Bloggers weren't kind to Nike's campaign for its Hyperdunk basketball shoes in late July. Three printed ads produced by Wieden+Kennedy were blamed as fostering anti-gay messages.
Most of the ads depicted one basketball player dunking over another in vaguely homo-erotic positions (mostly with one player's face in the other's crotch) with 'trash talk'-type slogans such as "Punks Jump Up," "Say Hello," "That Ain't Right." The hot-button line was from a popular 1992 rap song, "Punks Jump Up to get Beat Down," by Brand Nubian. The song was a good theme for basketball courts but for one thing; its lyrics, which advocated violence against homosexuals and featured the line, "I ain't down with gays."
At first, Nike supported the ad campaign. But when bloggers took the shoe giant to task for its "ethical sloppiness," Nike and its ad agency backed off and decided to withdraw the ads "to underline our ongoing commitment to supporting diversity in sport and the workplace."
Nike's move coincided with an ad-industry-wide debate about the use of gay stereotypes. Mars, Inc. also pulled an ad during the same week based on its criticism from national homosexual groups.

I wonder if the Nike ad designers were aware of a new gay television series premiering on LOGOTV called "Shirts & Skins" which is about Gay Basketball players!! (who look just like the players in Nike's ads) The choice of slogans is NOT supportive of the message that there are gay athletes in every sport and that while there have been an occassional sports star who comes out, this series is about to blow the good ole boys' sports world wide open...I think Nike knew exactly what it was doing!

Intentionally playing into the homophobia of some of the most close-minded demographics. Way to go Nike!

Are you serious? If you know anything about basketball you would know that on most courts if you get dunked on you get kicked off the court. I do not believe this was gay at all. This ad should not offend anyone unless you have been dunked on. What is wrong with the U.S.A. have we turned into France? Is that why we are so sensitive? Why must everything have to be taken in an offensive way? The U.S.A. has become so prude and it is so rediculous.

If any Nike ad should be deemed offensive, it is the one portraying the corporate puppet Tiger Woods walking on water. Now that IS offensive.

The term "punk" is a slang term in the African American community for gay. The use of a song that advocates violence against gays, along with that term and phrases like "that ain't right" all add up to an anti-gay message. How the marketing teams and Nike itself managed to not see this before allowing it to air is a little disturbing. Either they are completely oblivious to their own inner homophobia or they felt that the viewers -- including gays -- would be oblivious to the message. Way to go, Nike.

Why does Nike need to advertise when their logo is on most everything athletes wear. They should pay them as should companies who sell their products with name or logo on it to consumers. Free ads that bring in money. Why should we pay to advertise a product?

I havn't actually seen the ad and I would like to. So that I can fully formulate my own oppinion. But based on the facts listed and the picture im pretty sure that I have an accurate idea. So I say that Nike should piss off... I like there shoes but maybe I should find a new supplier because although I am straight I have friends (guy and girl) that have all sexual preferances and I LOVE all of my friends and honestly im not ok with people that are prejudice agianst them so Nike I dont think that I'll be buying any more shoes from you. You've just lost a customer and You can be sure you've lost my freinds too CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!!! (sorry about my spelling)

You will definitely GET my business if you stand for what is right. The real phobia is with those who are afraid to believe in God. Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve were created for each other regardless of what went wrong in your upbringing. If you cannot even see the anatomically correct setup then you are certainly blinded by this silly smokescreen that shall be blown away when you stand before Jesus Christ.

Hey Dan... The French would never be complaining about advertising like we are here. They show nipples on TV without everyone marching in the streets. Ohh yeah, they also stand up against us when we decide we want to invade countries without cause or reason.
Looks like we could learn a lesson from those whinning French people.
