President Obama is now searching for a third candidate to fill the Commerce Secretary position now that Senator Judd Gregg has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position. Scouring the Intrawebs, it seems that the word that most people are using for this rebuff is "embarrassment." While I am a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, I don't know if I would go as far as saying this is an embarrassment - the President tried to reach across party lines and got bit. In fact (and I am watching out for lightning here), Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel hit the nail on the head when he said, "It's better we discovered it now than later ... If I said it wasn't a disappointment, that would lack credibility."Bottom line, Gregg "searched his heart" (President Obama's words) and felt that he couldn't cross party lines. In fact, Gregg noted that he and the administration didn't pay enough attention to policy disputes, including both the handling of the census and the much-debated stimulus package. To his credit, Gregg took most of the blame in his press conference, stating that "... this was simply a bridge too far for me."
So, this is two nominees down, can Obama swing and miss again with his third nominee? If there is anything that President Obama can thank the current economic crisis for is taking a bit of the focus off the continued failures of some of his nominees (again, please understand that I am not criticizing the President - just pointing out facts).
Facing two outs in the bottom of the seventh here (it isn't the ninth yet) with two strikes, where does the President turn to hit one out of the park rather than swing and miss again? There are some interesting nominees out there on the Intrawebs, with the Huffington Post suggesting Bill Gates (imagine him unleashing a jar of mosquitoes at a congressional hearing) and we could see Symantec's (NASDAQ:SYMC)CEO John Thompson surface as a candidate again.
If there is any good news coming out of the situation, President Obama has some time. Watch for him to take his time to find the "perfect" candidate, hoping to at least keep himself alive with a foul tip.

Robert Reich - a more dedicated and competent individual couldn't be found.
It would definitely run counter to any perception of a bi-partisan choice. But then again, who cares about that?!
I’m not being flippant with that question. I simply mean that most folks base their choices (of anything) on fanciful and peculiar criteria.
Take a look at the outcome of the Daschle selection. I heard many people – from both sides of the aisle and all walks of life – comment that it was such a shame about Tom Daschle, because he was…
… THE Perfect Choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services.
So, we forge ahead looking for a squeaky clean person, who just happens to be not-so-perfect. Or vice-versa. Doesn’t matter which. What matters, is that –that- is the criteria..

I like John Thompson to be nominated for the position of Transportation Secretary. I think he will accept it
