When eBay, Inc. (NASDAQ: EBAY) recently began focusing on being more of a retail storefront than an online auction site, many saw it as the nail in the coffin of what was once an internet darling. Higher fees, angry sellers and a multitude of changes at eBay in recent years have many writing the company off as progress peaked in 2004 and has been falling ever since. Even former CEO Meg Whitman did not waste a chance on going over her self-imposed 10-year stint as the company's leader, having now left the company as of last year.To add insult to injury, free classified listings are popping up all over the web to take over for what made eBay so powerful: connecting buyers and sellers for a transaction outside of the normal retail landscape. This grassroots commerce is what made eBay what it is. Its customers -- buyers and sellers -- did not want a normal retail transaction; they wanted a flea market and that is what eBay became. Except, that "flea" became an 800-pound gorilla.
Free classified providers like Oodle are winning business all over the web for niche audiences like those at MySpace.com and Walmart.com, two of Oodle's larger customers. Even localized free classified websites like Oklahoma City's OK4Free.com are getting in on the action. These are free websites to list items on -- unlike eBay. And they could be eating eBay's lunch soon if not already. To some who think eBay is turning into an also-ran in the online classified business, the welcome (albeit, smaller) competition is a good thing. Now, if someone could build a directory of all these free classified sites, customer defection from eBay could be quite a bit more rapid.

Ebay/Paypal are going under, real soon. Wait til word breaks about the counterfeit scheme with liquidation.com, it's gonna get bad.
To see more on the counterfeit scheme, you can click the link below (If you don't like to click links, just go to youtube and type in "paypal counterfeit" without the quotes.)

I've been selling on ebay for 10 years now, sold thousands of cool and collectible items - worked great! Perfect record, lots of good interactions with folks all over the world! But I'm leaving now - ebay has some pretty strange policies now that seem to "demonize" sellers and leave us at the mercy of buyers (you just need one flakey buyer and ebay says you're out - no recourse) . Too bad, as we're all treated like criminals - and seems like ebay's missing the real bad guys. So ebay seems to want the small sellers out, and become a "store front" for big sellers. Seems to me Ebay is giving away the major, major thing that draws folks to their site - the fact that you can find ANYTHING on ebay - certainly getting less that way as their site gets clogged with stuff you can buy at Walmart or at a craft fair - too bad. Frittering away the very thing that made them successful.

We had a fraudulent buyer buy an item on our store. I finally called the buyer, who it turned out were a nice elderly couple, only to discover their credit card was stolen and they never opened an ebay account, the crook did. The couple have never gone online before so I said I'd contact eBay and help them get it straightened out, find a phone number for them to call, etc. After an hour and 40 minutes on eBay's online customer service and being transferred to three different eBay departments, eBay never offered a phone number for the customer to call. One does not exist. I asked eBay to cancel the fraudulent auction sale and still nothing has been done, other then eBay collected fees for the fraudulent auction. I emailed eBay the same day for further assistance and have never heard back from them. eBay is a horrible company to work with. What company in the world doesn't have a land line that you can call them at? There is a reason eBay doesn't want customers calling them! I say eBay is time dated.

Ebay is plodding along down that road to huge commercial sellers like buy.com. By now, the majority of sellers large and small hate them with a passion because of it. I'm another 10 year seller who - up until Jan of this year hovered just below powerseller status. Now, I generally have an item or two listed but certainly nothing like what I did before. Even with my perfect record Ebay manages to hide my listings so almost nothing sells. I hear my story countless times...one wonders why Ebay is allowing all of this money to slide thru their fingertips while they pursue a boring catalog site like many other catalog sites. I know they're aiming for some of Amazon's business but in case they didn't already know....no Amazon buyer is going to leave there to shop on Ebay. There is no customer service - no safeguards for buyers on Ebay. Ebay only wants to "look" like amazon but there will be little behind it all but window dressing. In the meantime us sellers have to stand by and watch the slow death of something we all loved, and in many cases, depended upon. Yes, Ebay will fail and the crackpot management team behind all this nonsense will also fail. That's the day I'm waiting for!

Now that Ebay has given us the shaft even tho we made them the success they "were" (I've been selling & buying for 10+ years), every day I look at their stock prices going down, down, down, I say it's another great day..!!!!! Glad I sold the stock months ago when I made a profit. It's the only good thing I've gotten out of Ebay lately. Now I hope they go right down the sewer..and the sooner, the better..!!!!! Good riddance.

I watch listing and stock market reports daily and I know that since Ebay announced all their changes back in January their listing numbers have dropped as well as the stock. The stock took a while (5 months) because everytime Ebays listing numbers dropped they would do a special and pick up 3 million or so listings. Then people got tired of falling for that and Ebay made a deal with Buy.com to list free. Guess what? 3 million listings showed up to hide the low listings caused by boycotters. The boycotters are the bread and butter of Ebay not a seller like Buy that sells the same stuff as Walmart for more money. Compare the prices ebay screwed up big. As for local competition I know lots of people who changed venues. They may or may not do as good but they all realized Ebay was a dead end street and they were given the message by ebay that they needed to find new futures. Many did and many still struggle or went back to work. Ebay has lost its core and its identity. It's over.

eBay already is losing business to local classified sites. In the Salt Lake City area, more and more you here people talking about putting things up on KSL.com - we hear less and less of putting things up on eBay. This is especially true for vehicles. Selling a car on the internet = KSL in almost every case.

Buy it Cheaper on eBay ...advertising has cost eBay a bundle!
People want to buy stuff cheaper and cheaper on eBay. This cannot be good for their bottom line.
Sellers list their items for sale because they obviously want to make some money not give away their merchandise!
They can make better money selling at a yard sale guaranteed!
eBay wants their sellers to give away their merchandise and then pay them for the privilage of doing so, lol.
More and more people are turning away from eBay. eBay is a turn -off.
