It was fun watching, as an NPR correspondent said last night, Joe the Plumber becoming a third man in the Presidential debates last night. I didn't realize (as I missed the first few minutes) that Joe is actually a real man -- Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, of Toledo, Ohio.Unfortunately, he's not really a plumber (though initial reports of him not being registered to vote are untrue; the registrar has his name spelled incorrectly). The Toledo Blade investigated and discovered that he's not licensed or registered to operate as a plumber in Ohio. As small businessmen and homeowners everywhere [update: everywhere I've been a homeowner, and in Toledo where Joe lives, evidently not true everywhere] know, each plumber, electrician and other specialty contractors must be licensed under their own name in their locality, with most areas requiring plumbers and electricians to go through union-approved apprenticeship programs. The only exception to this rule [in Toledo and many localities, like Portland, Oregon] is if you are a homeowner doing your own work; technically, I'm not even allowed to have my dad, a licensed general contractor, work on the plumbing and electricity in my home (he's a stickler for the rules so he had my husband do the work under his counsel). Joe says he does plumbing work under someone else's license; though this is, of course, against local statutes.
So, though he does (with questionable legality) do plumbing work under W. Newell Corp.'s license, he's definitely not a plumber. Joe the unwitting victim of a debater's technique? Joe the regular guy working unethically to feed his family? Joe the symbol of our economy: Thousands of guys pretending they don't understand the rules so they can make a great living (Joe's hypothetical revenue -- not his real income -- was $250,000 a year), and getting away with it.
Reminds me of a couple hundred corporate executives in the news these days.

We should probably forget about plumber's welfare and forget the fact that Obama wants to spread the wealth. All because this guy might be a fake.

The point is not to trash Joe the Plumber. Our focus should be on the issues. And the fact is that a person in Joe's situation would actually be better off financially under Obama's tax plan according to the analyses that came out this morning.
Less than three weeks left, as a proud Obama supporter, we have to stay focused on the bigger issues (the economy, the war, education, etc.) and avoid the traps of frustration and negativity before we start turning into the McCain/Palin campaign and attacking anything we see.

So who do you believe? - the guy who says he's a hard-working plumber or the gal who claims to be a fair-minded journalist. I mean, who checkout out Ms. Gilbert's "facts" about the plumber to see if they were true? The FACT is that far more left-wing, in-bed-with-the-liberals journalists LIE (and do it daily in the media) than the poor sod who just wants to be left alone by the government to earn a living without having to give half of it back for "re-distribution" by demagogues and liberal politicians. If you tell a lie long enough, un-discerning people will begin to believe you, Ms. Gilbert!!!

you people are so dumb. Do some research. He did NOT make 250K. He was referring to REVENUE of 250K, not profit. Do you know the difference between revenue and profit? The 250K rule affects revenue, not profit, and ALL small business owners should be SHAKING nervous!

The man lied in what was obviously a politically inspired ambush. You lie on camera, the media will eat you alive. Don't know that, it's natural selection time, baby, natural selection.
Oh, and he makes $40,000 a year - according to his divorce documents. And I'm certain his X is already calling her lawyer to open up that can of worms again.

I guess the American Dream will finally be over! The Obama people (D) have decided that you are rich at 250K. What a sad fact. The class and race warfare is there strong card and there are always more have nots than haves. So your chances to become a millionare will even be more difficult because if you try to get ahead you can not. They will take you wealth before you can invest it. This plumber guy is reflecting on this. Barry does not want to build bridge and repair roads he wants to reach in your pocket and give to someone who has not earned it!

in the state of Florida you can work as a plumber as long as you have the backing of a Master plumber, or a state licensed plumber.....a state licensed plumber can own 5 shops anywhere in the satate, meaning they can be spread out through the state. My brother n law is a licensed plumber owns his business..he can sign permits for people and the owners do work as long as it passes inspection, in the end if anything happens , he will be held responsible. . . Some states don't require a license but occupational

My understanding is it's taxable income.
If a small business owner makes 250,001.00 in taxable income, then his additional Obama tax owed over what he would owe today is 3 cents.
Okay, 3 cents. It the difference between now, 36% of the taxable income above 250,000, and Obama's proposal, 39% of the taxable income above $250,000.
Small business owners should be gleeful as 95 out 100 of their customers will have more money in their pockets and the other 5 will still be well off.

My, My, My... I love to hear all the numbers. Obama want to "spread the wealth". He wants to give 95% of Americans a tax cut...?? So, 40% of Americans don't even pay taxes... so he is now taking $$ from hard working Americans to give $$ to those who don't even pay taxes???? What the? How does this help us out of this crisis? Because I like to place all my trust on people who live on welfare to bail us out of this mess. How does that make since? How does giving them more money help our economy? Those in that income bracket that have all the subprime mortgages is what got us rolling down this path... Now Let's give them MORE $ to throw away and not pay their bills. Maybe they will declare bankruptcy and we will pay all their debt off while we are at it... This is so stupid!!!!!!

A taxpayer who insists upon not paying for the infrastructure that allows for his income is basically reaching into the pockets of people who are less well off and stealing his coins.
Not only do I believe that, so does Warren Buffett and Bill Gates.
The average American worker earns something like $40,000.
So $250,000 is one heck of a lot more than $40,000.
