According to his bio, Jim Breyer is "passionate about contemporary art, film, wine, travel, education and environmental initiatives, and music ranging from Bach to Nirvana." Now he has a new passion: Dell (NASDAQ: DELL). That is, Breyer has agreed to join its board of directors.Breyer, who is a partner at Accel Partners, is one of the top venture capitalists. Some of his investments include game-changing companies like Macromedia, Facebook and RealNetworks (NASDAQ: RNWK).
In fact, Breyer is also on the boards of Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT), Marvel Entertainment (NYSE: MVL), BBN, Brightcove, Etsy, Global Grind, ModelN, Prosper and yes, Facebook. No doubt, he's a busy guy, huh?
Then again, his breadth of experience should be a big value-add for Dell. After all, the company is in the midst of a major restructuring – as it deals with fierce competitors. Thus, to get an edge, Dell will need to be more entrepreneurial. To this end, the company must have its hand on the pulse of emerging technologies.
And Breyer should be spot-on for the role.
