Republican Senator John McCain is joining the growing ranks of "Let General Motors (NYSE: GM) file for bankruptcy" advocates.
"The best thing that could probably happen to General Motors, in my view, is they go into Chapter 11," he told Fox News yesterday. A bankruptcy filing, he explained, would allow the company to more quickly restructure itself to become "stronger, better, leaner."
Speaking on ABC, Senator Richard Shelby echoed his sentiments, saying that "subsidization of anything for very long never works. . . I've suggested they go into Chapter 11. That's where they belong. And they could reorganize."
Senators McCain and Shelby are completely right about the importance of a GM bankruptcy and in case you don't believe them, other experts have spoken out about a GM bankruptcy, explaining why the company's self-serving fear-mongering is wrong.
Harvard Law School bankruptcy expert Mark J. Roe recently said that a bankruptcy would be best for suppliers, New York University professor Edward Altman also said that a GM bankruptcy would allow the company and the government to stop throwing good money after bad. Hedge fund manager William Ackman told Charlie Rose that bailing out the company without a bankruptcy filing amounts to a handout to the company's creditors.
Hopefully President Obama is listening to the experts, and not just the company's executives and union bosses.

In retrospect, I'm sure that history will show that a substantial amount of the "bailout" monies will have been "invested unwisely" in a lot of businesses that should have been forced to either go out of business or through Chapter 11 reorganizations.
Now that everyone is "gaming" the "bailout" system, the aid to failing companies is being detrimental to those companies who have been run well and are healthy. The 'bailout" monies are making things worse in many respects, it is undermining the good companies.
There is a fine line between what was necessary and prudent versus the ill advised waste by the government.
If the government (Sic. Congress) had set up the reasonable and prudent regulations for the FIs and the corporations, as was Congress' fiduciary responsibility, then NONE of this economic debacle would have occurred.
So, the cause and the protracted problems of this economic debacle ARE the responsibility of Congress, and a result of the INEPTITUDE, INCOMPETENCE, and CORRUPTION of the vast majority of Congressmen . . . it took "majority votes" of Congress for all of this to occur, or not to occur (sic. lack of regulation).

It's just plain stupid to give GM any more taxpayers money no way will they recover anyway, they're gona go bankrupt anyway. There's no way they can recover it's too late now for GM.GM file then you can come back strong and leaner and thrive otherwise it's futile sad to say and save all the extra taxpayers money. I think also some banks should file too thats also a disaster to give them any more either when they're going to fail ANYWAY , Duh!!

Trouble is, the courts are lax in getting rid of those who ascended to their level where they are incompetent (Peter Principle). I am a long-time GM supporter, having had/have many Chevys, Pontiacs and Buicks. But who made the decision to drop the Camaro/Firebird and "replace" with the SSR? Who decided to drop the Monte Carlo when Toyota and others were coming out with 2-door sport coupes? I worked for a trucking company that went bankrupt and eventually out of business, and those who knew anything were let go and the big cheeses stayed - they knew little and cost too much.

As the Circuit City situation shows, bankruptcy does not always work to the benefit of a store, its investors, nor the general public. If those hwo scream GM must go bankupt were to get their wish, they would soon find out what a true depression is. I would rather nationalize it[something I hate the concept of] than to see it undergo the bankruptcy procedure. After all, even the government could hardly manage it worse :). Then it could be denationalised after the economy recovers. But I really do not thinkit needs this as yet. And i would rather give GM the $ than the banks or AIG

if Washington wants to send GM something how about orders for cars and trucks? at least they would be receiving hard goods for the public funds and driving consumption in the industrial supply chain here in the USA.
another suggestion is to have GM build 'green solar and wind powered' mobile emergency homes for the next catastrophe victims to live in when theirs are flooded or blown away or burned in a forest fire.
sometimes it seems that all anyone in Washington sees in the economy are tax payers and the budget to spend it, nothing to do with how anything is made or created between the two coasts.
and if the auto companies can be forced into bankrupcy, why not the banks? who says they are any different?
elected or not, representatives who support the cheats and screwups in the financial areana are themselves in danger of not being re-elected in the next go around. the total lack of a plan and a consistent plan to deal with similar problems is so apparent.

Why isn't the same being said to AIG? When is enough enough? No evaluation done, just hand out another 20 billion to the 165 billion they've already been given and burned through in less than 6 months. Anyone see a problem here...

Don't blame me. I voted for the hero not the zero. McCain is right. Let GM go bankrupt. No more taxpayer dollars. GM can't sell Hummer? To bad. GM just bought the name anyway, not the company. So GM go bankrupt. The military version will still be made for our troops though. AMG still manufactures them. So don't worry about our brave troops without a Hummer taking them around. GM does not have a car yet to beat the Honda Civic. The Cobalt is nice but not crisp like the Honda Civic. The Volt will not sell in the numbers needed to pay the taxpayers back A price tag of $40,000 is too steep for the large majority of consumers to afford. The Camaro is cool, and at $22,000, is not bad in price, but will not sell in the numbers either to help GM pay the taxpayer back and become viable again. GM has the moniker of being a car company that sells to old fogies and babyboomers. Sure GM has the Corvette, but that is not appealing to the now generation. GM just is not in touch with consumer demand. Only the celebrities, sports stars, and drug thugs can afford an Escalade. Not enough of them will be sold to help GM. The S-10 use to be a dope truck to customize. The Colorado and its twin are ugly and not conducive to customizing. GM missed the ball on this one too. GM is just in a mess and I have given up on them. As they say in Missouri. 'Show me' that you are real, or get on down the road.

Mccain you are truely being an obstructionist. To me anyone thats wants Obama to fail is a traitor. Now by telling GM to go bankrupt your even a bigger idiot than I imagined. I am not impressed by your little girl scout fits either and most of America is with me. Do America a favor and step down and just go away you have all the money you need so just go. GM is the very life blood of America and if you don't know that by now you are seriously out of touch. GM will be back stronger than ever and will be when you are long gone.
