Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who has made the economy a focal point in his campaign, is slipping in the polls as the popularity of opponent John McCain surged after his selection of the Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running-mate.Now Obama and his supporters are hoping that their support for a second economic stimulus -- worth about $50 billion -- will grab the attention of voters fascinated by Palin, the moose-hunting hockey mom conservative firebrand. That's going to be a challenge.
Voters now are focused on Palin. They are gobbling up every detail about her life -- The Bridge to Nowhere (which she actually supported for a while), her baby with Down's Syndrome, her pregnant teenage daughter, whether she wanted to ban books from the local library. The list is endless. The McCain campaign is fueling interest in "Sarah Barracuda" by keeping her away from the media. This week, Palin is supposed to sit down with Charlie Gibson of ABC News. More interviews will follow though apparently not with Oprah Winfrey.
Democrats, including this one, are betting that once Palin is no longer the flavor of the week voters will move onto more pressing issues such as the economy (and, of course, "American Idol"). The economy is in terrible shape. The federal budget deficit is soaring and unemployment is at record levels. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers endorsed the second stimulus plan today in testimony before Congress.
I am still not convinced.
For one thing, how do we know it will be any more useful than the first one? Many people I know used the government's largess to pay down bills. Mine went to pay estimated taxes. Will the $50 billion really "stimulate" the economy or give it a tickle? If you do a second stimulus, will you need a third or a fourth?
A stimulus is a short-term solution at best. But considering how awful things are, it may be the only way to provide relief to millions of suffering Americans.

Is this one of the carrots or one of the sticks Obama spoke of, about the American citizens?

I am going to say this..I really feel people should give Obama a chance. As for all of you who are bashing him before he even gets in the door, apparently haven't been living the same U.S of A I have been in for the past few years Bush has been in office. This guy has gotten us in soo much debt, trouble and turmoil that do we honestly think McCain will attempt to make it better for us poor "Middle class" families? I think not! Maybe a Democrat is definitely needed in the office to clean up the dumb ass's mess. But regarding stimulus checks, no one complained when Bush did it, instead everyone was running to the bank with their checks in hand ready to cash in on the deal. Our economy is suffering and all we can think about is Dysfunctional Sarah Palin and woohooo she's a woman...Big friggin deal!

I just don't understand this another check? Are we not so deep in debt already? Where are we getting this money..oh yes, we will pay with higher taxes and everything else. Unreal, as far as I am concerned we are totally screwed as a Nation and it doesn't matter who gets in they will never get this country back. The Fed should be abolished they are printing money like water so exactly who owns the US? God help us!

In this time of corporate greed, Why hasn't anyone asked about the TRILLIONS of dollars in Off Shore Accounts!
I believe the USA should INSIST on opening these accounts that are illegal and hiding TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to evade US taxes.
We should be able to look at these accounts and seize that money to be able to put that money back into the US economy!
I bet there will be accounts from the highest US elected officials, judges, senate and congress and also most of these corporate SEO's that have Raped our US Finance system!
This would ease the burden on the middle class tax payers!

Sure in the heck hope not!! a commander in chief is suppose to be about more than just the economy...
As for a second stimulus package, why? the first one didn't benefit many of us because our income didn't qualify as EARNED income..funny though that income still qualified me to pay taxes on it...
most people I know got $300, at least 50% of them used it to pay a late bill like their electric bill that has sky rocketed in the last year or so, the others used it to pay for the higher gas prices back when they got it... they want to help us, lower taxes on things..lower the gas tax, that alone will save more than $300 in the long run per individual that have no choice but to fill up every three days so they can go to work!! heck lower the darn income tax rate, halfing it alone would save me more than $500 a month..I'll gladly use that 500 to perk up the economy every month!!
I like how they say that things might get bad at the begining of the year, yet our state raised their sales tax, raised the gas tax, and other taxes..thank goodness they raised the cigarette tax so high though cause all this screwing the people chit is enough to make one wanna smoke again!!!
just recalled Obama doesn't like walmart..he needs to realize that walmart/sams club is the only reason why many in our situation can still afford to eat...oh wait he said we americans should eat less didn't he??

What's funny is that most people are blaming the failure of the wall street or the economy on Bush. Not thinking that it's everybody's fault. First and foremost, we buy things that are made in China because it's cheap not thinking about the safety and quality. This kind of habit spending help the local economy or the local manufacturer to closed their factories because they can't compete with the cost of labor from countries like China. Many people should start thinking their spending habit before putting the blame on somebody. Secondly, the recent fall out of wall street is because they're people who are buying houses beyond their reach and when they make a default payment they will blame it on the goverment to justify their wrong judgement. Third, stop using credit card when you're lack of funds to avoid default. You're just making the bank or the credit company richer and then you'll eventually put them on the blame. (Behave people, think before spending) Lastly, most people think that when Obama get elected as President, their problems will be solve. This thinking is dead wrong. Think wisely before you vote and ask yourself and be honest with yourself if you are wise enough to make a better judgement. There's no finger pointing for your actions always reflects on the outcome of your choice. Simple don't spent when you can't and spend when you have and save while you can. BTW I will vote for McCain and Palin, the answer is simple, they can be trusted and I can't trust Obama, he has too much baggage to carry. Chao!!!!!!

The stimulus package that Obama will proposed will not help the economy. The answer is simple how could you receive a tax break when you're not paying tax. It's up to us people! It's up to the American people whether we are willing to change our spending habit and lived beyond our means.
Don't be fool and dreamy, be practical and wise enough.

Lori- Your post #18, is well written and i agree with you on the fact that under McCain's plan, there would be no middle class.. you either make $250,000 annually, or you are in the poor house.
