Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who has made the economy a focal point in his campaign, is slipping in the polls as the popularity of opponent John McCain surged after his selection of the Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running-mate.Now Obama and his supporters are hoping that their support for a second economic stimulus -- worth about $50 billion -- will grab the attention of voters fascinated by Palin, the moose-hunting hockey mom conservative firebrand. That's going to be a challenge.
Voters now are focused on Palin. They are gobbling up every detail about her life -- The Bridge to Nowhere (which she actually supported for a while), her baby with Down's Syndrome, her pregnant teenage daughter, whether she wanted to ban books from the local library. The list is endless. The McCain campaign is fueling interest in "Sarah Barracuda" by keeping her away from the media. This week, Palin is supposed to sit down with Charlie Gibson of ABC News. More interviews will follow though apparently not with Oprah Winfrey.
Democrats, including this one, are betting that once Palin is no longer the flavor of the week voters will move onto more pressing issues such as the economy (and, of course, "American Idol"). The economy is in terrible shape. The federal budget deficit is soaring and unemployment is at record levels. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers endorsed the second stimulus plan today in testimony before Congress.
I am still not convinced.
For one thing, how do we know it will be any more useful than the first one? Many people I know used the government's largess to pay down bills. Mine went to pay estimated taxes. Will the $50 billion really "stimulate" the economy or give it a tickle? If you do a second stimulus, will you need a third or a fourth?
A stimulus is a short-term solution at best. But considering how awful things are, it may be the only way to provide relief to millions of suffering Americans.

Oh, and the Republicans are looking out for you... riiiight. Makes me wonder why big corporations and the ultra-wealthy are almost exclusively in the Republican tent.
Ummmmm...Mike, how many of the Hollywood ultra-wealty are you counting in that number? Seems to me they're all huddled in the Dems camp - just like their pop culture icon candidate.

Anyone running for any office who supports another stimulus check will not get my vote. It did nothing to improve the economy it just put the country in more debt. Start looking for other ways to cut gov. spending and lower taxes and fuel. For a lot less money the gov. could have suspended the with-holding income tax for one week and it would have saved the cost of mailing us a letter saying we were getting it and another letter telling us we were getting it or suspend the gas tax for a week. Bet I could come up with some more ideas if I took the time!!! but why bother our gov. doesn't listen to the people.

Wow. The Republicans are up in arms because the Dems might issue a stimulus rebate? Bribing people for their votes? That couldn't happen in America. In fact, it's not happened since 2001 when Bushie sent everyone $400 as a thank you for electing him. Of course, he's more than used up that favor with his lies and war for oil.

All this time I thought it was illegal to buy votes. And to think it only takes fifty billion dollars to buy the White House.

wow! If people lived within their means instead of always thinking they need more stuff, or they need nicer things they wouldn't be in personla debt. I think change starts from the bottom....not the top. People have to be willing to change not accepting handouts and feeling entitled! LAZY LAZY LAZY!

So lets try and be informed.
1) The President has very little influence on the ecconomy at large...ask any professional ecconomist.
2) Both Sen. McCain's AND Sen. Obama's ecconomic plans with extend the debt by trillions of dollars.
3) Sen. Obama is not going to cut taxes for 95% of Americans.
Please, everyone use factcheck.org and get NON-PARTISAN info there instead of just lapping up whatever your favored party or canidate says. Do your own research and be an informed voter, not an influenced voter.

I say, let's give Obama a chance. Trust me, it won't be as bad as the others who have come before him. Whoever gets chosen, they will have one hell of a 'clean up' to do.

For a congress that has touted 'Bush failed policies' for 2 years, it stuns me to think, they want to use the same policies, at election time, as something good that they want credit for. It's nothing more than a media ploy like the impeachment hearings.....for an election.

I feel that McCain patronized us by selecting a "young" woman. I understand that Obama countered his lack of experience with an experienced VP, and I fully expected McCain to pick someone younger.....but I don't feel his choice of a woman was sincere. It was strategy, and I hope it doesn't work.

I have to laugh every time I hear someone
talk about the Republicans spending all this money in Congress. The Democrats
were complicit in all this spending. They
just don't get the blame for it.
By the way, where have all the Democrats
been for the last two years when they had
total control of Congress?

If I pay $10,000.00 in taxes and get a 2% tax cut, I get A $200.00 cut, and if I pay $100,000.00 in taxes and get a 2% tax cut i get $2,000.00 cut Why is that not fair? Sure I get more money, but I also pay more, the tax cuts are for the rich, that is only a democrat talking point, with no merrit.

This is one voter not focused on Palin. She represents herself not American Mothers. If she were any minority and tried to run with the problems she has people would laugh her off the stage. She is in no position to preach to the choir.
