Dell launches product assult on HP, IBM

More

Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) is tired as hell, and isn't going to take it any more. Well, something like that. After having been battered in the consumer and retail PC market for well over a few years now, the commodity company has unleashed a whole slew of corporate server products and services aimed at taking on the services consulting leader, IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM) and the largest computer company in the world that has set its sights on IBM as well, Hewlett-Packard Corp. (NYSE: HPQ).

All in all, Dell has announced 14 new products aimed at taking some of the corporate server pie held by IBM and HP. The PowerEdge server products and EqualLogic storage products (from the 2007 acquisition) are being combined with a specific array of services are being packaged as complete engineering solutions to business computing needs. Instead of the piecemeal approach that was was Dell's forte for such a long time, the company's "all for one" approach is refreshing, if not late.

The newer offerings are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses that may not have a complete and staffed IT department. Images for each server (as in, operating systems) can be pre-configured by Dell before shipment to eliminate that need once the solution is delivered. In terms of the market share amount for these kinds of servers, Dell is in a distant third place at just under 10% to HP's 58%. In all reality, this is Dell's attempt to just keep up with the competition, not come close to matching them.
