If one of more of the car makers fails, unemployment in Michigan could go above 10%. The state is already the mortgage foreclosure capital of the world. The tax base has bee ravaged. Michigan may not be able to take much more.
According to The Wall Street Journal (subscription requited), "Michigan has been in a seven-straight year recession," says Patrick Anderson, chief executive of Anderson Economic Group, an East Lansing, Mich., consulting firm.
The news headlines about states in trouble have gone to California. But it does not rely on one industry for a huge portion of its employment. Car companies are also major tax payers. Michigan's budget could go billions of dollars into the red if that income disappears.
What happens if a car firm goes down? Michigan could go into receivership. It has already happened to several of the cities there, including Flint, one of the largest.
Of course, if that happens, the federal government will be left holding the bag. Congress will have to find another few billion to fix what is becoming a long, long line of bailouts.

Michigan is going to be the new Mississippi or Arkansas. Michigan will be the state where people come to see the Great Lakes and hundreds of closed factories. The eye sore of grungy closed factories will contrast to the beauty of the Great Lakes shores. Nothing is permanent, not even the universe. Michigan has to get used to the drastic reduction of revenue. It used to be that Michigan was the destination of the poor in the South looking for work. It is the converse now. Michigan will adapt, but will not be a state with a lot of revenue from the auto workers. High tech work is the domain of the Asians now. So Michigan will be a place for solitude.

CHAPTER 11 IS NOW, OR CHAPTER 7 (DESOLUTION) WILL IN THE FUTURE BE THE ONLY RESULT; LET THE JUDGE SUBROGATE THOSE PROBLAMATIC CONTRACTS; AND UNFUNDED RETIREE HEALTH & PENSIONS. TIME TO SUCK IT UP. BETTER THAN 60% OF US ARE TIRED OF THE WELFARE GRABBERS OF NM, LA, MS & AK, AND NOW MI. A HAND UP, NOT A HAND OUT! CHANGE YOUR WAYS..., THE REST OF US ARE WEARY OF YOUR SELF MADE PFLIGHT.

Michigan is by far not the only State that will have budgetary problems. The financial problems extend into all areas of government and the private sectors as well.
Will Congress take care of the big 3? Who knows? Franklin called them the august body and I call them the buffoon body. They failed us all by allowing the financial system to go un-regulated, even though they have two committees in both the House and Senate that could have stopped the mortgage nonsense,or at the very least, sounded an alarm. Thereafter, at the Treasury and Federal Reserve's request, they approved a bail out bill for the financials. This was not a "loan", but an outright financial "gift". AIG certainly saw it as such and the executive end immediately had a celebration "party". (They called it a meeting). Now, the automakers ask for a LOAN and guarantees as such. How does Congress respond - with a big NO of course. This only confirms my belief that our representatives are on the payroll of Wall St. and don't give a damn about the middle class. If you are not rich or poor - you are screwed. Our collective group of elected morons does not care if they put millions out of work and cause a depression, they only care about themselves.
Worse, we re-elected most of the worst offenders.
Shame on the U.S. public for not paying attention.
