Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) started making an impact on eco-sustainability over a year ago by announcing how green the PC retailer would become. Low and behold, it recently showed up in first place at the first ranking of the Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) Benchmark Report. Dell was rated along with a slew of other companies from the computer hardware, software, professional services, and network and telecommunications sectors. In other words, a pretty large field.
Dell bested companies ranging from International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) to Hewlett-Packard Corporation (NYSE: HPQ). Will any of this help Dell compete more heavily against rival HP? Not at all -- but the cost savings must be substantial for Dell to have made such a large investment in green policies across the company.
Now, if the PC retailer can trade in some of that green ammunition into marketing muscle for its business and consumer PCs, it could capitalize on those green efforts in terms of product differentiation that actually makes a difference, as opposed to mindless marketing blurbs. The company's banning of non-working product exports to developing countries is great -- but marketing this and other green efforts should be at the top of its list now more than ever.
