The cold war between Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and the unions is heating up again.Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that the world's largest retailer had warned employees that a Democratic president would back the Employee Free Choice Act, a law that would make it easier for unions to organize workers, which the company opposes. The paper now is saying that the union groups have asked the Federal Election Commission to investigate the matter, which they claim violates federal law.
Of course, this is a brilliant public relations move by the unions. First of all, the FEC is as toothless as some Wal-Mart greeters. Even if the FEC finds that Wal-Mart broke the law, the worst that the company will get is a slap -- make that a tickle -- on the wrist. That may not even happen until well into an Obama administration, which brings up my next point.
Why is Wal-Mart set to pick a fight with the Democrats? Don't the folks in Bentonville read the political tea leaves? Odds are pretty good that the country will go Blue in a big way. Maybe the company is worried that the good times reflected in today's results won't last.

Unions are not worth the time .. and in case the writer of above article hasn't noticed it has already been said there would be no landslide winner in this election so going blue in a big way must mean when the union starts choking its memebers for more dues . I can't stand anything that plays on the minds of the poor or middle class working person and unions do .

The "Unions" should oprn the "Docks",(ILWU) to
everyone and not be a closed shop. Walmart keeps prices low because no union demands.

As a retired member of the UAW, I am proud of my union and its fight for workers rights and saftey for over 70 years. The UAW and other unions have fought for womens rights, ciivil rights, and workplace saftey for union workers. These struggles have helped set a standard for ALL Americian working middle class. Walmart is a great example of why unions are needed to protect the average American worker. Do you really think the largest private employer in the US is fair to thier employees? Thats why Walmart is afraid of unions.

its all about money, wal mart has it and wont share it. no one at wal mart is going from $7.00 an hour to $20.00 an hour. thats wal mart hype, but they will have to treat their employees better. hell , most managers cant stand the place. upper mgt. needs an eye opener, and i dont mean a drink. they'll be doing enough of that after the dems. get in.

Maybe the unions can do for Wal-Mart what the UAW did for GM, Ford, and Chrysler -- a crippled and helpless and shrinking enterprise. Unions - once America builders, now America destroyers.
Union greed is a terrible thing. Unions - the new poison.

To the Billy Bobs of the world including "Johnny"Berr. Wal-Mart is certainly not perfect and some of the management needs to do jail time but overall they help more than they hurt. The average pay is $10-$12 for full time employees which could be better also. But I am sure if the union gets involved there will be to many problems just like with the auto workers who like to tell their bosses when they will work and that they cannot be laid off without many consessions first.RoudMan

I once worked for a Six Sigma company. If anyone is familiar with this ideal, it is when the company underpays it workers, cheats the public, and strives to make 20% increases in their margins for 6 years in a row. The company I worked for treated the blue collar workers in a fashion that we would not treat animals. Each day, these workers were threatened with being fired, suffered unexpected overtime, suffered demeaning comments and low pay. Workers were constantly being replaced so that the company could avoid health care for their workers, so each 120 days there was a new crew. This is where a union is needed! I am a conservative and couldn't bear what I witnessed. I turned them in at a state level, and nothing was done to help our blue collar workers. Unions do have a purpose.

I know for a fact that Wal-Mart Associates can move up and make a very good wage. I used to work at Wal-Mart. I have seen where a Greeter made $19.00 an hour. Associates get raises every year unless they are maxed out in thier current job.
When Associates at Wal-Mart have a concern they can use the open door and voice it to management directly. No dues necesary! Wal-Marts insurance benefits are better than what I have now.
Unions are only after Wal-Mart for the huge cash flow they would enjoy if they could unionize Wal-Mart.

Walmart actually pays better than Target and other retailers here in Minnesota which is wise. However it will pay much lower in other locations depending on the economic conditions. Pressure by unions does keep them on their toes and forces at least some benefits. New management tools like Six Sigma baloney are ruthless 19th century garbage and will backfire. Slicksters in business schools and managers will always think up new ways to cut costs-it's their job, but it's just money and the bottom line and long term it pays to be fair and recieve a fair profit too. Temps with no benefits getting fired every six months is no way to have a country or a business and long term it's self defeating. These businesses don't last, Walmart needs to be around, they're vulnerable so unless they want a Jimmy Hoffa to emerge and force it with bats in the street against the cops and company goons someday better to be fair. At a certain point people will take to the streets for real. Hu just raised wages in China 8% so it will hit them on both sides.

To All You Union Hatters, Go to your History books and see what it was like before there were unions. If you all had to work that way, maybe you would change your tunes. I have worked both, non union and union, I am a Union Laborer now in construction. Tell me, right now, where a high school grad can work (with out college education) and make over $26.00 per hour? I no why some feel the way they do about unions, but for me, I have raised a family of 4, on my union wage, just fine. Big D Ohio

TO ROUDY 11 Z ,THINK $10.00 AN HOUR IS OK ? TRY AND LIVE ON IT. THE AUTO MAKERS WERE ARROGANT IDIOTS THAT THOUGHT ALL CARS FROM JAPAN WERE GARBAGE AND SCREWED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND SOLD THEM INFERIOR PRODUCTS. IT BIT THEM ON THE ASS JUST LIKE THOSE ARROGANT BASTARDS AT WAL MART. THEIR DAY WILL COME.

Unions would destroy WalMart. The retail sector needs to be ran by management and not by a union trying to destroy a company. If you want to see really bad service at WalMart, bring in a union.
That will turn away more customers than ever.

UNIONS TODAY ARE NOT THE UNIONS OF YESTERDAY. THEY REALIZE THAT COMPANYS HAVE TO SURVIVE FOR THEM TO SURVIVE. THOSE UNIONS THAT I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH ASK FOR FAIR PAY AND TREATMENT OF THEIR MEMBERS IN RETURN FOR A GOOD DAYS WORK. WAL MART EXPECTS OBEDIENCE FROM ITS EMPLOYEES, THERE IS LITTLE MUTUAL RESPECT. I WORK THERE NOW AND KNOW THIS FIRST HAND. SAM WALTONS IDEALS ARE GONE, BOTTOM LINE BUSINESSMEN ARE NOW RUNNING THE COMPANY. ITS CHANGED, ASK ANY HONEST LONG TIME EMPLOYEE AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THIS, AND I DON'T MEAN FOR THE BETTER. WE DO HAVE SOME BETTER BENEFITS BUT THIS IS ONLY BECAUSE OF SO MUCH OUTSIDE PRESSURE. SOME CHANGES NEED TO BE MADE.
