With designers like Isaac Mizrahi, Target (NYSE: TGT) has done the unthinkable: establish itself as a big box discounter that's also a place you can shop for clothing without feeling ashamed. Now the company is taking it to the next level with plans to open four "Bullseye Bodega" stores in Manhattan on September 12th, timed to coincide with the end of fashion week. While a few boutique stores certainly won't add materially to the company's sales, that's not reall the point: for a cost that's tiny for a company of Target's size, the company is generating priceless publicity, and strengthening its brand as a leading clothier for the fasionable but budget-conscious. The fact that The New York Times did a story on the new stores speaks to the value of the plan.
Target's stock has taken a beating of late, as its increasingly upscale product mix hasn't fared as well in the current environment as Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT). But when the economic tide turns -- as it always does -- Target should be well-poised to capitalize.
Super-investor William Ackman has a considerable paper-loss on his huge investment in Target, but he recently prepared funds to buy more. Investors may do quite well following him.

Target is an AMERICAN owned company. It was started in Minnesota and the corporate offices are still in Minnesota. Any of you who believe that they don't donate money check out snopes, they will tell you that they are NOT owned by the French and they donated millions weekly.

Wow! Is that urban legend still out there that Target is owned by the French! Listen to Target Shopper, Target is based in Minnesota.....but you know those people from Minnesota, sometimes they act a little frenchie. A little too close to Canada. I think we should beef up the border patrols there. Somebody call Bush!

I love Target, but most of the clothes I've bought there for adults, do not hold up at all. A lot of fading, fraying, and shrinking.

I love "Tar-jay". I drop a lot of dollars there a couple of times a week. What a thrill it will be to visit their clothing stores in the Big Apple. Target "gets it" when it comes to quality and merchandising at fair prices. I would never shop Wal-mart as they decimate entire communities by selling inferior crap and paying their employees inferior wages, refusing to pay their healthcare costs, and discriminating against women and minorities. Go Target, go!!

Musicerfan, you are insane! Target has average sizes, plus size and maternity clothing. Something to fit all sizes. I am a size 4 and find the cutest, well fitting clothing at Target at reasonable prices.

I agree with Juana I don`t shop at target especially after they believe a african american who lied to get a white guy fired so he couldn`t get promoted like the african american. The aa would break all the policies & the guy who is the head boss of the asset protection who would follow a employee of target at the local mall & be denial of even being at the mall even after being caught on tape. The white guy was one of the best workers & who would come in on his day off to push buggies into the store for 12 hrs.You know target`s saying pay less get more,it just the opposite you pay more for less. You get alot more for your $$$$ at Wal-mart.Walmart pays their employees more.

I've always enjoyed going to Target and have never liked going to Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has poor service and whenever I walk in there I feel as if they are slopping hogs. The produce isn't any good and guess what? The prices aren't that cheap either. I've shopped at Target and found lots of the same things are less expensive at there. I don't shop at Wal-Mart anymore, no service, inferior products and bad food in this economy isn't a good deal.

It would be nice if they carried tall sizes too. Until then I will continue to get shirts, skirts, bathing suits, and just about anything else but jeans there. It's great everyday wear for a broke college student. Cheap but still looks good.

Target is the only big box store that gives back to the community. I find a lot of products at the Goodwill which in return supports the job market and the low income families. Its the only place I find quality vs quantity. I still shop wally world but target has products you can't find there. The clothing has gotten better even for plus sized girls like me who want fashion vs carbon copy clothing made in china. I enjoy finding great clearance prices on end of season merchandise and especially home fashions. I am am hopefull target will start a plus size clothing store for all of us beautiful plus size guys and gals.

It is true that Target does not support local charity drives but they give millions for education. They also give America a price break on normally out of reach style. So its give and take. If you think about it Target not only saves American's money but also gives our dollar more spending power. I can spend less and get more bang for my buck than at any designer boutique.

I love Target (especially when there is a Starbucks inside!)
They donate around 1million dollars to charities each week...
Walmart sells around 90% of goods that come from China-not good. I am sure Target sells a large amount of items from China as well but Target is at least a classier place to shop and the prices are actually similar to Walmart-plus they have a larger selection and higher quality items.

Also, Alex, what do you expect larger folks to wear? Plastic bags? Our money is just as green as anyone else's and we deserve to wear nice clothes, even if narrow minded bigots like you don't need them. If you don't like them, stay out of that department, for goodness sake. Grow up.
