Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) apparently faces some major image issues.
According to a September ChangeWave survey of more than 4,000 consumers, Abercrombie was the store they said they're least likely to shop at in the future.
Consumers primarily objected to the company's risqué self-portrayal. One respondent took them to task for "immoral advertising and the message it sends to teens."
Other disaffected responses include:
- "Seriously disagree with their philosophy."
- "Overly suggestive catalog."
- "Don't like their advertising scheme."
- "Moral values."
- "I don't like the image they project."
Compounding the image issue is the huge pullback in consumer spending and the migration of consumers from mall stores to discounter retailers.
Survey respondents pointed to Costco (NASDAQ: COST), Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and Sam's Club as the top retailers they'll be shopping at this holiday season.
On the other hand, traditional retailers such as Bed Bath & Beyond (NASDAQ: BBBY), Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD), Macy's (NYSE: M), Linens 'n Things and JC Penney (NYSE: JCP) showed great weakness.

Abercrombie's image problems may be affecting its stock price, which has been on a steady decline since the beginning of 2008, when it peaked at around $80.
Currently, the stock is hovering in the low $20s, with no signs of a turnaround.

Another Les Wexner riches to rags story. Too much floor space, too full of themselves, and again linked to distateful positioning. Shades of the Limited Too implosion. The only reason I did not dump all my stock from the 90's is because i am going to extract every dime out of them for printing and mailing me every shareholder report, etc. When will they can this board of clowns.

I knew it would be a matter of time before this lewd way of advertising would catch up with Abercrombie. I haven't been in their store for several years now. Maybe they should hire an advertising executive that has some family values to show this chain how to advertise with families in mind. Perhaps their customer base would be larger if they advertised toward families with decent advertising. Just a thought.

That photo gallery didn't show a single photo related to Abercrombie ads. So I went to their website to see what all the hullabaloo was about and I'm confused. Those models were wearing alot more than those Victoria Secret skanks wear.

I used to shop at Abercrombie frequently, until they started the trashy ads. Now I won't even buy their clothes at a garage sale, as I don't want anyone to think I would buy their stuff for my kids or husband.

Typical over reaction with such shock and indignation. Let's make a big deal of people showing some skin but barely do you ever hear about all the violence shown on tv and in movies and the promotion of guns etc...Have an ad having a guy and girl touching with some skin and it's "OMG, what are they doing!!" But make movies like the Saw series figuring out new ways to kill and mutilate people and you barely hear a thing, gimme a break.

I think that they have always been overpriced. I think that is why they are not doing the business they were. Surprised that the author didn't point that out. The economy is hell right now and the expensive retailers are not doing good all the way around really. I just cant see spending $60 for a tee-shirt, that is just silly.

I have always been confused how Abercrombie, a clothing store, sells clothes when all of their advertising has models wearing nothing. It would seem to me that you would want to show people actualy wearing your product.
To the comment about "those Victoria Secret skanks" VS sells underwear. The models are wearing VS underwear. At least that makes some sense.

First off, ads are disgusting. My teen has never been allowed to wear/purchase items from Abercrombie. They used to make thong underwear in little girl sizes. I'm talking elementary schools/kindergarten sizes. That's when I refused to support them.
Second, same crappy styles with a bigger price tag. I encourage my daughter to have a style all her own. She calls people that wear clothes from this store "Abercrombie Zombies". Everyone looks the same and it's all about the status of wearing a name across the front.
Third, I'm not going to wear clothing with someones name printed on it unless the pay me. Why should I have to buy their over priced clothes and then advertise for them...come on.
My daughter gets lots of compliments on her style...almost every time she goes out and she never wears items printed with name brands all over them...so tacky.

I cannot believe what A & F have become. A couple of generations ago, they were a real class act with high-end goods, catering to people with taste. Now, they're just gutter scrapings.

Oh come on. Nothing wrong with sex or having hot girls/guys be a part of a company's image.
The people that disagree are probably women who "mooooooo", are size 14 and larger who can only wear tight-fitting stretch sweat pants (you know the type... you can see the cellulite from their fat legs forming bumps like the moon's surface.. and their big BIG flat butts with a very long buttcrack!). Oh how about those with fat FAT faces... a huge neck, little chin and tiny mouth carved out from this mold of head fat..
So go to Jenny Craig, get surgery, take a close look in the mirror cause you're probably ugly, too, THEN rethink Abercombie's mission.
STOP BEING FAT! STOP EATING!!!

It's IMMORAL!!!! And being sexy isn't immoral. How old are you..... 80? OLD PEOPLE'S VALUES SHOULD HAVE DIED 25 YEARS AGO.
WHEN DO WE GO FROM YOUNG AND HIP TO BEING AN OLD PRUDISH GRANNY OR GRANDPA?
STOP THINKING OLD. STOP BEING OLD. IT'S THE YEAR 2008... NOT 1947 IN THE SOUTH...

I can remember when Abercrombie was a hunting supplies store. They should have stayed that way. I never allowed my daughter to pay hard-earned money to do somebody else's advertising, especially a store with nothing to offer but sexual exploitation of (sometimes very young) girls and boys. The Christian knock-off "A Bread Crumb and Fish" was a well-deserved wake-up call that they obviously didn't get. No tears here.

So incredibly true. Their advertising is a piece of cloth short of porn. And way too expensive. I refuse to spend twenty bucks on a plain colored tank top, thanks.
Though Alan is right as well. To quote a guy in my school "This is America! Violence is just fine, but a little bit of sex? Hell no!"
It's kind of ironic that they shun, and make taboo something that creates life(sex), and they support and cheer-on something that takes it(violence)

Abercrombie has more problems than suggestive advertising. As a mom of young teens, shopping in the store is barely tolerable. High prices, music blasting, perfume spritzed on all the clothing, and clerks who will not let you in the fitting room with your child. I steer my children to other stores because of this. Wake up Abercrombie and realize who has the cash!

Oh come on "Me". I'm 5'10" 155lbs and wear a size 10. Pretty sure I don't match your "fat" discription. I don't agree with their ads, I think they're trashy. I don't like walking past those stores with my little girls (both under 3). I don't think that a trip to the mall needs to involve a 7' tall photograph of a guy with no shirt and his underwear hanging out. If they want to put those kinds of photos in their catalogs or online, fine. I really don't care about that. But don't have it displayed so prominently in such a public place as a shopping mall.

"me"? What. The. F---ing hell? That is so stereotypical. It's another reason Abercrombie has a bad image, that only 'b--ches' shop there. Your disgusting. If your going to argue a point, at least use logic. If you even know what that word means -.-

You know, I can't understand exactly what market A&F is aiming at - gays? With all those naked men? And what's with the token girl tossed into the mix? Choose a side, A&F, LOL. All they're trying to do is get attention. But I've been in their mysterious dark store and all I've seen are drab overpriced cotton shirts ($70 and up), distressed jeans (even more $$), tee shirts $30 and up. WTF? Who buys this stuff for that price? Oh, I know - if your rich frat boy son goes before the judge after being charged with date rape, he has the perfect rich frat boy uniform to wear.

As a mother, I find these adds too revealing. How do you teach a young girl showing everything from, panties out of jeans, to see through shirts, is just not classy? I am not a prude, I just feel it is getting out of control. The kids these days are pelted with sex. 4:00 in the afternoon, and I have to explain erectile disfunction. I teach the kids your body is nothing to be embarrased about, but the whole world does not need to see it!

Abercrombie & Fitch is over priced, under valued, over sexed. Not worth my time. So is Victoria's secret...sooner or later it will catch up with them....the public is not stupid! As for the person who is making fun of the values of the 40's....the world would be a better place if we still had them.
