McDonald's has been hit by one serious critique after another of food safety and nutrition. The company has gone from being a family chain to something only those desperate to save time or money want. There have been half-hearted efforts to modernize, but what McDonald's really needs is a complete menu makeover.
I'm not talking about changing away from hamburgers in all their infinite variety, either. But over the last couple decades the eating public has gotten a lot more picky and worried about getting fat or sick from mad cow disease or some contaminant.
There have been many serious critiques of their impact on worldwide nutrition. Eric Schlosser described in Fast Food Nation how mega-producer McDonald's uses butchering assembly lines. In an era of food safety concern, "a single fast-food hamburger now contains meat from dozens or even hundreds of different cattle." Morgan Spurlock examined in the movie Supersize Me and a related book what happens when an individual -- or a whole country -- eats too much McDonald's.
Of course, McDonald's is facing pressure from the other side, too. We want cheap food. Especially in a recession, people love the dollar menu. But McDonald's has just got to improve the food.
Don't get me wrong. I love the fries and the biscuit breakfast sandwiches. But they're still serving the same basic hamburger they did when I was in grammar school: the most artificial bun you can imagine; a thin gelatinous patty; and tiny squares of pickles and onions on everything. I'm sure it's not the nutritionally most offensive, but that bun just drives me nuts. Are they still working off a stock of buns from the 1950s? Can't we please move to something a little more like real bread?
Those little flecks of onions and pickles are gross. If you like those condiments, they're not enough and they're too bland. If you don't like them, you have to flick out 50 tiny pieces from your meal (which I have been doing for 30-some years).
I'm hoping that we're coming to the end of factory-produced meats. We've had just too many food scares. McDonald's has done some great things; in 1997 they started requiring their meat plants to live up to the humane standards of Temple Grandin. Schlosser says they still have a way to go, especially in improving workers' conditions.
I'm not a vegetarian, but I wouldn't mind seeing McDonald's put a little more effort in their vegetarian hamburgers. I figure if anyone can make a veggie burger taste good, it's McDonald's.
McDonald's got its start producing food of a consistent quality when people were afraid of what they would get if they ate at a strange town's diner. Now people know what they'll get at McDonald's -- but they're afraid of it.

McDonalds also needs to remember that putting all that seasoning on their burgers makes them taste nasty as well as being a health hazard for people who cannot have all that seasoning in their diet. The only thing McDonalds really has going for them these days are their french fries.

The problem is that everyone trys to change what works. Mcdonalds has a fine menu. Im glad the formula for their sandwiches hasn't changed. Hardee's did an entire menu makeover and now at least their lunch menu stinks! I used to love their mushroom and swiss but they changed the formula for the mushroom sauce and now it pretty much sucks. Leave Mcdonalds alone! If you dont like the little onions then ask for the sandwich without them! I don't want to sound like an old fogy here but remember once in a while doing things like in the "old days" works out better than any supposed improvements. If you are that concerned about healthy food then go munch on a head of lettuce and stay out of Mcdonalds!

Seriously? Grow up. Noone is forcing you to eat fast food to begin with. If you have a problem then don't eat there.

Nobody is forcing you to eat at McDonalds. If you appreciate a really fast hamburger - of which there are many versions from which to choose - then McDonalds is a perfect place to eat. It's the quality and taste of their food that is making people gain weight. We should be careful about the amount of Mc's food we eat and we won't gain the weight. McDonalds is probably the cleanest of all fast food places and their quality control makes them very dependable

The only thing I would change is the Big Mac. Let's have a bigger Big Mac.One that you dont need a magnifying glass to find the meat. And why not add onion rings to the menu?
A jr Big Mac is ok for those who need it, but I'd like to see a granddaddy Bic Mac.
And I agree, give me back my beef stock fries.

McDonald's has a veggie burger - at least overseas...I had it when I was in London and it was actually pretty good. They should roll it out in medium and large metro markets in the US.

Having been working for McDonalds in the past, the quality has gotten more "bland and tasteless" because of sodium and other health concerns. We used to season the patties with a salt and pepper mixture, now the patties are 2/3 of the way cooked and put into a heating vat to await being made to order- no more heat lamp burgers or waste. The fries are being cooked in Soybean oil rather than animal fat/ vegatable fat oil combination, so even the fries are tasting different. Apple Pies are no longer fried, but baked and don't even compare to their former counterparts. It all comes down to making it geared toward the "Baby Boomer" halth scares of the late 1980's. Seniors seem to be McDonald's biggest customers, and they have altered the menu tremendously. This is why the food has become a bland experience for alot of customers. If you are seriously concerned for your health, then eating McDonalds 3 times a day may not help you in your endeavor. I say Mickey D's needs to go back to the original formula that made them the #1 franchise it once was.

I'm not afraid to say it. I LOVE McDonalds food and have for the past 50 years. My only concern is with the employees at my local McDs in Olney, Maryland. They are nice, friendly people but they don't always understand the English language.

Even my kids don't like Mickey D's nuggets! My boys stopped asking to go to McDonald's and are now wanting to go to Wendy's where they love the chicken nuggets! They rank chicken nuggets in this order: #1: Wendy's, #2: Chick-fil-A, #3. Arby's, #4: Burger King, #5: KFC, #6: McDonald's.

gimme a break! Do you think this is a 5 star restaurant and you are a critic for a fine dining magazine? Its Mcdonalds! Quick food, cheap price for people on the go. It is not for eating everyday or for those who expect organic quality in every bite. Go bust on somebody else.

McDonald's should stay true to what works.
Those "tiny flecks of onion" and warmed up pickle are precisely why I stop when I do.
And their additions of biscuits and the way they will make your to go coffee for you...FANTASTIC.
McDonald's is what it is. And it works.

I think McDonald's should have BOCA Burgers they are the best vegetarian burgers out there that I know of, they have the charbroiled taste. They are delicious. They can "doctor" them up just like their beef burgers. Other than that I like McDonald's and I don't think they should change, other than just adding more vegetarian variety. I love their fries and they are cooked in vegetable oil. Btw...I don't think there is anything wrong with their buns, in fact, whenever I eat their fish burger their buns taste better than other fast food places. They are not too "bready" like other places. When the buns are too "bready" it takes away from the burger.

The first time I went to McDonalds it was 1969! I was 8 years old and I thought it was "wonderland". I had a Big Mac and could'nt finish it. Today a Big Mac hardly even has any meat on it!
In advertisement the meat is thick and overhangs the bun. But in reality the whole sandwich is just a soft pile of mush. Straighten it out Mc D.

I am a Sonic gal myself, but sometimes nothing is better than a McDonalds' cheeseburger and fries. No Ketchup, no pickles, but I DO love those onions with mustard. Really now, why should they change when so many people love the food the way it is? There are other places to go for veggie burgers. And there ARE healthy things on the menu like low fat milk, apple slices, and salads.

If you don't like the food then don't eat there. McDonald's has tried low cal healthy choices before then they pull them away because people don't buy them. If you like a company's product then you purchase it and give them your business, if you don't like them you don't go there. That's the American way. People gain weight because they don't pay attention to what they eat and they don't exercise. Nutrition information at www.mcdonalds.com --Flecks of pickles? Anyone have a clue what a pickle fleck is? Or does anyone have a clue why all the AOL reporters that post stories usually sound like they have no clue about facts.

I have to agree with all these others here. Mc Donalds is one of the best, cheapest and safest fast foods out there. The writer sounds like a whiney 4 year old. I don't know where what Mc Donalds she goes to, but the buns are not artificial tasting at all, the fleks of onion are sweet and delicious and the pickles are not little squares, there are 2 round slices on each burger. Being barely 30 years old, she's a typical complainer like most in journalism today and probably a preppy. I'll agree and say, 'If you don't like Mc Donalds, don't go there. I'm sure you'd be better off with your over priced latte from Starbucks and your organic salad from Au'Bon Pan."

Get rid of the basic burger? Hmmm. The problem is, as cheap and artificial, etc., that burger is, it is, for many, many people, comfort food. I think it would be a mistake to get rid of it. While I usually opt for something else on the menu, I occasionally get the basic cheese burger, especially at times when I need a little grounding. It brings back memories of happy childhood times.
