AC/DC made its name as one of the pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal, but the band's latest gig has a decidedly corporate ring to it: the band's new album, Black Ice, will be available exclusively (subscription required) at Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT)It's the band's first album of new material in eight years, and will be debut on October 20th at the "everyday low price" of $11.88. AC/DC's music has never been available on iTunes.
Classic rock bands including The Eagles and Journey have made albums to be sold exclusively at Wal-Mart and, while it doesn't exactly have iTunes quaking it in its boots, it is one gimmick that's keeping CD's relevant for at least a little while longer.
Artistically, it's more than a little bit pathetic to see bands that used to be so cutting-edge hocking their wares through an exclusive arrangement with the world's largest retailer.
It's a good thing The Beatles broke up so its rabid fans wouldn't have to endure stuff like this.

dumbest. move. ever.
I love AC/DC and would love to support them - and I plan to when they come to NYC on tour. However there is no Walmart anywhere in NYC...so I will be waiting to download this album from a P2P site for free, probably like every other NYC AC/DC fan.

Last I heard walmart had special censored/neutered versions of major albums on cd. That would make it the last place anyone would want to purchase a cd. AC/DC isn't exactly family friendly so I don't understand this move at all.

the reason there is no walmarts in NYC area is because the unions would burn them to the ground........wlamart is a big non-union crook, who uses their workers like slaves....low pay and no benefits

Not once have I heard anything in a blog about the new album as ridiculous as this critic's so called "opinion." Yes, the new album will be exclusively avaiable at Wal-Mart; but when was the last time you've seen a store overcrowded with anxious fans awating for album sales to begin at 12 am? It was stellar albums such as Metallica's Black Album, or Guns 'N Roses Appetite for Destruction that made US REAL fans eagerly wait in line for our chance to rush back home and listen to them. Nowadays everithing is downloaded for free and album sales plummet. Do you see people standing in line awating a new album today? I didn't think so either. You say ridiculous, I say genius. This album could "sell out" like much of today's crap that people consider to be music and sell their album for $20 or more. Now you complain about $11.88, are you kidding me? I don't care if AC/DC exclusively sells their albums at local gas stations, I'm buyin it, and you know why? AC/DC is my favorite band ever, and I will continue to be a true fan of theirs as long as I live. You better believe I will be standing in Wal-Mart until 12am strikes and I'm getting two copies. I love the music, if you did, you'd do the same.

Hell's bells! Ain't this a "touch too much"? The very thought of this "shook me all night long." WalMart certainly has "big balls." Bon Scott would be so proud. I'm "Thunderstruck."

Looks like the Axel Rose Express A.K.A. Axels' Ego A.K.A. Guns N' Posers have made a deal with the devil opps I mean the God Squad in Bentonville, ARK. Reportedly WalMart will find itself traveling further down the "Highway to Hell" by doing one of their exclusive releases with Bill Bailey A.K.A. Axel Rose.
Rose is now managed by Front Line Mangement A.K.A. Irving Azoff the same short dude that manages the newly reformed pile of money grubbing dung that preaches corporate responsibility but mostly roams from town-to-town looting dollars from the pockets of aging baby boomers A.K.A. "The Eagles" who should've entitled their comeback album "Long Road out of Sweden" instead of "Long Road out of Eden" because it really is that boring and dull. Felder got while the gettin' was good. Journey sucks too as they replaced Steve Perry with a number of singers who try theri best to sound like Steve because Neal Scheon refused to check his ego. Guitar players can be bought. Lead singers cannot.
Either way its gonna be a "Heartache Tonight" and a net loss for the music industry.

Don't worry about access to this CD, even if you live in the US. The small music store near my house often has these "exclusive" CDs. They had the Eagles a while ago, the Stones box set. I even remember seeing a McCartney live CD with the Best Buy stickers still on them.
For the guy who lives in NYC, I would ask your local CD import shops. You must still have some left. This will be available in regular stores in other countries, so I bet they can get it for you.
Bands keep doing this, so I guess it must work OK. Maybe it's all about the guaranteed check from Wal-mart vs. the uncertainities of selling CDs.
People still line up at midnight at the store near my house. I am not into Slipknot but I bet there will be some kids lining up for Slipknot tonight. I'll be asleep!
