In today's sports culture, there is a word that almost always piques the interest of the die-hard fan and the sports pop culture enthusiast as well. That word? Throwbacks. You know, when the New York Jets come out in the navy and gold of the New York Titans; the Cleveland Cavaliers ditch their current unis to wear the orange and blue made popular in the late 80s, the Cincinnati Reds ditch their current uni for the double knits of the Big Red Machine, it happens all over the sporting world. However, one place where I never thought I would hear of throwbacks is in the beverage world. Yes, the beverage world.I was digging through this article from Beverage Industry and found a very interesting tidbit in the Value and Flavor Successes section. Pepsi (NYSE: PEP) is going to start distributing Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback - seriously. What makes these beverages throwbacks? They are actually going to be formulated with sugar *gasp* not real sugar!?! Yes, real sugar ladies and gents ... real nectar of the cane, sugar.
Yes, Pepsi is going to make a couple of its beverages with sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup. That reminds me of my halcyon days of junior high school, guzzling a Mountain Dew before a Wednesday evening football game in the locker room (where the coach couldn't see us). Sugar, the original performance-enhancing "drug." The two beverages that will boast real sugar are Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback. No word on what sort of packaging these cans will boast, but I have a sneaky suspicion it won't be the current revamped logo (which the article calls "part of a holistic campaign aimed at drawing in younger consumers."). Perhaps we will get to see the "old school" Pepsi and Mountain Dew cans ... that would be fun.
Last Friday, Pepsi announced that its fourth-quarter earnings fell but managed to match the Wall Street's estimate. With the stock finishing the week on a high note (but lower than a week earlier), let's see if Pepsi can carry over Friday's momentum when the opening bell sounds tomorrow.

Good news: The sugar. It really does make a difference. I got some of the real-sugar Coca-Cola Classic in Canada this summer, and enjoyed it thoroughly, even smuggling a case back into the U.S.
Bad news: Only Pepsi is doing this? Can't stand the stuff. Always been a KO girl. Though Mountain Dew is quite the pick-me-up, HFCS or otherwise.
