Closing Bell: Strong week, weak ending with DJIA, S&P, Dow down

More

Today's economic numbers looked just as we expect for some time: Horrible. University of Michigan sentiment and housing looked atrocious. Warren Buffett wrote a short piece in the New York Times calling it the time to buy stocks. Today was an options expiration date and that led to added volatility throughout the trading day. Below are today's unofficial closing bell levels:

DJIA 8,852.22 (-127.04; -1.41%)
NASDAQ 1,711.29 (-6.42; -0.37%)
S&P500 940.50 (-5.93; -0.63%)
10YR T-Bond 3.938% (+0.002%)

Gilead Sciences (NASDAQ: GILD) traded up marginally after beating earnings with $0.55 non-GAAP EPS vs. $0.49 estimates, but it did outline how currencies helped out its bottom line. Shares still managed to trade up today and shares were up 3% at $42.67 right before the close.

Google Inc.
(NASDAQ: GOOG) was one of the bright spots after beating earnings yesterday. It had recently maintained that it wasn't part of Wall Street's issues and the company was holding up better than many expected. Shares were up more than 6% at $374.50 in today's final trading minutes.

Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) traded higher after UBS raised its rating to a buy. It wasn't just a value call, as the firm noted that channel checks indicate its router sales and demand are holding up rather well considering the climate today. Shares were up over 7% at $18.10 in today's final minutes of trading.

Rite Aid Corp. (NYSE: RAD) announced that it received a NYSE delisting notice because it had traded for 30 days under $1 a share. It is planning a reverse stock split (which will need shareholder approval in December), to address this, but that is viewed with caution by traders. Shares were down 6% at $0.73 in today's final minutes of trading.

VF Corp. (NYSE: VFC) traded after the company raised its dividend but lowered guidance ahead to roughly 3% to 4% growth rather than 8%. Shares were down almost 5% at $55.58 in today's final minutes before the close.
