Since Friday's surprise announcement that John McCain picked Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his VP, numerous unpleasant facts have emerged which may make McCain regret his hasty choice. And since she has not been officially nominated by the Republican convention, it's not too late for McCain to pick Karl Rove favorite Mitt Romney instead.
Here are some of the reasons that McCain should reconsider his decision:
-
Hearbeat away. She has had very little experience governing and none with foreign policy. This would be fine if McCain was in robust good health. Unfortunately, that is not the case. She could actually become President and it is far from obvious that she has the most executive experience among all the potential VP candidates that might need to step in if McCain could no longer do the President's job.
-
No longer a shoe-in for Evangelical vote. She was strongly supported by the Evangelical wing of the Republican party due to her religious beliefs and her decision to keep her fifth child after she learned it would have Down syndrome. But with her 17-year old daughter having a child, some might question how strongly Palin believes in abstention until marriage.
-
Corruption concerns. It is not clear whether McCain knew that Palin was under investigation for firing a public safety commissioner who refused to fire her brother-in-law. And did he know that she denied involvement with lobbyists in an interview with Maria Bartiromo, even though a TransCanada lobbyist played a central role in getting a $500 million subsidy for that Canadian company to build a gas pipeline she was pushing?
-
Science skeptic. Today I heard a radio interview on NPR with a woman who had been undecided between Obama and McCain. She opted for Obama because she cannot stomach the idea of voting for Palin due to her skepticism about global warming and her belief in creationism. As the daughter of a Republican civil engineer, Palin's skepticism about science cost McCain this woman's vote and that of her father.
In this election, vice presidents matter. And McCain's hasty choice tells us something scary about how he makes important decisions. Does he have the temperament to lead America? Will he dig in his heels and defend Palin against a building wave of trouble? Or will he quietly accept her resignation and move on?
Update. The New York Times reports new details that raise more questions about Palin. Palin was one month pregnant when she got married in 1988 -- her 17-year old daughter is five months pregnant and it was announced that she plans to marry the father, Levi Johnston. Meanwhile, the Times reports that Palin's husband was arrested in 1986 for drunk driving.

No one will top the Clintons' long history of scandal and corruption, and it didn't get Cigar Willy thrown out.

Jeff, 29 people associated with the Reagan
White House (Wed Tech/Iran Contra) were indicted. Remember when Bush 41 had to pardon everyone, Casper Weinberger, etc. in 1989? Didn't think so. How many people were indicted in the Clinton White House? Are you ready? 0. Cisneros was fined for lying about payments to a mistress before he took office as Transportation Secretary and somebody at Interior got in trouble for accepting some tickets to a football game. Of course, Clinton was impeached by the House for lying under oath about having consensual sex with an adult while in the course of an investigation of White Water which went absolutely nowhere which is exactly why Ken Starr asked him about Lewinsky. The Dow tripled under Clinton and our deficit actually began to recede and we ran a surplus. Oh, those were the days.
Palin should be dropped. Her speech was really a zinger fest with a touch of adulation for McCain thrown in and it did little to tell us how she'd govern. Do you remember the 1000 Points of Light Program that honored people that did the work like Obama did as a community organizer? Palin owes him an apology. I wonder how many black friends Palin has?
And I can't believe she mentioned the "Bridge to Nowhere" because she was for it and yet when it wasn't built she still took the money. McCain initially opposed the Bush tax cuts but then voted to continue them because allowing them to expire, constituted in his mind, a tax increase. Oh, he forgot to mention that the increase would've been on his wife.

Hi,
Although I'm Dutch I am following developments concerning your elections with great interest. To most of the Dutch people American voters are very conservative and we can relate more to Obama's ideas than those of McCain. Especially McCain's choice for Palin seems a very bad choice to me (anti aborttion, hunting, no experience, too much Christian insanity). I wish you get the best president for the coming years, and I think that would be Obama.

I keep coming back to the idea that people will imitate the president and v.p. Both Obama and Biden are good husbands and fathers. Women will be better off if men imitate Obama and Biden.
If we have a rash of teen pregnancies and early marriages, and large families become fashionable again, there will be problems down the road. The U.S. can't tell other countries to control population growth if we have a Pres/VP with 5 kids. I was upset to hear that McCain walked out on his first wife when she became disabled and left her for a 23 year old heiress. If other men trade in their wives for younger/healthier/richer wives, where will women be?

Hell no! Why should he replace her? She is a lying, secretive, religious right-winged zealot who believes in creationism. She is the PERFECT Republican candidate to give us 4 more wonderful years of George Bush!

The post should be retitled, "McCain Should've Let Palin Go." In addition to all the other bs her foreign travels have been tallied to include Kuwait, Germany, Ireland, and Iraq. The problem is that the trip to Ireland was a fuel stop, probably Shannon, where she didn't leave the plane and the trip to Iraq has been revealed to be a bit of hyperbole. So here's the count: Canada, Mexico, Kuwait, Germany and of course that island from which she keeps watch over the evil empire. Strike Iraq and Ireland from the list. Putin is shaking in his boots. As I've told my white friends, if you cannot give me a compelling reason for why you're not voting for Obama I know the real reason.
On the upside if McCain and the Whiter Shade of Palin win, invest in all of those stocks, RIG, HAL, XOM, that have done so well in the past couple of years. And if you can't afford food, eat the rich.

All the negitive press on Palin is going to backfire and people like me who weren't going to vote for John McCain are so pissed at what the media is doing to Palin that I'm voting for her just to spite the slanted bias liberal media and all the so called stars like Matt Damen. We are so sick of the liberal media and Hollywood speaking for us middle Americans. Who put them in charge of our country? Just stop! Obama will lose because we are tired of the Palin slander. Mark my words!

What is the big deal about Bristol Palin and her pregnancy? Obama's mother had him out-of-wedlock also. His father impregnated many women, so what's the big deal with Bristol. At least her baby's father is not a fly-by-night like Obama's was.
Lay off of Bristol. Really, Obama, it is not helping you. You are losing votes by doing this.
All the way McCain & Palin!!!
