Travel-industry experts hypothesize that employees may be opting out of summertime travel this year, out of concern that their jobs will be deemed unnecessary or easily replaced while they are out of the office. What's worse? Coming back from a week in the mountains to find a mountain of work, or a boss newly cognizant of the fact that you're not as indispensable as everyone thought! Nervous workers appear to be fearing the latter, and whether or not this is driven by paranoia and panic, the travel market is suffering.
"People are scared of losing their jobs and want to stay in touch with their work," one travel expert told The Washington Times. Another noted that ". . . people feel guilty about indulging themselves and are nervous to leave their office for too long." And one New York-based advertising firm's survey showed that just over half of parents asked said they planned to cut down on vacation spending.
And with decreasing demand comes improved supply, so people who have the travel bug can get great deals now; some cruise lines are offering cash credits, and certain hotels are providing a fifth night free with a four-night stay. And don't forget that gasoline prices are lower than year-ago levels, making flying and driving a bit easier on the wallet.

WOW! You don't take a vacation because you might not have a job when you get back,,,,,,,,,,how sad is that. But I guess we all live is soom sort of fear of some kind but something like that, no thank you I'll just move on and do something else it's not worth it. Just remember that all of us will some day be on the other side of the dirt and to all the living dead have a great day.

America is the most overworked, least paid, and gets less vacation time of any of the "developed" countries
For example: Holland gets 4 weeks PAID vacation time each year. And if you work more than 38 hrs per week, you get more time as compensation.
Their(EURO) life is more about "quality" and ours(USA) is more about "quanity".
So let's let our bosses have more control over our lives, bully us and work til we drop!

You Go Steve
I did just that and was in the first wave of layoffs. The company went bankrupt and restructured with a 20% cut in pay . Benifits and wages were cut also . I was not asked to return as I took vacation sick days and was not a yes man . I was a good employee and a fair manager . I could see it coming for months .
If we don't take vacations the Companies will eventually take them away . Work to Live not Live to work. No big deal

I don't know about anyone else but when my husband goes on vacation, he's never really completely out of touch.. The cell phone makes him available anywhere in the US and the computer works in US and abroad..I laugh at him and tell him if he answers the phone and emails its not really a vacation day and he shouldn't be charged with one if he's working on vacation, even if its for an hour!!!

I am truly understanding this article, for I got laid off while I was on vacation, so I know how everyone is feeling. Just everybody try to keep their head up, I know it's a lot of panic going around because people are so afraid they will lose their jobs. Right now, I'm still looking for a job, it's been almost 6 months now and it starting to seem like my resume is floating in a sea of resumes. Ohio got hit really hard with unemployment, and when you apply for a job, 5,000 to 6,000 people are applying to. I just wonder does the 23 years of work experience really means anything anymore, or is my age playing a factor too.

Divide and conquer; who else is working but butt kissers who let their rights be violated? They can't afford to use their vacation days or stand up for themselves because they bought into the free cow conspiracy...giving sex away for free to men and having to support themselves for life, as if this won't be an issue as they age...they have NOTHING...and will never be able to afford to not work. They are one reason for your lowered pay, lack of job, reduced benefits and more hours for free as well as safety violations. Free sex gave Mr. Potter of It's a Wonderful Life the bank........it's as simple as that. Men can afford to wait for marriage since sex is free and see who will offer what financially without their assistance; women are desperate and don't care if they're married for their paycheck and are expected to pay half the main bills, they increased the cost of housing doing this so they could BENEFIT more from their marriage, why do you need it when sex is free if not for money? And now they're all screaming poverty....WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN?

I worked for Citibank until I was laid off with my entire division. It didn't matter that we were profitable, covered our salaries by March of each year through commission generated, and were available to other lines of business at no cost to them to help them generate income. Working there was making people ill and there were plenty of people I know who were terrified of taking time off. After I was cut, sure I was depressed and pissed off, but then I had an epiphany. I could continue to do the same thing as I had done, just on my own as a consultant, working the hours I want to work, and I have no paranoid senior manager looking over my shoulder every minute waiting for me to complete another meaningless report.

Down sizing, layoffs, out sourcing that is how to make American business lean and competitive. Now, where did all those customers go?

A company will always get rid of you unless you accept wage cuts and agree to longer hours, weekend work, and blind obedience......or if you make yourself indespensable.
I was the only technician out of several engineers sent to Fanuc Robotics school in Michigan. The school taught us nothing about actually teaching our robots how to paint, but upon my return, I shut one robot down when production was light and practiced teaching it out of the book. I did this steadily for several months and became quite proficient at it. Then, the only engineer capable of the teaching quit and that left only me to depend on. You'ld be surprised at the change of attitude by the company, both in raises and perks!

vacation, what's that? Haven't taken one in 8 years. Vacations were for when I worked my first job for 40 years and got virtually nothing but doing work I loved. Now I just work, in fact looking for a couple 8 hour days for something to do my weekends off. Not cause I wanna, wifey and I combined now make less than half what I alone used too. Don't need unions my ass.

America is also the most in-debt people because we want what we want, when we want it whether we have the $ or not. That being said, we aren't taking vacation this year. We are thankful to be working and will just be working and working and paying our bills. No vacation here. Shoot- what's vacation?

I really think this is not a DEMS -REP thing . I think it's a power play from Most Politicians and Big Buisness. Company's have cut the payroll that their is virtually no one left to take a vacationing employees place . People in management are so afraid because they can and will be replaced for little or no reason . Employees are of no value to thease stressed managers unless they are killing themselves with work making the managers look good . I am not in a union but in this day and time I would rather be in a union . Now before you attack me let me tell you most Big city Fire and Police departments are union. City , US Government and State workers have some kind of reprensentation or rules that govern them. Thease people do not know what is ment by being afraid of taking vacation . I think all the American workforce wants is a fair shake.

Guess what- I took ALL of my vacation time, I am salaried, and I took sick leave as well to have a knee replaced-NO FEAR. You have to be an ESSENTIAL employee to do this. When I retired, they actually asked me if I could fill in for vacations :) I told them, yes, but on a per diem.
