Cramer on BloggingStocks: Travelers is a fitting pick

TheStreet.com's Jim Cramer says that it's the most conservative player in an industry filled with gunslingers.

The keepers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average must have felt insurance-less after the defrocking of AIG (NYSE: AIG) (Cramer's Take), so it's fitting that they added Travelers (NYSE: TRV) (Cramer's Take) to the list, even as I would have preferred Ford (NYSE: F) (Cramer's Take) or Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) (Cramer's Take).

They needed a financial that wasn't a bank and there aren't many out there that still trade at anything but desperate levels or weren't saved by the government.

That's why Travelers is such a fitting pick. It is the exact opposite of Citigroup (NYSE: C) (Cramer's Take), which is coming out of the Dow, even as Travelers was once a part of the Citigroup family. It is the most conservative player in the insurance industry, which, amazingly, turned out to be filled with gunslingers.

I had high hopes that the government would force one of the ne'er-do-well insurers that bet the farm on unhedged annuities to sell solvent businesses to other "good" insurers of which there were only Chubb (NYSE: CB) (Cramer's Take) and Travelers, but the government's in total forbearance mode for everyone so no such luck for TRV.

The guy who runs Travelers, Jay Fishman, may be the finest bond investor in America, as he didn't blow his firm's head off with any junk, didn't reach for yield, never trusted the "AAA"-rated worthless mortgage collections and kept his company from doing foolish things that it could never recover from.

In short, his company is the polar opposite of insurer AIG and Citigroup.

Smart choice.

I wish Travelers were more representative of the insurance industry because if it were, we would never have gotten into this jam. Instead it turned out to be about the only good one in the bunch!
