Before the call: JPMorgan's Q4 earnings


JPMorgan and Chase (NYSE: JPM) is scheduled to release fourth-quarter 2008 results Thursday morning. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect JPMorgan to post a loss of $0.01 per share. That compares to a profit of $0.86 per share in the same period of the previous year. Revenues for the quarter, though, are expected to have risen 8.3% from a year ago to $18.8 billion. JPMorgan has topped earnings estimates in the past three quarters.

For the full year, analysts are looking for earnings of $1.32 per share on revenue of $69.3 billion, down from $4.38 per share and $71.4 billion in the previous year.

The consensus recommendation of analysts shifted from hold to buy JPM during the past quarter. The share price has fallen 17.8% since the beginning of the year, and it is 37.4% lower than it was a year ago.
