At the start of the 20th century, two companies that would go on to dominate American industry were locked in a battle over which type of electrical current the country would embrace. The direct current (DC) champion in this War of the Currents was Thomas Edison and his company, General Electric (NYSE: GE), while Westinghouse, now part of CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS), pushed AC, alternating current, made commercially viable by Nikola Tesla.
To make his case that DC was safer than AC current, Edison conducted a number of public exhibitions in which he
"Westinghoused" -- his term for electrocuted -- cats, dogs, and cows using AC. He also had constructed the first electric chair for New York, which was used in 1890 to attempt the execution of William Kemmler. Unfortunately, those in charge underestimated the current needed, resulting in what was described as a horrifying display of cruelty, leaving Kemmler alive but badly hurt.
Undisuaded, Edison continued his campaign of Westinghousing all sorts of mammals. Meanwhile, Coney Island's Luna Park was puzzling over what to do with its elephant Topsy, who had killed three of her handlers in three years (one of whom had been trying to feed her a lit cigarette). When the ASPCA stepped in to protest plans to hang the animal, the owners struck on the idea of electrocuting Topsy. Edison made sure cameras were on hand to capture the tragic event on January 4, 1903 as 6,600 volts of AC dropped her in her tracks He released the film under the title Electrocuting an Elephant.
Times and sensibilities have changed since then, and many will look upon this as an act of wanton cruelty. Edison would soon lose his war, as the many advantages of AC current became obvious. I hope that Topsy's death in some small way helped to thwart the ambitions of the heartless Edison.

I love how everyone is so offended they killed the elephant after it rampaged and killed three human beings. The problem with animal rights activists and sensitive animal-loving losers alike is that they don't put as much of a value on human life as they do on animal life. Since when did animals become more important than human beings? Fuck you PETA, and for the record, I LOL'ed at this.

so the third handler got the elephant to kill him by feeding it a lit cigarette. What did the other two do to the elephant to enrage it? I think the third handler needs the Darwin award. Why would he be so stupid as to enrage an elephant that has already killed two handlers? As to the death of the elephant, the park owner wanted something sensational to get in the news and get publicity. Just shooting the elephant wouldn't do he wanted to hang it. But even better, electrocution, the latest science of the day. Filming it was incredibly sick by our standards, but the majority didn't think that way then. Evidently after seeing it though a lot of people changed their minds on the subject and quit supporting Edison. As a result Westinghouse took over the market.

China has an enormous dog butchering industry that makes this look like humane dispatch.
Take it how you will.

All of those liberals and PETA people who have responded saying this story makes them sick and angry, may I remind you that this took place over a century ago, when humans who were not white, male, and Protestant were treated as second-class citizens, kids beaten until they had bruises was acceptable, and polluting our skies and water until they were poisoned was considered "progress", among things. You are judging a man who lived a century ago by one act that many considered acceptable. May I also remind you that Thomas Edison's GE company, like other companies at the time, employed African-Americans only in menial positions, which you find unpalatable. You're no different than those lawyers who want to sue the descendants of slaveowners for reparations, despite slavery ending over 140 years ago. We are to learn from history, not to judge it.

This is what happens when sick MEN want to make a point. Edison KNEW FULL WELL what was going on!!!!!! Thank GOD for ASPCA, but again due to the males who have a "God Complex" it was too late for Topsy. Edison just decided it was good for his image, and didn't even listen to people who knew that AC was better!

Trent,
You're just a sad, small-minded man who's probably compensating with your misdirected anger at the fact that you are small in other ways as well.
I LOL when I think about how pitiful you are....

The way society treats its animals is indicative of the emotional health of that society... that being said, those of you who condone this horrific senseless killing are exactly why this country's so screwed up. That and the fact that none of you ultra-right conservatives who have posted here know how to construct a complete, grammatically correct sentence.
Uneducated, backwards and inbred, you supposed rightwing 'Christians' (and I use that term loosely) need a refresher course in what it means to believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, who would never have supported such cruelty willingly bestowed on another living thing.
Think about it before you open that nasty pie-hole next time.

Doug...do you really think ABC, FOX, CBS, etc. were even AROUND back then? Seriously????
"Topsy, who had killed three of her handlers in three years (one of whom had been trying to feed her a lit cigarette)."
Topsy had been abused, so there is NO excuse to kill her after she goes through such a thing....not in that way.

Let's see if I got this straight. Topsy the elephant had to kill THREE handlers before they decided she was dangerous? I am surprised she wasn't shot after the first handler was killed. Electrocuting the elephant was probably less painful than being shot many times until dead.
