I know, I know: forecasting the imminent demise of America's car companies is nothing new, but recent events have highlighted the kind of shortsighted planning that has plagued Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) for years. While the gas crisis has exacerbated the shortcomings of the automakers, the companies' failures to understand their core audience, invest in R&D, and ensure the quality of their finished product are long-term, endemic problems that make them a very questionable bet.
Recently, for example, General Motors' decided to offer incentives, extended protection plans, and employee pricing to draw buyers to the line; these innovations, however, have had the added impact of massively undercutting revenues. As Williams-Sonoma could now point out, slashing your profit margin is not really the best way to make a profit. While their decision to get rid of Hummer should help GM shed a pricey and currently unpopular line, by the time the sale is finished, gas prices will be back down and everybody will be driving hydrogen-powered cars.
Ford, meanwhile, has decided to focus its attention on cars, a long-term plan that doesn't seem very well thought out. While the Mustang is, perhaps, Ford's most famous model, their trucks have long been an iconic symbol of the company. Rather than invest in making their strongest sellers more fuel-efficient and thus more attractive to consumers, Ford seems to be placing its eggs in a somewhat unreliable basket.
Of course, reliability is another issue entirely. Ford's greatest problem lies in the questionable quality of their cars. Having driven a "Fraud" Mustang for a few years, the best thing I can say about the car's quality was that it was easy to repair, which means that I generally just had to pay for parts. Since then, I've watched as the brand has repeatedly been plagued with reliability issues, the latest of which was the Explorer/Firestone tire scandal.
Another problem is the (somewhat justified) perception that American cars are unreliable, poorly-designed gas guzzlers. They cost more than their overseas counterparts, and are usually a few years behind on engineering. This, in particular, has been highlighted by the recent advances in hydrogen cars: while Honda's FCX Clarity fuel cell car is out this summer, GM doesn't plan to unveil theirs for another two years and, although Ford's fuel cell vehicles have gained near-legendary status, they still aren't being offered for consumers.
While it will be a while before hydrogen cars will be a major market force, it's already pretty clear that the United States will, once again, be playing catch up in a strategic part of the automotive industry. In the meantime, rather than improve the quality of their engineering and reduce the gas consumption of their top sellers, Ford is dropping its truck line. With decision making like this, it it any surprise that foreign car companies are dominating America's roads?

What a complete idiot Mr Watson is. Not only is he clueless of the small cars Ford produces around the world, his assertion that "Ford is dropping its truck line" is from outerspace. I ask you Mr. Watson, have you ever been to Brazil, Russia, China? Have you ever viewed the streets that are filled with beautiful small Ford vehicles? Do you know what is the number one selling car in those markets is? I know your answer. Clueless

UPON READING YOUR ARTICLE IT APPEARS TOME THAT YOU HAVE ENTIRELY IGNORED ALL QUALITY COMPARISON REPORTS AND GAS MILEAGE REPORTS ( LAST YEAR ). AGAIN ON THE QUALITY ISSUE: YOU CAN HAVE YOUR FOREIGN CARS AS I HAVE DRIVEN NOTHING BUT AMERICAN CARS AND NONE FOR LESS THAT 156,000 MILES WITH MINIMAL REPAIRS. CURRENTLY I DRIVE A 1998 BUICK SKYLARK WITH 206,000 PLUS MILES AND HAVE HAD IT IT FOR 9 YEARS AND NOT A SINGLE BREAKDOWN AND ONLY NORMAL MAINTENANCE: OIL CHANGES, TIRES, TUNE UP AT EACH 100,000 MILES, ETC. MY NEXT CAR WHILE I PLAN TO KEEP MY SKYLARK AS A SECOND CAR WILL BE ANOTHER GREAT GM PRODUCT. OH, AND I GET 31 MILES PER GALLON HGWY. WITH A 3.1 LITER 6 WITH AIR COND. AND IN THE COLDEST WEATHER NEVER HAD A MORNING SHE DID NOT START UP AND SHE CONTUNUES TO PURRRRR!

This writer is an idiot. He says with the latest scandal of the Explorer/Firestone....duh wasn't this because the "tires" were faulty? Why would a car manufacturer be blamed for faulty tires? Wouldn't the tire manufacturer be blamed for the bad tires? Firestone isn't even a American company! Firestone is owned by Bridgestone which is a Japanese company. I can't stand when a writer writes things about things he doesn't know. I've owned a Ford for 22 years and not that I've "tried" to own them...it's just worked out that way. I'll buy another F150 after the one I drive now dies, it's got 200,000 miles on it so it might be another 5 years before I get another one!

This just proves my point all along. Before we read an article can we verify someones inteligence or education background. Does Mr Watson know that this country employs 15% of the population, that in some aspect or other is related to the automotive industry. That if the big 3 were ever to go out of business this country would colapse. Think about it Part suppliers part makers automotive manufacturing etc etc Get a clue Mr Watson In Japan their workers work 12-14 shifts and get paid less than our minimum wage Can we say unfair trade practice People think about it If your an American we should all think about buying American Thats what has made this country strong.....

Mr. Watson is right-on. The over-sized, over-powered "American" NAFTA-mobiles (complete with Mexican Engines and Japanese electronics) are a big reason we're all having to pay so much for gas. I do feel sorry, though, for the many assembly-line workers who've done their best. In the end, bad Management decisions are what have taken Ford and GM to the edge. In the end, Uncle Sam will undoubtedly bail them out.

Where in hell has "Bruce Watson" been? The so-called "latest" quality problem cited occurred in 2000 - 8 years ago! Watson has completely missed the latest J.D. Power survey, which stated that Ford Vehicle quality was virtually the same as Toyota's - the typical customer could not tell the difference between the two brands! And the fuel economy of comparable models is indeed - comparable. Coming up at Ford is a series of new powertrains that are as good as - if not better - than the competition (eco-boost). In other words: this article is nowhere near the reality of the models built by Ford domestically - or internationaly - for that matter.

Whoever wrote this piece is a total and absolute moron. Abviously biased as hell over anything that carries the 'made in America' tag this dumb-ass doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. I have owned Toyotas and Nissans and they are good cars while they are running but the upkeep and parts prices are absolute sheer robbery. They are NOT as reliable as GM or Ford products and and anyone who owns one knows only too well how much their repair costs are and how you have to kiss them goodnight and tuck them in so they will start in the morning. This writer probably hasn't owned a GM or Ford product in years and its obvious he hasn't a damn CLUE about what he is writing about. Why anyone would publish this s*** is beyond me.

I have driven 5 different Ford taurus for 20 years and have had no problems. And today they are better than ever according to J.D. powers. I don't know why this guy Bruce Watson would be so unpatriotic and speak against American companys and lift up Foreign car companys whose only intrest is to take Americas money for their country. Wake up Bruce while there is still time for America.

Mr. Watson sure seems to be living in the past and lacks understanding! GM had and still leads in major techincal advances that major auto makers use all over the world. Many GM cars are better than Toyota & Honda. My Bonneville that I now drive is comfortable, drives great, gets 34mpg on the highway and has been bullit proof! Had an older Bonneville that I drove for 14 years by choice, and it's still on the road, loved the car!

How can AOL allow such behind the time information be published as beneficial reading. Allowed the US automotive makers are pretty poor business men in that how can you have 80 to 250 million in revenue and consisantly lose money.

Dave, it wasn't the tires that caused Explorer problems, it was the suspension of the Explorer. Those Firestone tires were fine with every other vehicle except the Explorer! What was it you said, "DUH"
