As The Doors' Jim Morrison once sang, This is the end, retailer Circuit City Stores, Inc. (NYSE: CC) now sings the lyrics, referring to its declining business. As expected, the second-largest consumer electronics chain in the U.S. will be closing 155 stores across the U.S. and even exit 12 markets completely. Perhaps the sale of those closed locations and the shuttering of all those employees will put the retailer back into the black, if only slightly. Those 155 stores? They represent 20% of the company's overall locations. In order to conserve cash and try to break over the $1/share level again (CC shares closed at $0.26 Friday), the retailer will lay off thousands of employees as it closes 155 stores. While this may not spell the start of profitability for the retailer, it has to do something. Nobody wants to buy the company -- even at its fire sale stock price -- and competitor Best Buy, Inc. (NYSE: BBY) is literally pummeling it into the ground at every turn.
The retailer recently received a letter from the NYSE as its share price are violating the exchange's minimum covenants.
Every time I drive by the two Circuit City locations in my area, the parking lots are empty and the stores look abandoned. The few times I've ventured inside to get a feel for what a retail ghost store feels like, the merchandise was outdated, pricing was missing and employees were sitting around, chatting and texting.
Yet I'm still astonished that not a single entity has come forward with an offer for the company at $2/share. But even that price could be too high.

Every single time I read some article like this I get sick to my stomach. I work at Circuit City...a store that isn't closing...and the disregard the media and others have for their fellow man is disgusting. Preying on the weak isn't a sign of strength you know. Those 5,500 people who just lost their jobs are going to start collecting unemployment, on YOUR dollar, so I don't know why everyone is so happy. There are parents who aren't going to be able to have Christmas for their kids...Adults unable to pay rent or eat...and then THERE IS YOU. Yeah, YOU. Complaining about service is one thing, but hoping someone loses their job is just sick. During our meeting we had people CRYING because our fellow associates will soon be reaching out for help. Our economy is terrible so ask yourself this before you make a stupid comment "what if this were me?" Electronics is the hardest retail sector to be in right now and just watch...if Circuit City closes PRICES WILL GO UP.

Does anyone remember that Circuit City, just a few years ago, was the best performing company in Jim Collins' book "Good to Great"? Obviously, Mr. Collins' approach to management is worth some reconsideration given the fall of Circuit City. It would seem a new approach to management would be worth considering. I also work at circuit city. and also a store that is not closing. it is a shame that stores are closing but it was a much needed decision. most successful retailers close 10 percent of their stores about every 10 years. circuit city has never done that. you close the ones that are in bad markets and reopen or relocate in a new hotspot. they all arent losing their jobs, most who still have a district will be relocated to other stores in the market, and the others who are unable to relocate will recieve some sort of severence. so its not all bad, but still the thought of people losing their jobs in these tough times is rough. i have great confidence in our new ceo james marcum, circuit city isnt going down anytime soon.

It is, however, a shame that Circuit City didn't start closing stores sooner. Its just one more reason for the media to jump on a company that's doing it's best to restructure. 155 stores sounds deliciously horrible to the media. Circuit City closing 10 stores does not. Again, I'm praying for those who lost their jobs...Fairfield employees...you have my deepest sympathies.

I say let them go under. I was going to buy a computer there about a 1 1/2 years ago, and the service was lousy. I ended up telling the sales guy to forget it, and I walked out, went to Best Buy and bought my laptop there. I bought another at Best Buy about 6 months later and 2 more just this week. I do not even bother walking in a Circuit City anymore, good riddance.

It's unfortunate to hear about the bankruptcy and how other people would ridicule this. My spouse works at CC and has been working there for almost a decade. His income has supported our family and even though his location is not closing, I feel for those families that have spouses work for CC and have been laid-off. If I put myself in their shoes, we would be out of money to pay rent, for food, etc. It's unbelievable how other people can be so mean. Just because one lousy associate made a bad impression, does not mean all associates are the same way. Hoping other people lose their jobs is so evil. Maybe its better to keep your own opinions to yourself if nothing good is going to come out of it.
