The large hedge fund run by Texas energy king T. Boone Pickens has lost $1 billion this year. He bet that oil would go up. Instead, it went down. That makes his push for wind power and the use of natural gas to run cars look a little silly.
According to The Wall Street Journal," the downturn in energy has blindsided the industry veteran, leaving one of his hedge funds that focuses on energy stocks down almost 30% through August." Pickens says that oil will move back up unless the global economy goes into a very deep recession.
The loss make Pickens look like a fool. He has been lobbying both in Congress and in public that high oil prices are killing the U.S. economy. The U.S., he says, needs to move its energy consumption to natural gas and wind energy. His big push is to cut America's dependence on foreign oil.
His plan relies on converting the auto industry's manufacturing process to one that builds cars that use natural gas. The industry is moving toward electric power. He also wants to set up windmill farms all over the U.S. How these will connect into the current electricity power grid still has to be worked out. In other words, it may not work at all.
If oil prices keep going down, oil may still be the least expensive way to power cars and industry. The huge cost of turning the nation's infrastructure to operating on other energy sources is simply too great. And Pickens is losing his credibility as an energy expert if he can't even forecast the price of crude.

McIntyre, you are either a total a..hole or you have an angle that is obscure. Boone is an American patriot. You are a Liberal jerk. Oil can go to $5.00 a barrel. We are still sending our money to a hostile nation or nations that want to destroy us. You make me freakin sick!

Did you know we have 3 times the oil of Saudi Arabia in oil shale alone on our west coast. So what if its a little more expensive to refine. At least the money stays in the U.S. Using this oil now, combined with the oil we know of in the mainland and Alaska, would buy us enough time to develop solar technology. Solar along with the existing technologies wind, hydro, natural gas, and nuclear would be all we needed.

Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question - Where did he get the money for this tr ip? Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? It's not cheap! to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia, he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000. a year. Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York.
By 'chance' he met Antoin 'Tony' Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria, and a real estate developer in Chicago. Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named 'Entrepreneur of the Decade' by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association'. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School. Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School? More student loans? After Law school, he went back to Chicago. Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented 'Rezar' which Rezko's firm. Rezko was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago. In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with 'seed money' for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwoood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans - Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko.
Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama's boss. She is now Obama's chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz, Iran! Do we see a pattern here? Or am I going crazy?
On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was 'sacked' after the press found out he was having regular contacts with 'Hamas', which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'.
Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that where born in Pakistan? They are in charge of all those 'small' Internet campaign contribution for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East?
And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on 'This Week' with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion said, 'My Muslim faith'. When questioned, 'he make a mistake'. Some mistake!
All of the above information I got on line. If you would like to check it - Wikipedia, encyclopedia, Barack Obama; Tony Rezko; Valerie Jarrett: Daily Times - Obama visited Pakistan in 1981; The Washington Times - September 7, 2008; The Times May 10, 2008.
Now the BIG question - If I found out all this information on my own, Why haven't all of our 'intelligent' members of the press been reporting this?

This article is completely off base and is possibly written by those that oppose his plan. His plan is sound and good. He started getting noticed by those that control energy pricing and the results are lower energy costs to make him look foolish. We are not stupid people and his idea should take flight against all those that oppose it.

To say that if oil prices continue to go down, it will be the least expensive way to fuel our economy is someone who simply does not get it.
After what we've been through the last year with oil, for anyone to hold the opinion that oil is still the best option in the table is, to be nice.....short-sighted.
If oil prices do continue to go down, we ought to look at it as a short term reprieve that will help us through what is going to be a tough transition. But, a transition that needs to go forward FULL SPEEN AHEAD.
From every possible angle you look at this problem, the long term answer is NOT oil.

I guess the author of the article would prefer us to continue throwing hard earned American dollars to build palaces for middle eastern oil barrons. I just don't get why folks don't see sending 700 billion dollars per year (and growing) out of this country when we could help put Americans back to work. The expenses to build infrastructure for alternative energy sources would be spent by us and go to us, through us, and for us. It will provide jobs and get us off foreign dependence on oil. 4 dollar gas is ruining this economy and will continue to ruin this economy. The tip of the iceberg is yet to be reached as far as inflation is concerned. These gas prices kill shipping freight prices on every consumable we purchase. People need to wake up. Lower income folks should not have their world turned upside down due to a hurricane or a cold winter in other parts of the country by having to worry about how to pay their bills. Energy cost hit the elderly and less fortunate the hardest. I applaud Boone for waking America up just as Ross Perot did 15 years ago.

anyone who thinks forecasting something of value is an easy job, is someone who has never placed a bet with their own real money on anthing.
step up to the sports betting window at any Nevada casino and put your money down. that is a courageous act that may not work out even if your research is fastidious.
betting on the future is not something which is to be ridiculed until you have tried it yourself. until then, your thoughts about it are less weighted.

Although I agree that nuclear power should be utilized, uranium prices can be manipulated just like oil prices. However, wind and solar power prices can never be manipulated, because it can never be depleted or limited in amount as caused by OPEC's quotas or big oil companies. Power plants could be concentrated away from hurricane damage in coastal areas and built to minimize damage from earthquakes or tornados. Current power grids could be easily utilized. T. Boone is a very wise man!

T Boone Pickens can afford this loss - I am sure it doesn't make him happy, but it won't kill him either. I still think his idea for renewal energy sources is fundamentally good. So, he lost some money on investments? So have we all this year!

Please somebody tell me if im being dumb but I feel that we should add $2.00 to every gallon of gas and spend it on alternative energy. I think it's the only way we will get energy independence is if gas stays high. if it goes back down we will go right back to how we were just 2 years ago.

Who's the dumb-ass that wrote this article. I don't see them trying to solve problems. Atleast Pickens is putting his beliefs, money, time & energy into a real salution. If you listen to what Pickens says, it not a quick fix. We still need oil in the short term.
I don't know about the rest of you but where I am... gas ain't getting cheaper.

If alternative energy plans could supply the energy needs of the world they would be in production world wide. The fact is they cannot and never will be able to compete. The only reason we have an economic problem is because of the high cost of energy. T. Boone was only interested in keeping his hedge plans afloat and his wife sold all her shares in his plan. Just like the Dems all he is interested in his and his fat-cat friends money atthe expense of the working man.

America produces about 7 million barrels of the 21 million it uses each day. 25% of that (from recent hurricane reports)--about 2 million-- comes from the Gulf. If we double the off shore drilling we then produce 9 million a day, still 11 million short of "energy independence." USGS predicts at best 1.5 million a day from ANWR. All the Drillbitters out there ars screaming for us to drill, drill, drill ourselves to Half Independence :-). And that in about 4 to six years it takes to develop the oil fields. If Pickins really was stupid, he'd be on the side of the Drillbitters.
