Yahoo, Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) has crept up in the last five months insofar as internet search market share gains. Although the gains have been small from a percentage perspective, the fact that competitor Google, Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) has lost a half of a percentage point recently at least is giving Yahoo! some hope. Google still stands way above the competition when it comes to internet search market share at 63% compared to Yahoo!'s 21%.But, Yahoo! upped its market share percent 0.5% from January. So, Yahoo! gained and Google lost, albeit by the same small number. Is this indicative of a search turnaround for Yahoo!? Of course not, but any good news -- no matter how small -- is welcome at the Sunnyvale, Ca. company these days. Even with a new CEO, 2009 is very cloudy for Yahoo! unless CEO Bartz can strike some deals and perform other wizardry in short order.
With perennial third-place internet search player Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) also making a small gain of 0.2% in internet search market share, the failure of Yahoo! and Microsoft to merge in 2008 still hangs over the head of both companies and will even into 2010. For now, there is no real large competitor to Google. Small percentage gains aren't going to change that, and Yahoo! -- at least in internet search -- will be a very distant second, probably forever.

That people in financials still think they know the first thing about
forever
at least tells you plenty about what to expect from them going
forward.
I'm really heartbroken for people - forget who's deserving in whose eyes and who's this that and the other: A prestigious student believes long
enough that their intelligence is what gives them value, and they're
utterly at a loss to know what to do with the loss not of their
careers but of their whole concept of what has given their life some
vital justification and purpose. They're trapped. That is more significant than their lifestyles ever are. Or ours. This is not off topic in a financial page. Sure we'll be helping them tangibly, but pray for them. That fiscal help may just eventually assist them back into the personal quicksand I outline above.
