Here in the Portland metropolitan area, 28 bike delivery employees will be hired -- by United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS). It may seem counterintuitive, but here in Portland, Oregon, where we UPS can only deliver 25-50 packages per day by bicycle, compared to up to 150 by truck, but Portland area spokesman Jeff Grant says UPS will save $38,000 in vehicle operation and upkeep costs for every three delivery bicycles used.
After all, UPS started using bicycles to deliver packages 100 years ago in Seattle, and started a pilot program in Atlanta and Seattle last year. Bicycle delivery is ideal for the holiday season as it allows the company to expand its service without having to expand its fleet of expensive delivery vehicles; bikes are about $600 each, and judging by the reaction to popular biking blogs, the company will have no trouble filling the available jobs with bikers eager to prove their mettle. It's not only sensible economics, but fantastic PR for a company that struggles with a rather stodgy image. Expanding the bike delivery program for all the company's busy seasons would be a fiscally responsible plan that could also pay big dividends in customer good will.

A nice article however after a terrible insurance interaction with UPS I will take every opportunity to expose their shameful insurance policies to the public. They sell insurance but do not stand behind the service they sell.If you think this is just " sour grapes " then just google UPS Complaints and check it out for yourselves.Happy Holidays UPS

UPS DELIVERS ALL MY PACKAGES. THIS HOLIDAYS, THEY ARE DELIVERING ON GOLF CARTS. IT IS GREAT. I DON'T LIKE FEDX BECAUSE IF YOU AREN'T AT HOME THEY TAKE YOUR PACKAGES BACK AND LEAVE NO NOTE. SO YOU WAIT AND WAIT FOR PACKAGE, NOT KNOWING IT WAS RETURNED. THEN YOU CALL WHERE YOU BOUGHT AND THEY TELL YOU IT WAS RETURNED. SO YOU HAVE TO REORDER AND PAY AGAIN. HOPING IT WON'T BE FEDX THAT DELIVERS. LOVE UPS. AND IT'S DRIVERS.

Ok, bicycling is economical, as well as healthy excercize. But what's next? delivering milk and ice by horse-drawn wagons? Why not go whole-hog and have the Post Office mail carriers walk the route on foot? What goes around, comes around!

if bruce would better prepare his products for shipping by packaging them securely he would not even need to use insurance which is only good if the packaging is adequate. bruce must be a dumb butt !!!

Anyone who believes that UPS trucks can only handle "up to 150 packages per day" is absolutely crazy. Research your article AOL or talk to a representative.
There are many bulk stops that get 150 packages and more. That is just one stop. One stop on a package car that is making 130 plus stops per day. If I could only load 150 packages on a delivery car I would be fired.

Its all good at start. But when you trade leisure for business. The homemade cookie starts to crumble. Wait for the winter rainy day, your driver is peddling a two hundred lbs. plus cart. Your wonder where your package is. Then late evening here comes this soggy drench package carrier delivering the package. Sounds like a flu academic to me.

Maxwell, it doesnt matter how good you pack your stuff, if the package is lost. I have had two packages delivered to wrong address, so they say, with no recovery. Maxwell must have a crack running down his entire face.

I am also like Bruce. I ship well over 100 packages a month and NEVER HAD UPS PAY ONE CLAIM. Starting shipping via DHL I am now a very happy customer. Filed a claim against DHL and was paid in a very timely manner

I always ship UPS, the Post Office doesn't care if your packages get there or not. They are paid by the Government, they get paid no matter what. With UPS, they are into SERVICE.

Stupid ideo. Whatever WE do to cut corners and stop pollution, etc., CHINA, and other foreign lands are making up for by polluting wantonly. What a huge waste of time.

In my area that would be a joke. I can see them now in the ice, snow, 95 degree temps, etc. Plus pulling the mountains ! This crazy idea might work in a few inner cities but I would venture to say over 95% of UPS territory this goes beyond saying it's not feasible. Who comes up with these crazy ideas anyway?

Ask Western Union about bicycles and see where they are now. They once had a lock on the telegraph business. If you are old enough to remember them they were every where and they wore brown clothing.

UPS started out as a bike messanger service more than 100 years ago. Looks like big brown is going back to they're roots.
