AIG continues to spend money on stupid stuff
When longtime AOL executive Ted Leonsis got a holiday gift from his insurance company, American International Group Inc. (NYSE: AIG), of a Tiffany box with two champagne glasses, he got angry.
"Arrgghhh! Are you kidding me?" wrote the owner of the Washington Capitals hockey team on his blog. "Please! Save the money and keep some people employed. Give the money to charity. Take less money from the taxpayers. Why do I need two more champagne glasses? Dumbest thing I have seen this week."
Leonsis is, of course, right. The last thing AIG needs to be caught doing is wasting money on stupid crap like corporate junkets or buying rich people stuff they do not need. By the way, the most expensive Tiffany champagne glass I saw retails for $55. This underscores that the insurance company's management team does not get it.
When a company gets a multi-billion bailout from the federal government, it means things went horribly wrong. The same thinking that got them into this mess can't get them out of it. Limiting executive pay is a good first step, but more needs to be done.
Let us know if you got an expensive gift from a failed bank.

Until the CEO , board and all the top management are fired - at every company that the government bails out (i.e. they incompetent in their duties) then it will keep on being business as usual, on wall street, automakers, mortgage, etc.

USA GOV has become to EXPENSIVE ($$$) and INCOMPETENT for USA taxpayers, we get NO PROTECTION.

I just found this media release today on Wednesday, November 26, 2008:
http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/26/aig-continues-to-spend-money...
But what this blog fails to tell you is that Ted posted this earlier
on his own site on November 20, 2008.
http://www.tedstake.com/?p=3112
At the time of Ted's post, he also posted his comment on CNN's
Anderson Cooper's web site:
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/20/aig-what-are-they-thinking/#com...
But Ted knew very well that at the time of his post, the glasses were
sent to him prior all the problems that went down with AIG in
September. Below is the letter he posted last week on his site and at
Anderson Cooper's web site:
---------------------------------------------------------------
What are They Thinking?
My family uses AIG as an insurance company on our homes and personal
effects.
We received in the mail today a huge Tiffany box with two champagne
glasses within as a thank you for our business and for good cheer this
holiday season.
Arrgghhh! Are you kidding me?
Please! Save the money and keep some people employed. Give the money
to charity. Take less money from the taxpayers. Why do I need two more
champagne glasses? Dumbest thing I have seen this week. This holiday
season, my family has decided to do the following: We will donate
monies to a local charity instead of giving gifts to friends and
associates and let them know we have given cash to help the needy in
their name. Last year, we did something similar in that we purchased
two PlayPumps in our children’s names from PlayPumps International
instead of personal gifts.
We don’t need any more stuff and people out there need some basics and
help. Don’t exchange these kinds of gifts this holiday season. Please
help where it is really needed.

Below is a letter that I sent to Nick Ashooh (Senior Vice President,
Communications AIG) regarding this post:
Do you have a client named Ted Leonsis who is the owner of the
Washington Capitals and a former AOL executive?
He posted a comment on CNN's Anderson Cooper's web site about AIG:
http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/20/aig-what-are-they-thinking/#com...
This is the response I posted I (though CNN may not post mine.)
Ted Leonsis only seems to be promoting his web site: http://www.tedstake.com/
He received a Tiffany box with two champagne glasses, with good cheers
for a holiday season from AIG. So what? And his point is?
What an ingrate! It sounds like AIG was thanking him as a valued
customer…it makes good sound business sense to me! Maybe they should
have sent him dead flowers instead!
I would cancel all his policies!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick wrote me back saying he was aware of this but had stopped giving
out those sort of things last September.
And Ted didn't mention that it was last year, not this year he
recieved those glasses (what holidays are their in September?)
Did anybody notice the twist on the story from http://www.bloggingstocks.com?
Hmmmm? More media bashing?
OH, and my post defending AIG on Anderson Cooper's web site wasn't
added - It seems they only wanted to post negative things about AIG
for their readers (CNN - not very fair and balanced, are they?)

The writer needs more research, Tiffany's has several champange glasses over 55.00, many over $180.00 per glass. I totally agree someone needs to fire those dumb ______ at AIG. America can't take much more greed from the executives of large corperations. I don't know how they ever got to the top or how they can sleep at night.

Much ado over nothing. Ted Leonsis is a wealthy client of a multi-billion dollar insurance company.
If you had a mortgage, would the bank go into your living room and tell you not to order a pizza because you still owed them money for your loan?
AIG was just doing what any corporation would do - they cater to people who would be insulted by a cheap form letter saying. "Happy Holidays...and oh, by the way, thanks for your business."

Every year around the holiday season, I receive address labels in appreciation for my business from my insurance agent. It's nice to be appreciated! But, now I wonder if my insurance agent sends more luxurious gifts to their wealthier clients. You see, people aspire to attach themselves to people of success in some way or another. It makes them feel special. If I receive dixie cups instead of Tiffany glasses, either the sender was frugal, or I'm not someone people aspire to identify with. That's ok, the world is a big place. There is plenty of room for ordinary. It's more practical!
