This post is one in a series on prominent company nicknames. See all 25, and share your thoughts and memories about Walley World below in the comments.
When Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) began transforming from a regional discount chain to a national retail powerhouse in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the company caught the attention of consumers and business critics alike. The company has never been the same since, and after its meteoric rise in the 1990s, it is easily deserving of its alter ego, Walley World. Why, might you ask?
The term comes from a fictional amusement park in the 1983 comedy film National Lampoon's Vacation. The sprawling amusement park, which the Griswold family travels cross country for, turns out to be closed. This, of course, makes hilarity ensue as Chevy Chase's character hijacks the entire park to make sure his family has a good time after the disastrous journey to get there.
The sheer size and "everything under the sun" mentality of the park set the tone for Wal-Mart to be called "Walley World" soon thereafter. This was probably due to a comparison to the amusement park's enormous size as well as the parking lot depicted in the film -- which resembles a cement desert without end.
And thus, the real retail embodiment of Walley World was born. The name still sticks with millions of consumers to this day. Even some of my own family never use the term "Wal-Mart" -- its Walley World (always). The world's largest retailer may even seem to some to be more like an amusement park these days, with hordes of bargain-happy shoppers, a quarter-mile walk from the parking lot to the store and everything from tires to bananas to flat-screen televisions all under one roof.
Is Wal-Mart really being hurt by the Walley World moniker? One would think not, but then again, the retailer's PR folks probably don't like it or the mental association it creates. Still, it's an adventure when one travels from home to Walley World. It's just a shopping trip for $1 plastic clothes hangers when you make the beeline from home to Wal-Mart, right?

I am a Wal-Mart associate and have been for over 8 years now... I began working in the TLE dept and 1 year later, I came up with 2 characters and named them Wally & Marty...(everybody loved them) to help promote services that we performed in the Automotive dept and throught out the store...I was told by my store manager that he was going to have some costumes made up and 2 associates could walk around the store, talk to children and parents, unfortunatlly nothing ever became of it and Wally & Marty...have been shelved...I would really like to bring Wally & Marty back to the attention of Management...please tell me what you think!
Thank You!

BEST PART ABOUT WALLY WORLD IS YOU CAN PURCHASE WHAT YOU NEED AND TAKE IT BACK WHEN YOURE FINISHED AND GET YOUR MONEY BACK! THE RETURN LINE IN MY HOMETOWN IS LONGER THAN THE CHECKOUT LINES ALTOGETHER. WALLY WORLD IS A LARGE LOAN DEPARTMENT STORE.THE CRAP THEY SELL IS ONLY GOOD FOR ONE TIME USAGE! IF I COULD NOT RETURN IT I WOULD SHOP ELSEWHERE.KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WALLY.ITS NICE TO HAVE SOMEBODY TO SCREW

i don't even care what it's called. all i know is walmart is not the place for anyone to go to. they terminate people for reasons that they think are reasonable. they lie about the investigations when it comes to termining of whether an associate is going to be able to work there or are they going to be terminated. the way i can tell is because i was told that. my advice to you guys don't ever shop there. because the assistant management always makes employees treat u like trash. u guys don't want that. believe me.

I worked for wally-world and the reason for the nickname is that wal-mart is a joke. I guess you could relate the nick name wally world to the movie because it's all just a joke. The way Wal-mart treats there employees it must be some kind of elaborate joke. No money No real schudeling and no real Managers. Just a bunch of wannabe's. LOL

I call it WallyMart or Uncle Wally. I have a love-hate relationship with wal-mart. I love the low prices, but I hate it because it takes all my money. I go there so often, it's Uncle Wally, a part of the family.

I don't know where the nickname actually came from. But it wasn't the movie, the movie used that term because it was already common usage across the country. My family has been calling it that since the mid to late 70's.

Disneyland was founded by Walt (Wally )Disney. After his death the company was taken over by his brother Roy....hence the owner of Walley World in the movie was "Roy Wally" filmed at Majic Mountain amusement park just outside the San Fernando Valley, north of Los Angeles.

All these comments are interesting concerning Wal-Mart. I would suggest that #8(barb key) try working for Target because the employees there tell me its that way there also concerning work conditions. The majority of the Wal-Mart employees that I interview say they would like more pay but that they knew the pay scale when they went to work there. Wal-Mart by any name brings to mind low prices and the smiley face. You cannot escape it.Go Wal-Mart RoudMan
