Mars Inc., has made not just one, but two ad campaigns for its popular Snickers bar seem to sneer at gays. Mars, one of the biggest privately held, family-owned companies, makes many of the world's most popular candies: Snickers, M&Ms, Twix, Starburst (along with Uncle Ben's Rice and pet food like Whiskas), but both of the ads gay rights groups found offensive were for the Snickers bar.
The first gay-themed Snickers ad made a big splash in Super Bowl XLI in 2007. Two mechanics get so wrapped up in eating the opposite ends of Snickers bar that their lips touch, prompting them to decide to "do something manly" lest they accidentally catch gayness -- so they pull their chest hair out.
The commercial not only offended gay rights groups, such as the Human Rights Campaign, but also was widely discussed and mocked as idiotic. Comedian Jon Stewart noted the online alternative endings -- in which the men pummel each other -- were even worse. Mars didn't apologize, but pulled the ad -- while noting that it had been popular with the football audience.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Matthew Shepard Foundation found those endings even more offensive. "This campaign encourages the same type of hate that led to the death of my son Matthew. It essentially gives 'permission' to our society to verbally or physically harass individuals who are gay, lesbian or bisexual," said Judy Shepard, the executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and the mother of Matthew Shepherd, who was targeted for being gay and tortured and left to die on a Wyoming fence in 1998.
The Human Rights Campaign says it began a "constructive dialog with Mars on workplace inclusion for GLBT employees" after the gay Superbowl ad. They seemed to think the company was making some progress. Then a new ad showed up in England in 2008 showing Mr. T shooting Snickers bars at an effeminate speed walker, calling him "a disgrace to the man race" and ending with the tag line "get some nuts." The Human Rights Campaign said they were surprised at the company's regression, but applauded it for pulling the ad.

I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be making fun of homophobic men, not gay men.

first of all, to complain is to imply that the word "manly" means "positive" or "good" in the first place, which the video has no stance on whatsoever, the video portrays two straights acting out a scenario as straight characters, it could have easily been "cavemen," cheerleaders, women, or even gays, with each of them doing something not accepted in their social group, then say quick lets do somethign cavemen-ish, cheerleader-ish etc, it could be even negative depending on the way you view it, I think this time its the protestors who are looking to cause trouble, not the advertisers in my opinion.

As a member of the GLBT community, I don't find the ad in the least offensive. As Deirdre said, it was making fun of the stupidity of homophobic men and should not be in anyway construed as being offensive to gay individuals. I actually found it to be quite amusing, especially compared to the nonsensical, crack-headed commercials on TV today.
I am almost ashamed to be a part of a community that seems to be made up entirely of wet blankets. Lighten up people, and please remember that it isn't always about you.

u gota be fraking kiddingme, isnt it pro gay enouhg tht it showed two guys kissing?????? Gay people no offense but come ON! same way straight people don't want to turn gay, gay people don't wanna do striaght things. So what in the heck is wrong with this commercial??? tThe majority of people if tey would do something so braindead and stupid as this they would do the same thing "something manly" this commercial is not toward gay people at all. In my opinion it's offensive and disgusting to show two guys kissing on a national tv commercial.

Satire is difficult, as some people will just not get it and take offense.

If it's satire, it's not good satire. The only thing offensive about it is that it's utterly stupid.

I have to agree with you, mrk, I was not offended by this ad, it was just stupid. I failed to see the connection between the kiss, chest hair removal and the slogan "most satisfying"

GLBT member here too, and I thought both of those ads were damned funny as hell. The Snickers ad makes more fun of the stupidity of homophobes, and the Mr. T ad had nothing to do with gay people at all. Speedwalking isn't "manly" and just makes you look like a queer in how you have to pose your body, but then so does wrestling and bowling - two "very manly" sports.

If this were meant as satire and not anti-gay, how about it was the other way around, the mechanics wiggling their eyebrows at each other and "snicker"ing, or the goofy walker shooting snickers at Mr. T?
How would people feel about it then?
Judy Shepard has a far deeper and thoughtful view on these types of ads than most of us unthreatened cuoch potatoes. And why the hell is violence supposed to be entertaining?

Gays are so funny. Silly rump rangers. If they wouldn't act so silly, people wouldn't hate them, right? What a crock of shit. The commercials are stupid, people hate them. No redneck mechanic, because I know a few, would grab a candy bar in his mouth like that and start eating, it's stupid. They'd just rip it out of the guy's mouth. The Mr. T spot is hilarious! He's in a combat vehicle with a mini gun, HA! Then he's in a tank, FUNNY! God, freaking gays should just go live on a damn island somewhere and shut the hell up and quit ruining everyone's life!

as a past mechanic... I am offended that they are implying that we can't afford two candy bars! ha! ha! so everytime a straight guy overcompensates to prove he is not gay it is offensive. using that logic every time a homosexual person acts extreamly "butch" or "flamin" to overcompensate their own born gender, I should be offended. I am friends and co-workers with a gay young woman named marissa. she calls herself butch. She acts more "manly" and more of a shovinistic pig than the other 400 bluecollared guy's we work with. It doesn't offend me it makes me laugh. I will admit that guy's that are "flamin" can get on my nerves. Not that they are gay but because of thier behavior. If a staight female acted that way I would get just as irritated.
I don't agree with "gay bashing" everyone has a right to happiness. as set in our laws. I don't agree with the other extream activist that take offense to everything. I wonder how much money Matt Shepard's mother has made being a spokeswoman after that horrible and tragic act's of that day where done. there is an old saying that there is money in war. that would inculde civil act's. such as "war aginst anti-gay things" Lawsuit aginst companies that have anything to do with "anti-gay" liberates millions of dollars and where does that all go? I bet those rightious organizers and spokespeople get paid to yell hate!! at any possible thing the find offensive. But yet as a straight guy I am supposed to take the sterotypes reversed at us like "Queer eye for the straight guy" saying that homosexual men know how to dress better. Tommy Hill, Calvin Kline and Ralph Lauren aren't all gay???
If it is a direct gaybashing I would disapprove as well. but stop overexamineing everything.

If you are worried you will turn gay from watching two men kiss Mike, you've got issues. Watching two men kiss isn't going to turn me gay but I honestly am not affected by it either way. I don't care if people are gay or not, it's their business. Why do people want to meddle in the lives of others so much?
