President Obama has ordered the United States government to speed up its stimulus-inspired plan to purchase 17,600 new American-made cars by June 1st. The purchases are designed "to increase demand for American auto companies during these difficult economic times," according to the White House. It's actually unbelievable: The United States government lends an enormous sum of money to General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler but insists that they meet certain targets to demonstrate viability. Then the government buys a bunch of cars to help them meet those targets: Can someone please tell me what exactly Bernie Madoff did that was so bad?
This is such a ripoff to the vast majority of US taxpayers who don't care what happens to GM and Chrysler. It amounts to a handout to GM's shareholders and creditors who should have been wiped out long before Uncle Sam got involved.
And why are we buying these cars? Because the government desperately needs new cars? No. Because American-made cars represent the best value? No: If they did, there would be no need for a bailout. No, the United States government is buying cars from GM and Chrysler to help bail out companies that have already received billions of dollar in bailouts and will likely receive many more billions before this is all over.
This is an absolute travesty, and every single American should send hate mail to their Congressman.

When you buy an American car the profits stay in America. Even if you buy a Jap car made here the profits go to Japan. See if you still like the Japs so much when one of them is doing YOUR job.

I disagree with the ones that are for US THE PEOPLE, buying the cars, now what? is obama going to send each on of his crooks, and sent the rest to Kenya and the one he bowed to? He should have bought them before taking his trip, then he could have given more that a ipod and DVD"S.
The companys still have the bailout money, didn't you read, the reporter said they would be back for more bailouts.
If the money had been given to the people, the people would in turn, buy, that would have brought the economy up, and we wouldn't owe out our azz for years and years, for something stupid, who can buy one of the cars from the Goverment, it they can buy from the auto companys.
I am going to take my money out of the bank, quit my job and screw Odumbass.
I sure wish we had a President.

Actually, without GM, both Ford and Chrysler would fail, then, Toyota, Nissan and Honda would inevitably fail since most car parts are purchased from and/or through GM. Many of the smaller part manufacturers would go belly up. Oh, and if you think GM doesn't offer reliability or affordability...go ahead and look at their starting MSRP and that of the foreign competitors, then just look at one more simple FACT. Buick just became the MOST RELIABLE vehicle. Lexus no longer holds that highly esteemed honor...it is a GM made car. Thank you very much. I own GM, always have, and always will.

The issue isn't whether the American taxpayer should buy American cars, it's why are we buying cars we don't need just to put money in exec's pockets. Seems to me that Obama should have just written GM exec's a check, just like he did for AIG.

A global economy means our pay scale will drop to the level of the low paying foreign countries.Let's do things the way they were done in the past. Make the parts here. Assemble the products here. This means more good paying American jobs which means more money to spend which means even more jobs. PROBLEM SOLVED.

Yeah everyone seems to have missed the point, the US government has ALWAYS purchased Amercan cars, and tanks and airplanes, the military and government is and has been buying American made products. Now the complaint is why only buy GM and it seems like they are replacing vehicles too early, not that they are buying American. Anyway Obama and the rest of The Democratic party owes their soles to the unions, so the UAW is getting paid back

Our Goverment has always bough American, as a Veteran Military Police Officer, alot of people don't realize that the military is one sector requiring new Auto's. MP's do civilian patrol, high speed chases, and ..well Fords don't hold up in a pursuit, I loathed Fords, roof lights malfunctioned, and Chrysler, well lets just says you look odd pursuing a speeder with a K- Car with half your roof light not working and unable to go over 55 MPH! So for many years the Goverment has almost always bought GM. :)

Keith Cantone stated that an union auto worker makes $72.00 per hour. Again as many people are sceaming about putting facts into their blogs, a union auto worker makes $28.00 per hour. I know I am one. If you add the monies that the Big Three pays for benefits (Health Care, Retirees Income and Health Care costs) that is where the $72.00 per hour figure comes into light. The import manufacturers do not have the number of retirees the Big Three have. The import manufacturers also recieve monies from our own state governments as well as monies from their own governments to operate. If you check your history you will find that a lot of those retirees fought to raise the safe working standards, child labor laws, paid vacation time and health care we recieve today. If you cut the union auto worker's wages, what will stop the import manufacturers from lowering their workers wages, Big Three from sending jobs over seas and the CEOs still recieving their large pays?
We all need to come together and protect our own backyard. Everybody in the world is trying to take our own yard away from us.

I would like to see Laws that require 100% of all Military Contracts to be placed with American Manufacturers. With one disclaimer: Any company that "Outsources" work to foreign companies or American Companies in Foreign countries are BARRED from participating in any Military Contracting.
I want America to go Vertical again! We have the greatist workers in the World: It is our incompetent CEO's with MBA's that have destroyed American Manufacturing.
All Bailout money stays in America.
All vehicles purchased by our Government at any level must be made in America on American soil by American workers. Th purchase a bunch of Gm Products made in China would really tick me off. I would consider that TREASON of the first degree and ask for the firing squad.

Companies and Nissan and Honda and Toyota have more of the parts of their vehicles made in America than the majority of cars that roll off the assembly lines of "American" car companies.
As such, I do not buy into the whole "buy American" sentiment.
No one forced the big 3 to over-expand. No one forced them to create hundreds of different brands that are essentially the same thing.
It is also patently un-American to continue bailing out a failing or poorly established business enterprise, especially when it puts hundreds of millions of tax-payers over a period of many many years on the line for the bailout.

NO.NO.NO.NO.NO. No to all of the Idiocy represented by the majority of responses here. (By the way, many of you need to learn how to spell as well.) GM and Chrysler (and all private/public) companies are just that. Companies. Not Government entities. This corporate welfare program is unfair, unreasonable, and unconstitutional. There's a word everyone seems to be conveniently avoiding here. Where is the constitutional provision, plan, hope, instruction, or inference that presents this unlawful taxation on the american citizens? And don't bring up the "too big to fail" lie. That is all that it amounts to. We have allowed the bullies on the playground to take our balls away. Plain and simple. Wimps.

There is no loyalty these days, Americans and Canadians should always be buying American vehicles.
There is this false sense of security where people think they need to purchase a toyota or honda. I have had both and they were crap.
American cars are far better looking are very reliable, there is no reason why anyone should feel they need to buy a shitless import.
Let's get it together and save these jobs people !
