, to those customers of Sprint (new and old) who just can't see themselves joining AT&T, Inc. (NYSE: T) just to get an iPhone, the Instinct is apparently turning out to be a perfect equivalent. If Apple had never released the original iPhone, the Instinct may have never been born. Apple, as usual, has made other hardware companies realize that hardware needs to be elegant, and software needs to be way elegant. The clumsy designs and complex cellphone interfaces may soon be extinct, thanks to Apple. And, Sprint's sales of the Samsung Instinct will at least owe partial credit to the iPhone maker.

Ok. First off. I work for AT&T. I have had cell phone service with EVERY major company. Every carrier has issues. THere isnt one that has PERFECT customer service. BUT> I KNOW that sprint/nextel are dirty. They play dirty. If you call them to get a phone replaced, they sign u up for a new 2 yr agreement without even telling you. Tell them your canceling? they will put a block on ur # to keep another company from porting it in. I am not siding with apple or att at this moment. BUT, the Samsung INstinct is CHEAP. not in price. CHEAPLY made. At&t Didnt raise the prices of our rate plans. THe $90 is for your minutes and the data package for the iphone. WHICH WAS implimented by apple. THe reason for this change was so they could lower the price of the handset.
Anymore questions feel free to speak to an 100% english representative. nb4669@att.com.

I've been with Sprint for seven years and while I've only had service problems a few times I agree about the customer service. Before returning to college I had 12 years of customer service experience. You do not treat customers the way some of Sprints reps do. I recently got a broad band card, but it couldn't get a signal in my area and I returned it to Best Buy where I got it. Both the Best Buy sales girl and I had a very ignorant, hateful rep, which I hung up on and we called back. The next rep was better and I received a $25.00 dollar credit on my cell phone bill. While I'm not thrilled with Sprint overall I have reliable service, but I prefer to work with the store personal. Phone reps suck.
Lastly about the Instinct, I wanted one until I was told I had to use the simply everything plan to have one. What a load of BS. Since when can a carrier tell you what plan to get? Does AT&T do this with the iPhone?

I am a sprint customer using an old samsung smart phone. I can't move to the instinct as it has very limited business applications...a phone book with a max of 600 records; my i500 has 5000 records. Samsung does have the next version of the instinct ready to go (omnia) with all the business applications I need but they won't sell it in the US. So, the iPhone2 with thousands of app developers standing by will be the choice. By the way, the instinct can't even act as phone-as-modem. They intentionally killed many preannounced features that made it a consumer-only device.

I THINK I'M GOING TO WAIT A LITTLE LONGER BEFORE I GET ONE OF THOSE FANCY "DO IT ALL PHONES". THE PRICE OF TECHNOLOGY ALWAYS GO'S DOWN AND THE PRODUCT GETS BETTER. SO I'LL WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR AND GET IT FOR HALF THE PRICE.I DON'T WANT TO SUBSCRIBE TO A COSTLY CORPERATE COMPANY. I JUST WANNA MAKE A PHONE CALL AND PAY AS I GO. SO MY LITTLE TRACPHONE WILL DO TILL THEN. ;)

With sprint you are always getting voicemails 1, 2 weeks later. On the other hand I can be out an about and get 10 messages and have no missed calls. I am in Kansas City (home to thier massive empty headquarters) and in both my homes I can not get service and I live in the center of population, not on the outer edge of the cities. I am happy with my $99 plan, unlimited everything except directory service. And I like my simple A900 phone because unlike all of you I will never figure out the iPhone, or Sprints copy of it :-)

I must not be wired the same way others are because when I buy a cell phone I'm looking for it to be a really good phone, and that's all. I don't need it to be an MP3 player, a video player, a gaming device and internet enabled to boot.
I want clear reception, no dropped calls or dead zones and a decent priced 3 year contract with around 900 free mins. A GPS would be nice, but not mandatory. IMO, The more functions you have in one device the better the odds some program will crash, leaving you talking to customer service.

I have had Sprint service for 10 years and have never had an issue -- I'm sticking with it!
You might have to stick with them - when I finally cancelled my service after 6 years of dealing with idiots, they told me I had to come into there store (30 miles away) to cancel it. It took me 2 days of calling to finally get them to go away and quit billing me.

Why does everyone in the USA only get the phones from the carriers, locked on their network and tied to certain plans, after which they start complaining? Just buy unlocked phones people! That's what most of us do in Europe. This way we can choose exactly what phone we really want (like, etc.), choose what provider we want and what service plan we want!!! Is this so hard to do in the States? Don't you have enough phones to choose from, in your stores? Go here http://www.gsmarena.com/ and see that there are many, many models in this world, not just Apple's and Blackberry's. Yes, Samsung is one of the best and easiest (user friendly) to use, but there are sooooo many other models out there!
