President Obama has ordered the United States government to speed up its stimulus-inspired plan to purchase 17,600 new American-made cars by June 1st. The purchases are designed "to increase demand for American auto companies during these difficult economic times," according to the White House. It's actually unbelievable: The United States government lends an enormous sum of money to General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler but insists that they meet certain targets to demonstrate viability. Then the government buys a bunch of cars to help them meet those targets: Can someone please tell me what exactly Bernie Madoff did that was so bad?
This is such a ripoff to the vast majority of US taxpayers who don't care what happens to GM and Chrysler. It amounts to a handout to GM's shareholders and creditors who should have been wiped out long before Uncle Sam got involved.
And why are we buying these cars? Because the government desperately needs new cars? No. Because American-made cars represent the best value? No: If they did, there would be no need for a bailout. No, the United States government is buying cars from GM and Chrysler to help bail out companies that have already received billions of dollar in bailouts and will likely receive many more billions before this is all over.
This is an absolute travesty, and every single American should send hate mail to their Congressman.

You really dont think the Japanese government would buy American cars for government use do you ???? Even if Japanses cars were totally inferior to american cars they still would not buy american cars over their own. What an idiot you are. By the way, American cars still outsell Japanese cars so your idea that the big three dont make cars that people want is false.......

The government buys or leases cars every year for all the many government agencies. They should "spread the wealth" around and buy from GM, Ford and Chrysler.

That's two bad ideas in one week by our new President: (1) directing that the gov't buy GM autos; maybe the old ones would last another year ? (2) Having the corrupt ACORN organization take part in the 2010 census. Both moves need to rescinded for the good of the country.

Who is the idiot who wrote this column?
The vast majority of taxpayers don't care about what happens to GM or Chrysler? Really? So whats the line of reasoning behind that airheaded statement? That everybody who previously owned one of those company's cars will just go out and buy a Honda or Toyota to compensate? That if one or both of those corporate giants ( who by the way literally helped create middle-class America!) bite the dust, every displaced auto worker will move to Tennesse or Alabama to work for Hyundai, Honda, Toyota or Mercedes? That somehow all will be okay even though both of those companies and their related suppliers employ around 3/4 of a million folks? Really?
I never thought I would see the day when middle class America would have so thorough a war waged against it. Bumbling financial institutions can fly on privately owned Learjets into Washington, put on a minor song-and-dance routine and receive $800 BILLION dollars in taxpayer-funded aid with virtually no oversight. Two of the Big Three ask for less than a tenth of what their Wall St. distant cousins did and have to jump thru rings of fire wearing gasoline drawers and holding a cup of nitroglycerin. Amazing.
I care about what happens to GM & Chrysler. Because of this extreme slowdown in the industry and the economy, I was laid off two wednesdays ago from my job at a steel processing plant. THATS why the majority of taxpayers care about the future of these valuable players in the auto industry. Because it has or will hit close to home.

Bloggers are not journalists, they are just a$$holes with opinions just like the rest of us. Check some facts. Most Japanese nameplate cars are built in North America by American workers in Right to Work for Less states. Legacy costs are about 8% of a vehicles cost whereas ADVERITSING is about 60%. Engineering and R&D is 1%. Where is bailout money going? Marketing, because the sheep that are American consumers will buy anything that's promoted on tv or online. The gov't purchases products by low bid. Who's going to bid lower than a company who is owned by the Gov't. Low bid is why the flags that fly from federal buildings are made in China? Think about it when you drive your GM or Chrysler to Walmart to buy all the foreign made shit that yopu have in your house.

I have a 2005 Pontiac with over 107,000 miles on it. Only problems was a corroded wire connector for the abs, brakes still worked, just not the abs. Pontiac fixed without blinking their eye. Only other problem was a bad body molding, also fixed without any hassle at all. Know people with VW's that have constantly been in and out of the shop with half the miles of my car. Toyota owners with the same and much more hassles from the dealership. I don't know how Ford stays in business with the way their dealerships opperate. Chrysler either just for the poor product they frequently put out. Not to mention ugly. So I think GM is a good buy, just wish they hadn't made the new Pontiacs so boring to look at.
Anyway, at least with the government buying cars they aren't just giving them free cash like the banks. Having been in the Air Force, chances are they could use a few new vehicles.
Oh and did I mention I have a 1994 GMC 2500 with the 6.5 turbo diesel with nearly 270,000 miles on it that runs great as well? I think GM's biggest problem is making damn good quality vehicles, so you don't have to get a new car ever 3 years.

At last, a President who encourages us to buy Ameican made products. At one time *Quality* was a considered a value that our country. Because of the over run of poor quality goods which have flooded our goods from other countries, we have forgotten what craftsmanship and exacting workmanship entails. It's high time we begin to work on manufacturing quality goods again again. We will start feeling better about ourselves if we regain just this one value.

Either the author owns Ford stock or is advocating the purchase of Hyundai, Honda, Kia, etc. It would appear (since there are no facts in evidence) that the government is authorizing the agencies to purchase budgeted vehicles scheduled for acquisition by June a little earlier. Government agencies purchased budgeted vehicles two months early from a USA company that could use the business now. I can't figure the reason for the writer's outrage.

Of course the government should buy American cars..In fact Americans should start to realize that if GM,Ford, Chrysler go under, so many people will be laid off and be without benefits.
American Cars are good now, Foreign hype is all made up by Advertisers.
