The Associated Press reports that "Fritz Henderson said at a news conference Tuesday that his pay will remain unchanged now that he is head of the troubled automaker. His base salary as chief operating officer was cut 30 percent to about $1.3 million this year when GM accepted government loans."
Even Richard Wagoner was willing to take a $1 per year salary.
Henderson has been vice chairman and chief financial officer since January of 2006, and we all know what's transpired in the intervening three-plus year: record losses, shareholder value destruction and a government bailout.
At least at most of the banks, the failed executives took huge losses on their substantial stock holdings. Not so for Mr. Henderson: In his quarter-century career with the company, Mr. Henderson managed to accumulate just 22,268 shares of the company's stock according to the latest 10-K.
Employees, shareholders, and every single person who has ever paid taxes in the United states are being asked to make huge sacrifices for GM, and Mr. Henderson won't give up a a salary for a year.
That's not change we can believe in. It's more of the same arrogance and unwillingness to take responsibility that has made the vast majority of Americans hate the Detroit auto industry.

If the salary of the President of the USA is only a little over $400K, then how does Fritz henderson figure that he, or any other CEO, is worth more than that? Any type of "bonus" over and above the President's salary should be on a "merit basis" as to what he accomplishes.
Even then, I do not think that ANY CEO warrants a salary that is TWICE as much as the President of the USA. The audacity of these CEOs to hink that they, one single individual, warrants these types of salaries and "other compensations" is ridiculous and ludicrious.
The time has come to rid our corporations of these "Robber CEO 'Barons"" who are nothing more than "glorified management EMPLOYEES". If they don't want the management jobs at REASONABLE SALARIES, bonuses, and other compensations, then let them go find employment elsewhere . . . neither the corporations nor the American people need these "robber baron type guys; they are the root cause of the orchestration and perpetuations of the irresponsible FRAUDS that have ruined their corporations and our national economy.
If they don't like it, then let them resign; their positions can EASILY be filled by more competent and more ethical men. We've had our fill of these audacious, arrogant fraternity of "old school CEOS. The stock holders need to get rid of them and their "rubber stamp" Boards of Directors. They are all "damaged goods" anyway.

I believe Fritz doesn't think he's going to last long at GM so why not take the full salary is the way he's thinking. I believe he'll retire within the year....a gut feeling.

It would send a message that Fritz is serious about saving the taxpayer money. It would be more than symbolic for Fritz to take a dollar a year. It would take a little bit of pressure off those that are losing their jobs as a result of GM losing market share, and the fallout from this recession. The taxpayers are weary and antsy about keeping the executives as well as the UAW in the money at the expense of the taxpayer. The taxpayer is not into the politics of the UAW and GM. They want action and not a bunch of dragged out bickering. It is a good thing that Fritz is serious about looking into a bankruptcy though.

yeah, he earned it alright, cause without those government bailouts his company would be bankrupt. If these CEO's are such hardworking people doing such a great job they wouldnt be on the verge of bankruptcy.

I have no sympathy for any bigwig who is making big bucks. However, I do not think that the head of GM should work for free.
Do you work for free? Most likely not. Why should anyone be asked to work for free.
Stupidity in action.

I started w/GM in '84 and resigned in '05.
my retirement was (in '05) $100K. Now it is worth squat. I'm sure Wagoner feels just as bad as I do. LOL

People have to be paid for their work. Those AIG "bonuses" were deferred compensation for not getting paid for a year.
You can't except people to forgo their source of income and work for free. If the next CEO is not going to get paid, then why the hell would any qualified person would want that job?

Let Obama set the example! If he will work for $1 per year, perhaps others will follow!
Sure, Wagoner would have settled for that $1, for a year - and kept his job - then collected the big $$ again, after that year...
I sure wouldn't put up with the responsibility of that position while forced to kiss a**, like those in our government expect them to do, without a large salary!

Good for Fritz. Tell Barrak Hitler Obama to go to hell. Can't anyone see that B Hitler Obama wants to be leader of the world. Where in the constitution does it say that "Hitler" can fire CEO's of any company. Or even how much they can be paid. It's all between the company and the employee. Come on people wake up. Keep letting this "Hitler" do as he wants and you'll all be working for the state. And you'll sorry that this nman was ever in office. We need more Fritz's. We don't need any Hitler's. Wake up before it's too late.

Henderson sounds out of his depth. I think Obama is generally doing the right thing, but I think he messed up getting rid of Wagonner. The US needs GM more then AIG and some of the big banks. I hope I'm wrong about Henderson.

Its wrong to ask someone to work for a dollar a year. Why doesnt Congress work for a dollar a year since they are largely responsible for the mess we are in.No one intentionally does a bad job and if they are doing such a bad job to warrant such a low pay they should be fired. If it werent for our governments ability to print money this country would have filed for bankruptcy years ago.

No one should work for free, HOWEVER, when the government comes to the rescue, this arrogant GM buttplug needs to set an example. Thank GOD Waggoner is gone. He was just another example of corporate excess. (his WIFE had a corporate jet??? WTF???) Now, don't get me wrong, when a company does well, of course the CEO on down deserves bonuses and perks. When sales fall 50% in a year, it's time to clean house. Why don't they hire someone from Honda or Toyota? They evidently know what time it is. Those companies dole out bonuses to workers who DERSERVE it. Congratulations! you lost 50 billion this year. Here's a $22 million dollar bonus! B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T !!!!

M Bernard: What kind of dick are you with the 'hitler' remarks? Dubya should return his pay for being the shittiest president in history. Why should "hitler" (in your vein of assholishness) Obama work for free after stepping into Bush's non-existent shoes? You must be running a bankrupt comapny and being overcompensated.

Perhaps we should control Jocks, and Movie stars to salary's below 400K also!
The Elected Officials are supposed to be there to Serve the People and they are not there to make $$$ Ha Ha. They all back scratch so much they have no finger nails left. All or any can leave office and command millions for just being a smuck. They are set for life as far as retirement and medical care after one election. CEO's should be so lucky as that if they are fired, they are still set up for life and never will be completely broke, can write a book (ha ha as if they write it) about nothing and collect millions. Stop feeling sorry for the low pay....it is only a perk!

Henderson is making a he** of a lot less then Wagoner. Its the board of directors who make the final decision, as to how much the corporate CEO's get paid.
1.3 Million a year should be enough for Fritz to feed his family. With out resulting in Mrs.Henderson, resorting to serve mac & cheese & Thunderbird Wine, at their next dinner party.
