Sometimes a seemingly small issue is transformed into a much larger problem. This is what happened between the U.S. and Mexico. The U.S. had a "pilot program" allowing Mexican trucks to cross the U.S. border and use U.S. roads. The program was halted last week on the grounds that the Mexican trucks were unsafe.
Mexico retaliated and said they would raise tariffs on $2.4 billion worth of U.S. exports. Mexico's tariffs would be increased on 90 industrial and agricultural products. These tariffs are set to be imposed later this week.
U.S. exports to Mexico totaled $151.5 billion dollars last year. Mexico's economy minister, Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said: "We believe that the action taken by the U.S. is wrong, protectionist and in clear violation of Nafta." The White House said it would create a new program to address the "legitimate concerns of Congress" while meeting Nafta commitments. The "pilot program" has been opposed by some members of Congress and the Teamsters Union. The US Department of Transportation studied the Mexican trucks and found them to be safe, in some cases safer than American trucks.
Do you believe that Mexican trucks should cross the U.S. border and use U.S. roads?

No. What's to stop those trucks from crisscrossing the nation while paying those drivers a fraction of what American truckers make?
Just wait until one of those Mexican truckers kills someone. The Mexican government will lobby to release them and probably get their way.
If you want to play devils advocate, let's have American truckers do the same thing in Mexico. Watch Mexicans and their politicians go ballistic.

This is a VERY good thing. If only the US government would stand up and say "Okay, No More NAFTA" start charging excessive tariffs on all the US Automaker products and Meade Telescopes manufactured in Mexico and being reimported to the US.
If this went far enough there is the possibility (slim as it may seem) that manufacturers would start building in the US again and create some jobs.
There are huge problems with the Mexico-USA border and we need to slam it shut completley for a few months whilst we get immigration and drug cartels under some control.

The "they take our jobs argument" doesn't stand up to logic.
But to me it seems logical that mexican trucks and drivers that spend over X minimum number of miles driving in america every month should have to licensed in america (and pay the same fees for tests, inspections, and licensing), and should have to pay taxes on the driver's labor and the portion of the operators profit done in America.
mexican truckers just going under 100 miles or whatever past the border to transfer their good to a distribution point and america certified truckers is one thing, but companies using mexican trucks all across america just because the started their journey in america...

This "pilot program" is just another attempt to shove globalism down our necks.
Believe me, if the few super rich at the top were not profiting, it would not even be an issue.
The only reason the Teemsters objected was because these were Mexican nationals who could not eventually be co-opted into the Teemsters. Unions seems to haveno problems with illegal aliens taking jobs because they are regarded as future union members.
So as the illegals are granted amnesty- something O would very much like to do, the employers will require a new crop of illegals to work for low wages. It's a great deal for them (employers) because they get the cheap labor and they get to hand the bill for education and health care to you, the tax payer. It's nothing less than another assault on the American middle class to benefit the wealthy. It's ingenious because it is couched in "compassion" for poor Mexicans and if you object, you are classified as "racist". Ingenious, just ingenious.

As far as I'm concerned, bring all our business back to the States and see how far they get with their tariffs.
We support enough of their illegals here. They have a lot of nerve. Maybe if we weren't paying for all of them, we could afford to keep our own businesses here.
Send their illegals out and bring our business back.

The so called "pilot program" is an item that "is" and "isn't". It was a safe move if one is considering a Mexican truck that was part of a major trucking company that maintained their equipment. On the other side, if it is an independent, who knows? Who is doing the checking? Please don't tell me that our Dept of Transportation is checking every truck. Plus, we also have the little matter of 100 miles or so into the U.S., drop cargo and return. Who is enforcing this? What if the driver goes 500 or 1,000? I am willing to bet that there is nobody watching, nor were we ever watching and someone just found out that the program was in fact creating much long incursions and was about to become a major embarrassment.
To the drivers themselves - have you ever seen a Mexican taxi, or for that matter the driving habits of the general public? If you have you can count on the fact that there are numerous truck drivers in the same category. Without some real strict enforcement of the pilot program provisions it was doomed before it began.
Retaliatory tariffs are very old with a long history of failure. We still have the Mckinley T&T which went into revision mode the year after it was passed. Worked so well that went into effect (1887?) and we had a depression in 1893, partly caused by a flood of cheap imports.

Besides all the racist comments here, I am Mexican and personally I think that our truck drivers are dangerous because they are not careful when driving. Some of them are not qualified to drive a truck and some of them carry drug hidden in the trucks. That may be true and certainly those drivers want the same privileges as a NORTH AMERICAN driver..that can´t be possible. But I can´t understand why so much hate against Mexican people.
KMC and all people here.. what´s going on with the attitudes? You feel that Mexicans are invading your territory, but what did you do when Mexico lost all of its territory when the US invaded it? Why these attitudes? why so much ignorance in the North Americans? Do you think that illegal people are invading your territory? So maybe all the tourists from the US who travel to Cancun and other touristic places should be expelled from our country too?
Personally I don´t think the decision of increasing the tariffs will benefit to Mexican people, but maybe Mexico is forced to do this in response to all the abuses your country is doing.
Racism is a form of ignorance and everyone who is racist is an ignorant in certain way.
I hope you understand Mexico´s position and this comment does not pretend to insult .Its simply a comment from a Mexican citizen who is sad and angry for what she thinks it is an abuse. As I can understand that you feel that your country is being invaded, I ask u to understand the immigrants position.
Thanks

Al Coholic just to remind you that all drug that comes from Mexico is consumed by the US. You are the first real consumers of Mexican Drugs..
In that case we should increase a tariff for each person in the US who buys Mexican drug :D

Jar1dk2 certainly Mexican drivers are not good mannered, but what can you tell me about the Spring Breakers who come to Cancun and what they only do is drinking beer, peeing in the beaches, scratching their huge stomaches and so on?
Its a shame you can´t see what happens inside your own society.

That is exactly what I (sarcastically) suggested, Nancyroj. That's how a tarrif works. If people want the merchandise they have to pay a premium for it which then goes to the government as a tax.
So the real question is, are the people who buy the drugs more guilty than the ones who provide them? Lets say, for instance that the US started exporting a product that hooked your people on it and ruined their lives and families. Would you blame your consumers?
