The large hedge fund run by Texas energy king T. Boone Pickens has lost $1 billion this year. He bet that oil would go up. Instead, it went down. That makes his push for wind power and the use of natural gas to run cars look a little silly.
According to The Wall Street Journal," the downturn in energy has blindsided the industry veteran, leaving one of his hedge funds that focuses on energy stocks down almost 30% through August." Pickens says that oil will move back up unless the global economy goes into a very deep recession.
The loss make Pickens look like a fool. He has been lobbying both in Congress and in public that high oil prices are killing the U.S. economy. The U.S., he says, needs to move its energy consumption to natural gas and wind energy. His big push is to cut America's dependence on foreign oil.
His plan relies on converting the auto industry's manufacturing process to one that builds cars that use natural gas. The industry is moving toward electric power. He also wants to set up windmill farms all over the U.S. How these will connect into the current electricity power grid still has to be worked out. In other words, it may not work at all.
If oil prices keep going down, oil may still be the least expensive way to power cars and industry. The huge cost of turning the nation's infrastructure to operating on other energy sources is simply too great. And Pickens is losing his credibility as an energy expert if he can't even forecast the price of crude.

How old are you? Your writing style coupled with your 'opinion' reminds me of all the 20 somethings out there running websites who are high on cheap easy smug cuteness and low on intellectual integrity and a broad, historically informed perspective. Your superficial understanding of this issue is sad; that you are 'in print' even worse? Who gave you the keys to the car when you can't see over the steering wheel.

What a crock, the guy is on the right track, but not going to arrive for at least another 20 years. For crying out loud, there is enough oil here in the USA to power the world for the next 40 years. Tap it idiots and get this economy back on track. Enough of us sending our money overseas and taking care of the rest of the world as well as making our Government more powerful and corrupt. All of you in Washington take note and drop your fat pork spending and take care of the people that put you into office in the first place.

TBone Pickins is no fool...he's gotten old, and apparently can no longer claim to be an "oil man" But, he still thinks he's smarter than the rest of us. He is a Billionaire...meaning he can afford to do anything he wants. If he thinks wind and natural gas is the way to go, he can do it on his own. His ads and lobbying for "our" support is a disingenuous attempt to position himself to receive taxpayer funding for his "alternative" energy initiatives... essentially using our money to fund his business venture. He is simply attempting to use the old adage of rich people getting rich (or more rich) by using other people's money.

The author is the one who looks like a fool. T. Boone is on target when he says the technology is not yet here for renewable alternative fuels. His suggestion that we drill and produce as much domestic oil as possible, switching much of our energy for transportation to natural gas while continuing to develop renewable sources of energy is the best idea that I have heard. Of course "green heads" are going to oppose his plan and any other plan where domestic drilling is involved.

Mr. McIntyre, you're the one that appears "a little silly". After reading your misguieded rhetoric one can only assume that you don't mind paying $4 a gallon for gas. You don't mind sending our dollars to those that hate us and use our money to do us harm. You don't mind continuing to polute the earth in the name of cheap fuel.
I can only come to one conclusion, you are as far left in your political beliefs as one can be. You are not interested in any solutions, just useless rhetoric. Thank you Mr. Pickens for stepping up!

T. Boone Pickens' knowledge of the oil / energy industry is vast. This is why people listen to his expertise. But his weakness is the same of every other economist: trying to predict the demand side of the supply/demand curve. He clearly knows the supply side. Whether this country goes into a recession or the dollar is further devalued --- the demand for energy (and oil) will continue upward. Despite current events, one thing is clear about American prosperity, it is dependant on the need for cheap energy. What he advocates is clear, direct, and spot-on. The need for developing alternative, non oil-based power sources needs to be among this countries highest priorities. While he represents many businesses and works in the energy industry, I believe he is speaking out not as a businessman, but first and foremost as a patriot.

The more we depend on the arabs & their oil is bassackwards. IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE! We, the middleclass can not afford the price of gas today. How on earth will our children be able to afford it tomorrow? Atleast T Bone is trying to do something....unlike our President, who still doesn't get it. I wish T Bone was running for President : ) I would vote for him!

I want a factory made CNG pickup right now. GMC, Ford, Dodge take note. If you can't get the technology right, call me. South America and Europe have had it for years abeit after market conversions. CNG is the only way we can move our products in an affordable way.

You can drill , offshore or anywhere else, until you come out on the other side of the planet, it does not solve anything. We have not enough refineries, our oil companies have not build any new ones or upgraded their existing once in 35 years. Even oil drilled in ALASKA IS TOO HEAVY FOR OUR REFINERIES AND GETS SOLD AND WE BUY FROM THE ARABS!The refineries are overloaded already and they have no space, equipment etc to handle anymore oil to be processed. Read up on the drilling for more before you say"drill", it won't work.

Douglas,
I don't know exactly how you got your job as an editor. Maybe your parents have connections or maybe you like getting on your knees.
The point is, the country is in turmoil mostly due to insanely high oil prices and etc...........
For you to critize a man trying to pull the country out of downward spiral towards a recession is absurd. Douglas, you are a fool and a failure.

off shore drilling won't help us for another 10 years and then only by a three percent improvement. in 10 years we could do a lot of research into a more successful power source. the republicans have to stop thinking about big business and start worrying about a new, and better power source.

Yes, on the surface this may make Mr. Pickens look a bit foolish, but consider the plain fact that nobody foresaw oil prices dropping. One has to wonder if OPEC didn't drop the price, in part, to take the wind out of the Pickens Plan.

I have nothing against responsible off shore drilling, but regardless of how much, or how little it would produce, IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 10 YEARS TO ACCOMPLISH ............we definitely need to do some other things also. Anyone with an IQ over 100 has to agree ...........!
