Activision Blizzard releases 'Guitar Hero: Metallica' play list; metalheads drool

More

Believe me, I am no Guitar Hero fanboy (although I do own the game), but as a 30-something male who would listen to Metallica's Black CD repeatedly before playing in a college football game, even I am excited about the latest offering from Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI).

Seriously, what heavy metal fan isn't drooling at the chance of playing air guitar to some of the greatest Metallica songs of all time? But before I get too far ahead of myself, the news is that the play list for the game has been released (I found the list through RollingStone.com).

Yes, there are some dogs on the list (I'm not a big fan of The Unforgiven or One - it's just too long); but the chance to play my Guitar Hero axe to Seek and Destroy and Sad But True is enough to make me shell out the cash when the game is available for the PlayStation 2.

Even though the Metallica list is killer, it could be the extra songs that get others excited. No Excuses by Alice in Chains, Albatross by Corrosion of Conformity (a heavy metal must hear), Beautiful Mourning by Machine Head, Queen's Stone Cold Crazy, Slayer's War Ensemble, and Ace of Spades by Motorhead are all on the play list. I can play guitar for Lemmy from the comfort of my living room? Cool.

The question is, will the latest installment of ATVI's mega-hit game series be enough to boost the stock? Yes, the shares have rebounded a bit from their January lows in the $8 region, but a current peak at ATVI's Bollinger Bands suggests that the stock may be a bit overbought. This situation could lead to a drop in the shares, but let's not discount the fact that statistics from GameStop show Guitar Hero World Tour is outselling Rock Band 2 by a 2-to-1 ratio (with thanks to VideoGaming247.com for the data).

Will this trend continue with Guitar Hero: Metallica? When Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was released, it outsold the band's latest studio album ... maybe there are enough Metallica fans out there to produce similar results with this edition of the game. In fact, I'd bet there may be more and it could serve to push ATVI's quarterly sales significantly higher.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to go put on my sweatbands, tattered flannel, combat boots and camo shorts so I can go play Guitar Hero: Legends of Rock. I hear Pearl Jam needs me to play lead on Evenflow.
